View Full Version : Tapping Noise - 2009 G8 GT (Video)

I got home the other night and heard this before I shut the car off. I haven't had a chance to look into it yet, but I grabbed a video. The noise is barely heard in the engine compartment, but pretty loud from underneath the car.

This video was taken with the camera underneath the car, on the driver side, behind the front tire. Any thoughts?

Just an update, I went out to see how it sounded if you raised the RPM a little. I wasn't able to hear the noise at all once the RPM came up a little. Also, after a minute the noise went away at idle too. I first noticed it after a drive though, so it's not just a cold engine noise.

I know the DOD lifters are known for having issues.

The noise is very obvious and haven't heard it before on either of mine.

I recommend taking the vehicle into the dealership to see if they have heard this concern before or can diagnosis it. I would also take the video in with you just in case they are unable to duplicate the problem.

Please let me know if you have any other questions, comments or concerns.

Thank you,

Tina

I showed the video to a coupe friends who work at a Cadillac dealership and their guess is cam/lifter noise.

I appreciate the advice, but I'll check into it on my own. I don't want a dealer messing around with it with my mods on there. I'll definitely keep the thread updated as to what I find.

Yes it's definately a lifter.
Throughout your clip you can hear it stuggling to come good and it often misses a beat of its chirping.
When you raise the RPM a little it's getting more oil pressure and that's disguising the problem, you can go from your current chirp to a full metallic clacking noise at any rpm, within 50 miles of careful driving.
It may not necessarily be an AFM lifter that's gone bad, it could be any one of the 16.
Next step will possibly be a MIL and a misfire code thrown on a certain cylinder.

That's actually exactly what I was hoping to hear. I've been looking for an excuse to cam it :brock:

On a side note, when I first had it tuned I had it shifting at 6300, but had it put back to 6000 in hopes of helping the lifters live longer. So much for that, lol.

I've heard that sound before. When you get it a part, take a good look at the oil pump. If you see circular scratches you can bet that metal is making it's way through the engine.

I stopped driving it as soon as I heard the noise, so hopefully that helped. Are most people with lifter issues needing rebuilds too, or just repairing/upgrading the valvetrain?

It depends on how far you take the lifter issue.

My car made that same noise but went away and I havent heard it since. Does that mean Im still good?

That does not sound good in my newbie, under experienced opinion. I get start up tick occasionally that worries me but this would scare the crap out of me. Get that thing into a shop asap.

In my experience, if the noise presents itself then mysteriously disappears that isn't a good sign.

If you can get the dealer to warranty this after you mods I would try to go that route. There are TSBs out there for this so hopefully they'll realize it's not due to your mods.

I'm gonna use this as an opportunity to delete the DOD and install a cam, rather than try to sneak it in under warrantee. I'll get it apart before I order anything, just to verify.

Sounds like a good plan.

I only heard it for about 5 minutes. After that it went away. The motor seems to be running smooth. Should I worry? How much time do I have?

Well I popped it apart today and don't see any pitting on the cam or any of the lifter rollers. I do have a line on the rollers of about 4-5 of the lifters, but the lines aren't deep. They are more on the regular lifters than the DOD lifters.

I apologize for the pictures being sideways. Apparently it's that time of the month for photobucket so it won't allow me to fix them.

That sucks as those are expensive lifters. Mine started making noise the last month or so. None at startup, then it starts after a couple minutes driving, then goes away after 5-10 minutes of driving. I have the Lunati high rpm hydraulic lifters. I hope there's nothing wrong with them as they are expensive!

Sorry, I thought you had Lunati link bars. I just noticed these are pics of LS7's

Those are all the stock lifters. The only thing that has me nervous is that everyone I talked to with a lifter noise saw pitting on the rollers, but I just have those lines, so I'm hoping that was lifter noise.

Livernois Stage 1 cam with DOD delete kit is on the way.

Nice, wish I had the confidence and tools to do that and swap cams..... good luck!

Good deal I just did a DOD delete on a 140,000 mile G8 and he only had one lifter messed up but it ran like crap we did the Livernois 1C cam on his he loves it.

ScreaminRedZ

What did the messed up lifter look like? I'm hoping that a lack of pitting means that I cought it early, and not that there's another issue.

Damn, that's nutty. Did the lifter tray break to allow that to happen?

Well, I finished taking it apart today and I had a broken timing chain dampener. I'll post pics when I get the chance.

Get the LS2 chain guide. Common for the hard plastic guide to break.

I ordered the Livernois DOD delete and Stage 1 Cam, which I know comes with a timing chain dampener. Does anyone know if it's the LS2 or just a stock replacement? If it's stock then I'll pick up an LS1 dampener.

Got the car running last night. I'll start another thread with pictures/videos of the DOD delete/cam swap and hopefully dyno numbers.
