View Full Version : Question for 2008 G8 owners with sunroof

If you have a 2008 G8 with the sunroof switch where you set it and forget it and don't have to hold the frikkin' button, I have a question about how your sunroof control operates.
You pick a setting, then tag the button to pause it halfway. Now, if you move it to a new setting, will it start moving again? Or do you have to tag the button again to get it to move at all?

Tag? I have a 2009 that I received in 2008 and it has a switch that turns one way (to the passenger side) to make it go back and one way (to the drivers side) to pop up. If you pick one detent it'll go to the predetermined spot and stop, if you turn it any way after it stops it will move again. There's NO tagging anything... Just turn it one way or the other. Perhaps I'm not in the know, but I thought the '08 was the same...

I believe its the 09.5 and any NEW switches that require you to turn it to the setting you want, and then you must depress the button/switch until the sunroof reaches that setting...

Sorry for the confusion. Here's clarification/information.
All cars have common hardware. There's a Webasto control module with an attached switch. All switches have three vent settings when turned to the left and six roof-open settings when turned to the right. The switch can also be pressed. The software inside the control module is what varies.
2008 and 2009 cars require only that you select your setting by rotating the knob, and the roof will open. Optionally, while the roof is in the process of opening, you can press and release the switch (what I mean by "tagging") to pause the roof before it reaches your selection. Press and release the button again and it resumes moving to your selection.
In the 2009.5 model year, the software in the control module was updated to require that you select your desired position and hold the switch. There was a document released about it, though I can't remember if it was a TSB, just a notice, etc. But if you release the switch before the roof reaches your selected position, the roof stops short. Press and hold again and it resumes moving to your selection.
My assumption for why the 2009.5 change was made is improper or insufficient obstacle detection in the control module. It's possible that an obstruction would not properly pause the 2008 roof, causing damage to the roof or injury to the possibly human obstacle. So, to prevent injuries and avoid reworking the hardware, Webasto/GM updated the software to require that you hold the button in the assumption that your first reaction when little Johnny says "Ow!" will be to let go of the button.
Why I'm asking will become clear in the coming weeks, but I need to know how your 2008/2009 roof operates. If you would, try the following.
Make sure your roof is closed and the switch is centered.
Select roof open position 6 (all the way to the right).
Before the roof finishes opening, press and release the sunroof switch to pause the roof. It should now be stopped, with the switch set to full open but the roof having stopped short.
Move the sunroof selector switch around to a vent position (to the driver's side).
The question: does your roof automatically begin moving to the newly selected vent position? Or do you need to press and release the button again to release the pause set in step 3? My assumption is that it will just start moving again, but I need to be sure.
Thanks!

Pfft. I have in mind better things than just twist-to-open. ;)

I have a 09 and it will automatically start to go to the new position without having to "tag" it.
Hope that helps. :)

With all this secretive stuff I'm curious what you're up to. First it was seeing how many bodies fit in the trunk, now if the sunroof would chop off body parts on it's own. What exactly are you working on? :D

Though this is downright confusing... I'll have to PM the other member I'd talked to, where I thought I'd seen him demonstrate the ability to pause the roof. Thanks for the video!

Well, I call it the "Ginsu" mod... OK, not really. I need to get a little further, then I can post up.

If your thinking of doing something where the moon roof will close after the car is turned off and the key out like the windows will do, I want in on this! That was my first complaint with this car when I first bought it. HATE forgetting to close the roof and have to turn the car back on to close the roof.

It'd be nice if it was powered like the windows... Been there done it as well...
Well, I have a 2009 and I can turn mine to whatever setting I want and it will go automatically. I however, can also pause mine by pushing the button. Not sure why all of ours seem to be different.
The video isn't that great but you get the idea.

So I'm not crazy! Well, not too much. This kinda sucks. More scenarios to handle. What happens, Jdiz, if you pause it and then turn the switch to another setting?

Mine pauses also. I thought that was one of your questions OP. Turn to a position and it goes or pause if need be.

It is, but I also need to know what happens if you turn it full open, pause it, and then turn it to another setting *without* pushing the button again first. I need to know what happens, basically, if you try to get it to move while it's paused without specifically unpausing it.
I need to know the specifics of how your roof works since I don't have one to play with. That way I know how to "talk" to it.

I pray you're making something to get rid of the 9.5 awful design of the sunroof switch...
