I did misunderstand. I apologize. It wasn't on the major news outlets immediately. Now it's all over them. Sorry for snapping.

No apology needed, it happens.

crazy susicide birds
They need some kind of grill in front of the engines.

Looks like everyone made it out ok. The pilot did a good job getting the aircraft down.

Wouldn't help. I saw a military helicopter that hit an eagle, punched a 2x2 hole in an aluminum sponson (sort of a stub wing thing).

It happens a lot...I have no idea why they have not done something about this problem.
Grrrr8!

The grille would just get sucked in with the bird.
I had a customer in Calif that rebuilt engines for Northwest Airlines. Part of my work with them was measuring the leading radius on the blades. The attachment on the blades is called "The Christmas Tree" because of it's shape. It's actually held in by centrifugal force. You would be surprised of the damage the blade sustains on normal operation.

Just better bird detection is needed.

This pilot had a ton of flight time, plus F4 time. His experience saved everyone's life.

Only real prevention is to get rid of all the birds. Must have been a large flock of good sized birds. Over 70% of the air gets bypasses around the core of most turbofans. I've taken birds right down the engine without doing damage. Looks like these guys did a great job of keeping her in the air until clear of the populated area. And keeping the wings level while ditching with zero time to prepare is amazing. Lucky they didn't catch a wingtip and roll it over. Pucker factor must have been out of this world! The CVR will be interesting. Only place I ever want to see that scenario is in the simulator!

You do have to give props to the flight attendants. They were the ones that controlled the chaos and the evacuation. I'm not shortchanging the pilots at all. It takes hella skill to land in water and nobody died.

Pilots will get it to the crash site. It's the F/A's that will save your butt. Always tried to make that point when I did my cabin announcements. They just serve peanuts and drinks in their spare time while they're not busy saving your life. Just don't marry one. Ask me how I know.

They did a fantastic job of getting everyone out. I was watching it before. Stupid ass birds. Down here we gotta worry about deer, up there, birds.
