I guess my parents were right: if you play with it too much, it'll fall off.
I decided to do the sub re-wiring mod (old fashioned solder method). Managed not to burn my face, hands, arms or the carpet in the trunk. I don't know about improved sound quality, but the subs definitely "kick" more now. That meant I needed to back off the sub amp a bit because I had it turned up too high. I fiddled around with it for a while and then, oh shit, the little knob fell off and landed in the space underneath the battery cradle.
No worries, I just pulled the trim out and turned the amp setting to where it needed to be with a pair of needle-nose pliers. That button is gone though, unless I pull the battery and the cradle out.
