for tips! Getting the 2 corsa db blacks i have welded into a custom catless x pipe. Don't want to cut the stock tips so i can resell the GT mufflers. And then once my broke ass can afford the ARH's i'll use the axle-back portion of this setup.

So...

Who's got some sweet suggestions for tips?

and

Anyone know the length of the stock tip from the muffler barrel to tip end?

Its called aluminized pipe.

Dont know the tip length, but the Borla Dual intercooled slash cut tip (pt# 20213) fits in the stock openings wonderfully.

and its cool for a midpipe? think it'll take the heat from the manifolds without the cats there?

what's this resonator hooker headers talks about in their tips?

A perfect way to finish off your exhaust system. Available with or without resonators, these tips feature a combination of black powdercoating, high luster chrome and a heat resistant Hooker decal to give your exhaust the classic finish it deserves.

The resonator typically is an extra piece of tubing in the pipe that "quietens" the exhaust note slightly, much like a resonator in the exhaust, just not as effectively. They are good for dropping the sound an extra decibel or three. I'll post an example...

Here is what I found during the testing of the system configurations. All runs were completed with the Kooks Longtube header and corresponding Xpipe with cats. The numerical representations are as follows:
1- Idle to 10 mph, dB from inside passenger compartment, windows up
2- 60 mph in 6th gear, same as above
3- WOT, windows up
4- WOT, windows down
5- WOT, exterior

Run #1 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Stock Axle back
1- 60
2- 65
3- 84
4- 87.2
5- 106.5

Run#2 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Kooks Axle Back
1- 71.6
2- 78.3
3- 88.3
4- 100.8
5- 120.2

Run#3 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Kooks Axle Back w/ Resonated tips
1- 70.2
2- 75.6
3- 87.9
4- 99.5
5- 118.1
* although dB levels were slightly lower, the "drone" was much less aggravating

Run#4 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Kooks Axle Back w/ No Tips
1- 76.6
2- 82.4
3- 101.2
4- 100.4
5- 118.9
* this test just performed for testing sake. dB levels do not reflect the "resonance" which was "interior trim rattling"

Run#5 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Kooks Axle Back w/ Borla Dual Round Intercooled Tips
1- 67.4
2- 71.3
3- 86.7
4- 94.3
5- 106.2
*interior drone virtually eliminated, very little vibration or resonance noticed

Run#6 Kooks LTH, Catted Xpipe, Kooks Axle Back w/ Borla Single Round Slash Cut Intercooled Tips
1- 69.1
2- 71.2
3-87.9
4- DNF
5- DNF

Almost every muffler shop in the world uses aluminized pipe for most of their exhaust done in shop. When you buy an exhaust that isn't stainless steel, its aluminzed steel. It'll still hold up just not as long as stainless (ie 100,000 miles vs 200,000 miles)

Depending on what you want for them I'd be interested

The stock tip is 13 1/4" long and 2 1/4" i/d.
The muffler case is 13 1/2" long.

This is awesome data/info. Thanks for posting. Got a sound clip? I can't believe how much the intercooled Borla tips helped with drone and even Db levels. They look awesome too!

I tried to get good sound clips but was not satisfied with the audio quality of the recordings. These numbers in themselves still do not accurately portray how much difference their is in the system once you get away from those tips that come with it from Kooks. I've talked with George R extensively about it after the testing, but we're not sure if its a change they will make. The Slash cut intercooled (single) was wonderful sounding; deep and powerful but with VERY little interior issues

Did you use a SPLM to get your readings?

I would have to look at the exact instrument we used again to know exactly which make/model we used

If you're saying i'm ghetto rigging an exhaust and not doing it the "right" way that's just lame. i don't even have a first job let alone want to get 2 jobs. I'm having the system made because after the ARH's go down to what i think is a reasonable price i'm going to have the system hacked off at the mufflers and have them welded into the ARH X with 304. This is a temporary solution that's only gonna cost me sub $200. And i don't really care for any of the aftermarket stuff that i could buy the "right" way so why not get something i want and have a unique setup. the last thing i want is a g8 gt with a kooks or arh system to the stock tips with a canned vector tune like 8000 other people have. i'm all about being unique. so basically, if you were trying to take a pot shot at what i'm planning you can just not come back in this thread. lets keep it nice and civil on this board and not rip each other. for fucks sake penguin had 6 fuckin tips coming out of his car and people were nice about it.

No criticism intended, it was just a suggestion. Sorry you took it that way Tugboat. And who am I to criticize you, hek, your one up on the best times list, with a lot less modification than I have!

HAHA!! And whats wrong with a KOOKS to the stock mufflers and tips? It's the only way to keep it under the radar!!! Especially when all the other axle-backs sound like I'm lying down in an MRI machine while driving down the road!!! LMAO
