I thought I start a new thread to see what our trans. are shifting at after a tune, anybody's tune. I just had my tcm tune adjusted by Kirk @ VMS and man do I like how it is now. 1-2 is at 6150 rpm and the 2-3 is at 6200+ rpm. And does it shift fast, whoa!

6200 is the standard shift point in most tunes unless a cam is installed to increase RPM range.

Not like it's a big difference, but I have a 6250 rpm 2-3 shift on my sport shift mode.... it's stock on my drive mode (6000).

OK. Good to know. Seems like we're all on the same page so far. I guess the shift point needs to be increased to .... about 6500 rpm with a cam?

it depends on the cam... I think Paul's is set to 6800 with our stage 1 cam... he should know 100% for certain as he probably lives on the rev-limiter now with how little traction he has :D

lol. yeah his is at 6800 rpm. Which leads me to another question. I know now with the cam, the engine can handle those rpms but what about the tranny itself?
Check this out. Look at the max RPM shift speed on this tranny...

A little confused here.....I have the 20% tq management tune...and too my knowledge all my shifts are at 6000.

So do I need to get it flashed again.

OFF topic ......I just had the exhaust redid again...removed the center muffler and the 2 bullets with had a H-pipe fabbed in......do I need a retune????

we have numerous 6l80e equipped cars shifting in excess of 7k... trust me, it's not as weak as people make it seem... it's just all in the tune :D

Well, I just had my middle muffler & resonators removed and a Magnaflow X pipe put in their place. No engine retune needed according to Kirk @ VMS but I did have my tcm tune updated and it was so worth it. Used to shift at 6000 rpm on the 1-2 and maybe 5900 rpm on the 2-3. Now, it's 6150 on the 1-2 and about 6250 on the 2-3. Rev limiter is at about 6400-6500 rpm. Much better. Hope this helps ya.

So...hows it feel? compared to the 6000 shift? Is that the 20% tq management tcm? That's what I have.

What's weird..? Today...I got on the interstate and thought I'd floor it thru all the gears. 1st to 2nd..the usual get sideways..2nd to 3rd..the normal bark em. The 3rd to 4th was pretty good...but the 4th to 5th(yea I was moving) it shifted hard enough to make the dash pop..no wheel spin thou. I didn't stay in it long enough to see what the 5th to 6th would do....that'd be about 175.

6325 1-2, 6300 2-3 rev limit 6350. No cam. Sport mode only.

Like night and day. I'd say base on your description that the TM is at about 25-30%. Since installing the Magnaflow X pipe (already have Kooks shorty headers) and reflashing the tcm the car feels quite a bit faster. I mean it's a beast now especially winding out 2nd gear. The 1-2 shift sometimes actually burns the tires a bit, not just a good scratch. Yesterday I punched it at about 15-20 and when it kicked down into 1st gear it lightly burned the tires all the way through 1st gear. Really like it. It is so much faster now that I'm beginning to wonder if I even need to cam the thing. Probably will though as the intake & heads on this car deserve a good cam for company.

Are the higher shift points better? Engines with the basic CAI and tune are peaking around 5700 and begin to taper off there. One set of raw data shows power down by 7 at 6000. Anyone with a CAI and tune have the HP numbers at 6100, 6200 along with the peak HP/rpm?

I have the numbers and I'm on board with your thinking. I have my car shifting at 5800 1-2 and then up to 6000 2-3 and 3-4 for the 1/4 mile.

With the weather, I'm unable to test, but if our theory's are correct, I should be faster, shifting sooner than most tuners program, on the first shift.

Looking at my graph....my peak hp is at 5650. At 6100 it looks like..330,and about 320 at 6200.
Peak tq is at 4650 and is down to 270 at 6200.

Thanks for the numbers. Where's your trans shifting at?

BTW great gain with the gears. I wouldn't have expected .5 sec with a small change like that. I would have thought you'd need 3.70s or lower or a torque converter.

A rule of thumb is to shift when HP drops 15HP lower than peak, meaning past peak.

This keeps the engine in the best power range after the shift. Shifting too early will cause the engine to drop to low in the RPM range after the shift is complete.

That makes sense!

I have to do the same with my bikes!

Thanks Kirk...that'd be around 6200 then, for me. I may have to get the cables sent out for a new tune.
So...can the stock valve train(dod) handle more than 6200 rpms? I also removed the center muffler and the bullets...so it might be alittle better flowing...

Thanks Kirk

Time to go raise my shift :)

Take a little more TQ management out and that will firm the shifts up.
