Like the title says. I have found a local guy at a shop that's jus opening up that says he did something similar in his evo and that would be able to help us make a a functional dash kit that would work and look factory using the Factory buttons to finish things up. Jus need interest, he said he would need at least 25 people to get something started and sent to the prototyping company. Let me know who's interested and btw I'm in Chicago Illinois and the guys shop is called demon tuned performance in Arlington Heights. Let me know what you guys think.

Are you talking about something like this but with the factory knobs & buttons instead of looking like a french fry machine?

LOL. Does that serve coffee too?

I think the ideal would be to use an Android tablet or standalone device with a separate bluetooth/USB/I2C module interfaced to the A/C control that used a custom app on the Android device to get it done. Then you could use whatever source you wanted. No idea what that would involve, though. :)

I know it's hideous. And although a app or wife, Bluetooth solution would be nice I'm trying to make this a simple replacement with factory look and completely functional. Although I like the car I haven't been completely satisfied with it due to poor sound out of it with the factory head unit. Even with aftermarket amps and components in the doors it sounds terrible so this to me would be a blessing.

Then the person you want to get in touch with is matthewo here on the forum, ask him for some tips. He's got an absolutely ridiculous system in his G8.

I am totally interested. My last car had an aftermarket head unit with a USB connector. I had all my tunes in my car. I'm back to running around with mp3 cd's. It's driving me crazy. Have you guys seen that touch screen HVAC controller for our cars?

Blakss
08-25-2012, 01:04 PM
The aftermarket controller isn't sold anymore. Last one sold about a year ago. And the only dash kit wit hvac controls is on the first Page. And only sold in Australia. Personally, it might be functional but I find it hideous.

I'd love to keep the factory knobs but have an aftermarket double din. That would be sweet!

I had heard it wasnt available anymore.thought they had sold the last one and werent making anymore but guess i was wrong..
On another note i just finished talking to Mark Ryan from Alpine Aus via email and he informed me that there currently coming out with a new dash kit for our cars to be able to fit the new 8 inch Double din headunit they have came out with .So with a little luck that ugly HVAC controller will be taken care of along with a bigger all in one headunit.

Hello Jose,

We are currently in the process of developing a fascia kit here in Australia. When they are available, we will put a notice on our website. When this is up, please contact me and I will put you in touch with someone here who will be able to sell them to you.

This is the "regular" double din dash kit. The new one will accomadate a 8 inch screen double din and the controller will be some sort of lcd.
The new one is still in R&D and has not been released yet.

The new one is supposed to incorporate the OEM knobs for A/C control isn't it?

Svendingo
09-13-2012, 02:43 PM
Okay, so I'm happy again :-)

I didn't realise that there was a current version out there. Incorporating the original hvac switchgear is exactly what I hoped for.

How do we know this new kit will be made to fit our 5yr old cars. The new Holdens have a different dash setup then the G8's.
Question is why would Alpine make a kit to fit the old model cars, I'll have to see it to believe it.
Not very high hopes!

Blakss

I emailed them specifically about our 5 year old cars and they said they were currently working on them to accomadate the 8inch screen and although i wish they used the factory knobs I believe he said it was gunna use a small touch screen.

Sounds promising but viewing Alpine AU's website there is no 8inch unit listed.
So still have to see it to get excited!

Interesting.....tracking how you were able to do this, replacing the stock headunit that's all-or-nothing HVAC & Radio. Much better to have this option to replace the radio while retaining the HVAC another method.

The problem with an iPad or a tablet is that they are huge, and personally, look poor.

Also a target for theft.

As far as who asked/commented why they would make one, VEs are all over Australia, and there is not much of a difference in their radio foundation than the G8. Older means more affordable...and ready to upgrade...makes for an easy sell...

Really depends on the quality of install and ability to remove from the vehicle.

not sure if it was talked about in this thread or not but for the price of the unit being $2700 and change have any of you looked at the JHP setup for the G8. Pretty expensive but it keeps the climate control knobs and functionality with a 6.5" touchscreen. Just throwing this out there.

BlakSS....have you emailed the rep at Alpine.Au recently? I'm just curious if they have any time frame in mind. Also, we would just need the dash kit considering we would buy the head unit in the states for the USA Maps so hopefully they'll sell it seperately like they did with the old one.
