View Full Version : LS3 oilpan relief valve

What it looks like GM have done is standardize the V8 oilpan assembly across an entire car platform. So although only the AFM engines (L76, L77,L99) require an AFM oil pressure relief valve to protect AFM valley plate solenoids....they've included the valve into the oilpans used on LS3 also.
Remembering that every oilpump already includes a relief valve to guard against overpressure & every oil filter already includes a primitive bypass device which activates if there is a blockage.....then do you really need another oil pressure relief valve?

Considerations:
a) Engines before AFM variants came along never had these additional relief valves in the oilpan.
b) The AFM relief valve has no AFM components it needs to protect in non-AFM engines (LS3, AFM hardware deleted L76)
c) Should the AFM relief valve pick up a little debri on it's seat, or be stuck partially open during service then oilflow which you require at the top of your engine will be bypassing directly back into the oilpan.
d) If you have your oilpan off for any reason then have a look at the AFM relief valve and at least consider it's usefullness if you have no AFM components in your engine.

Details below with additional info.

Originally the GM AFM relief valve was Part Number 12594579, this was superceded in June 2006 by the new current Part Number 12608835.
The valve has a diameter of 19mm and has a hexagonal 17mm AF section at the top.
Underhead length is 14mm with only 11.5mm of it being threaded, the lower 2.5mm has no thread.
The thread is M14 x 1.50mm

A suitable plug IMO would be the Dorman Auto Grade Oil-Tite Drain Plug Part No 65386.
This plug comes with a copper crush washer to seal the thread.
65386 thread is M14 x 1.50
Hex head is 19mm AF
Underhead length is 12.3mm (you lose about 1.5mm of thread engagement due to the thickness of the copper crush washer, so the 65386 will still utilise the approx 11 mm depth of thread as the original valve).

CP,
Thanks for this info. This is perfect timing for me since I'm getting the car re-modded and want to get rid of that relief valve once and for all.

Cool.
Report back if you decide to use Dorman 65386, I only selected it from published specs and haven't actually seen one.

Good info. The relief also, when lifting, tends to spray oil on a single piston assembly and can contribute to oil usage issues.

So does the GXP with the LS3 also have this relief value and is it a good practice to remove this ? Anyone have pictures of this relief valve in a GXP LS3 pan ?

Are you talking about Greg from Pace or me from Australia?
Just reply in this thread and mention the type of parts you are chasing and either one of us will guide you thru.

I couldn't find that Dorman part number locally, but I did find a plug with the same length and thread dimensions and a flanged head at Autozone. Had to buy a copper washer separately, since this plug came with a steel one. Here it is installed in my crate LS3's oil pan along with the Improved Racing baffle I bought.
