I've read someplace that there was a very minor difference between the GT leather wheel and the GXP wheel. Anyone know what it is? If there is a difference, will the GXP wheel fit the GT without modification? How about the top silver trim piece? Same on both?

Everything will exchange. The difference between the gt and gxp is the gxp is thicker and more pronounced on the 3 and 9 positions, also the bottom is flat.

If you have the GT sport package steering wheel, I wouldn't worry about the GXP one as it isn't that much drastic of a change. If you have the base GT leather steering wheel, it makes a great improvement, at least for me it did.

Thanks Zodiac. I already have a GT leather wheel but I just bought a red/onyx wheel from a GXP to go with a set of red/onyx seats I just installed. I was hoping to hear that all the silver trim and control buttons are identical, which from your post sounds as if they are.

Yep, I did the same thing, got the Red/Black to go with my interior. Congrats on a great purchase, it will definitely make you think why they didn't come like that stock.

Yep, the controls and trim swap right over.

Thanks everyone. Len, great photo comparison. The GXP wheel is noticably beefier. Can't wait to get it on

Not to thread jack, but I have a gt and have always thought it looks nothing like the wheel on the left. Yet it doesn't have the pronounced flat bottom of the gxp on the right...

Yeah the feel is a night and day difference. Definitely one of my favorite mods, especially since it's something you notice every time you drive it. In case you haven't seen them, there are instructions in this thread: Steering Wheel Instructions (http://forum.grrrr8.net/showthread.php?t=1771) that will help when it comes time to install your wheel.

Do you have the sport package? Mine's just the premium package with the non-sport leather wheel.

Yes I do have the sport pack.

LDM

That would be the difference. Sport package got a better steering wheel than just the premium package did.

Good, so three wheels were offered, and the HSV wheel is different than the gxp too...

Remember, HSV is HSV not Holden. There were 3 wheels. Base model, Sport and GXP. Also, some came with red trim.

There are 5 different part numbers that came on G8s.

92194397 Base (vinyl)
92194398 Leather-wrapped (in my picture above)
92194401 Sport
92217700 Onyx GXP
92217699 Red/Onyx GXP.

There are also some Holden/HSV options.

For the record, I got my current wheel from CP (Holden VE Sports Steering Wheel) and although it appears the same as the red/onyx GXP wheel, the texture is slightly different (shape still seems to be identical).

On the GXP wheel (top picture) the leather at 3 and 9 o'clock is perforated, while on my wheel (bottom picture) it is slightly dimpled. Can't say that one is better than the other, but I got mine for a lot cheaper than GXP wheels were going for at the time.

Here's pictures of all five variants.

Onyx GXP

Red/Onyx GXP

You can see that the sport wheel is more similar to the Onyx GXP wheel shape than the regular leather GT wheel is, but still not the same.

VE HSV onyx.
On par with the comfort and features of GXP onyx but about $50 cheaper (incl shipping) than the GXP wheel.

Paul, I think you made the same mistake I originally did and copied the same part number for the base (N46) and leather-wrapped (NP5) wheels. I didn't notice it until you mentioned a correction to a part number, but you posted the same as what I originally had. I edited my post above.

Thanks Len. You're correct....I saw it & meant to fix it.
All fixed now.
