I am going to purchase the HJC CL-31 Racer II. Anyone use this or one like it?

HJC makes a pretty decent helmet. I take it they don't require Snell rated helmets? I think our SCCA club did.

Always best to get a Snell SA 2005 or better rated bucket; that way you can use it anywhere.

The HJCs are SNELL rated M2005 which is tops for now. I think my local SCCA requires SNELL 95 or better. Found them for $89 each with free shipping. I like cheap safety.

M is a motorcycle rating but I believe its also acceptable for NHRA, not positive though.

Yeah, as far as I can tell from SNELLs site it is good for SCCA too. Several of the people use ones like it only older versions.

Most motorcycle helmets won't work for (serious) car events. M rated helmets are really only good for one hit.

I think the car helmets can withstand a lot more beating.

It's now a proven fact that Snell '95 and '05 are less safe than a straight good quality DOT bucket. Snell has actually conceded and has reduced the requirements to become Snell.

True story!

snell ratings are... overrated. DOT is the way to go... and before y'all start yelling at me. Yes I do know the standards. Yes I know what the differences are and yes I know SNELL is supposed to be better.

It isn't.

That is all

IMHO.

Regardless of that, tracks simply won't allow DOT helmets in cars, they require Snell rating.

I prefer BSI ratings myself...

The HJC helmets are both SNELL and DOT approved.

Have it, like it. Suggest taking a look at the AR-3. Same style, SA2000, and on close-out for about the same price.

Thanks, does HJC make the AR-3

Which if I remember correctly are closer to DOT than Snell.

It must be a really nice helmet ! I will have to see how much racing I get to do before I can invest that kind of money on it. I hope I will get to do a lot.

I could use it in my backyard to protect me from all the trees falling since they are covered in ice and snow still.

Well, it did not fit so I had to exchange it for a bigger size. Now the wait starts again.

Anyone else being challenged with "no more open face helmet" rules? Had to go full face. I hate it.

For our class (Pro or Sportsman) NHRA rules state specifically full or open faced. just got 09 rule book today and verified it still says that.

What I want and what I am getting are 2 different things! lol Since I have to get the rear wheels, ET Streets, Trans cooler and lines/fittings, misc stuff to finsh up the motor, I will get either the GForce Eliminator ($149.95) or the Pro Eliminator ($249.95) from Summit. It will probably be the Pro as I want matte black.
