View Full Version : P0741 Trans lock stuck off

Some strange things happening the last 2 days. First off I installed a FTI 2800 stall in Feb. 3 days after install car started slipping in every gear. Found most if the clutches burned. Installed Alto 3/5/R and 4/5/6 clutch packs. They lasted a month before starting to burn and cup. Had the trans built with all OEM clutches with extra OEM steel and fiber in both of those clutch packs. Car has had issues with "pulsing" when the converter is locked and under slight load. Its always felt strange during lockup. I've been working with G8-4-Speed who did my trans work and tuning. The last 2 days I've gotten the code P0741 in the thread title. When this happens the car denies shifts about 5th gear and the converter will not lock. It will stay in 5th gear unless I use manual mode to downshift. If I clear the code everything resets. Curious what everyone's thoughts were on possible route cause? Converter? Solenoid issue?

"P0741 The TCM detects TCC slip greater than 125 RPM for 5 seconds when the TCC is commanded ON. This must occur 4 times." So its either not locking up or you have a faulty torque converter clutch pressure control solenoid which of course is intergrated with the valve body. I doubt its a pump problem and if your fluid levels are all ok and you didnt have these issues before the converter was installed then I would say its a converter issue but thats just my two cents.

Didn't he just buy a Yank and the code never came back?

Search his posts, but I think it was the converter.

I just received confirmation via PM that desertg never threw this code again after switching to his Yank converter.
IF he made no other changes when he got the new stall, it seems to point to something wrong with the stall.
If there is only one thing that can cause what you and he experienced AND what you both are experiencing are identical, then his solution probably is your solution. If several factors could case the condition, you need to find your solution and not just copy his.

I'm having the same problems as well... How much is it running to replace these clutch packs? Would it just be cheaper to replace the entire transmission?

First off which aspect of "I have the same problem" are you referring to? The code, the trans slipping? The OEM clutch packs are pretty inexpensive from Greg at Pace Performance.

He is having converter clutch issue, not trans. The trans has been shifting great last I knew. Converter clutch isn't holding/holding up. Depends on who you use for the transmission, could be much cheaper to fix.

I fixed the over heating issue. Just threw on a bigger transmission cooler. Seeing temperatures no higher than 150 now. But I think damage has already been done. I was driving around about a week and a half ago when the car just went into second gear. Code said that the control solenoid was stuck on. Took it to the dealer, they said after taking it apart that I damaged 3-4 clutch packs or something like that. I couldn't leave the car there to get repaired because I was leaving for ga in like 4 days. So now I'm here... Car just sitting waiting to have someone to work on it. Sorry would have posted this sooner but it been stoooopid on my end.

You cooked the alto clutches. This is the fourth time my trans will need to be rebuilt. I didn't fully comprehend exactly how heat sensitive those clutch packs are an no, I didn't have a cooler. As Virus said, just replace the clutches with all stock stuff. Greg had a package he put together for me to replace EVERY clutch in the trans with all new seals, etc and it was a touch over $200. From what I have been able to gather, the aftermarket torque converters add quite a bit of heat to the trans fluid. So this combined with the sensitivity of the Alto clutches = fail.
Good luck though! This is why I am getting rid of the auto this summer and putting in a 6 speed manual from a Camaro.

Well keep an eye on my build then. I am hoping to be able to pull the entire transformation off for around $4k.

I certainly wouldn't switch from FTI to Yank without more research. I've had both and the FTI performed a hell of a lot better than the Yank. Granted they were not the same RPM so its apples to oranges to some degree but I would say that FTI makes at least as good a unit as Yank.

I have not had a converter in any of my cars better then FTI. In my gtos I had tried several companies yank being one of them and finally went with FTI. After seeing te difference I was a customer for life. There is a reason the two fastest g8s on the board use FTI. I am having a multi disk built for me now that I will be testing.
Best of luck.

I had a FTI 3200. When I built my tranny after stock failed century told me they were sending converter to be cleaned by circle d. Well they ended up cleaning and rebuilt as well. So it is a FTI/Circle D converter that has the record you could say.
