There is a lot of debate and wondering about Active Fuel Management, so lets take a poll and see where we are at.

Quite likely for mine too but watching the cam threads closely lately.

Yea, it really cuts down on my posts of "yup" and similar.

Shoulda bought a GXP G8~~~~

To change....or not to change....that is the question.....

I agree that it is: ANNOYING..... AGRIVATING.....IRRITATING...

but.... it's there... and it's probably cheaper to keep it or replace it with a GXP..... Besides, if we can duplicate Charlie's 12.70, I don't really care.....

RRM:snowmobile:

for Charlie.... and there was the time I hit a culvert on my hot rod snowmobile... 19 days in Hospital with broken hip..... "reality check #3"

Reality check #4 .... Wendy went out and bought a house while I was in HosP...

How many mpg's do you stand to lose if you scrap AFM? It can't be much. The gears are so high it's like idling in top gear.

GRRRR8
08-15-2008, 07:34 PM
Maybe 3 tops. I will know soon enough. I may try something completely different then has been done to see if I can get the TQ higher. Mike has done such an excellent job, I just dont know if its worth the experiment, but my mind keeps saying I gotta do it!

I'm keeping my AFM for now. My current combined avg is 24.5
It was higher until I put the headers on. next year it might be different if I get another daily driver.

Keeping it, like I've said only going bolt on's so I'll retain the AFM.

If you get rid of it what are the benefits besides the odd sound you get going down the road and vibration

Keeping it! It's a lease and they frown on that sort of stuff... lol

Plus I want the 1-3mpg.

On my way to Indy this morning, I got 32.3 MPG. I filled up, reset the DIC and then left the gas station. When I got to I65 it was at 5.4 MPG.
68 was my top speed I think, and Indy is a couple hundred feet lower than where Iive. AFM 90% of the time.
25 mile trip.
I'm keeping AFM!

I use this car for a DD. There is no way I am getting rid of the AFM. Honestly, if I wanted a platform to make fast I would of chose a different car. Basic boltons are not out of the question for me though, but the AFM is staying.

This is sort of hard to believe but I have had my DOD turned off for about 3 weeks now and my MPG has went up 0.4. To be fair, I did two things to my car at the same time. I added the LT's and disabled DOD. The previous 2000 miles on my car I averaged ~18.0 MPG but since resetting 3 weeks ago, I am averaging 18.5 MPG. I can not get as good MPG with DOD off and highway driving is about half of my commute (if you call 66 a highway).

If after all of my planned modifications there are ANY unpleasant noises generated from AFM, I will strongly consider shutting it off.

A moderate amount of normal non-AFM generated exhaust drone would not bother me given the car I came from was a drone-monster! I don't want any fart-rice noises though. Unfortunately, I can definitely hear/feel some potential for accentuating the AFM low load, low speed fart-rice vibrations with intake and exhaust modes. We'll see.

Not sure if I should keep my afm or not. 15mpg for city and 17.9 for city/highway when I baby this thing makes me wonder if something is wrong with mine.

Turned mine off (thanx Kirk!), car sounds and feels much better. Don't see much mileage difference yet.

I like it but I wish it were tuned to be a little more effective and not turn off with the slightest dip in the throttle.

Do you have any type of tune yet? This does seem to help a lot.

Are you doing everything a 1/4 mile at a time? You are either getting some seriously bad gas, or you have a heavy foot.

I've never even had this car at half throttle. I guess I'll just wait until spring and see if the warmer weather will help at all. I'm very confused as to why this car sucks on mileage so much.

I don't know if I will keep mine. If it starts making noise or I can gain HP from turning it off, then I will deactivate it since it does not seem to help much in South Florida. You have to use the brakes so much down here since nobody knows how to drive. My DOD does not stay on much even when I am on the hwy.

AFM still works in manual mode.

As far as I can tell, whenever I flip to manual mode on the highway, or on the back streets, my AFM never activates. Car stays in 8cyl mode.

Sport Mode however, AFM does still come on.

Keeping. It's really not an issue if you know your car. I drive in manual most of the time around town. On long trips let it rip! If you just can't stand not to know if 4 or 8 cyl. mode monitor it with a DashHawk. I always felt it was a "mental" issue with most people. If that's not what you want to hear, wait 'til you get OOOOOOLD and you won't know the difference, or give sh*t! :p

I absolutely hate AFM!!!!! In my car I get sooo much vibration anytime I am at a sustained speed under 1700 rpm when it is in auto or sport modes. I have to drive my car in constant manual mode just so I don't have to feel the terrible vibration. I didn't buy this car to be a manual. Manual is fun when I want it, but not in everyday traffic. It feels like I'm in a POS Yugo!!!!
