Hello!

Just traded in my black 2000 Grand Prix GTP for a 2009 MGM G8 V6. Been hitting these and other boards for info and figured it was time to join up.

Any other folks in the Upstate NY area around?

Nice car you traded in. I factory ordered 1998 Grand Prix GTP and traded it in for my G8 GT a few years ago.

I grew up in Albany, NY from 1979 to 1989 and now just visit family there once a year. Miss the Falls there but don't miss Winters at all!

Welcome! I am originally from Schenectady, but moved to Texas in 1979. I sure do miss it sometimes. I was up there in 2009 and so much had changed in 30 years.

I too just stepped out of a Grand Prix and into a G8 V6 just last week. I had a 96 Grand Prix that I swapped a 3.8 supercharged motor in and a 98 Grand Prix GT. Done with front wheel drive for awhile!

Thanks!

Been in the Schenectady area for almost 20 years now and it really has changed a lot. I remember living downtown when it could be pretty scary at night. Now it is a beautiful area with some nice restaurants and a great movie theater.

I was going to hold out for a GT, but got a great deal on this pristine, 13K mile 09 V6 that was certified pre-owned. On paper this car should have been about par with my Grand Prix, but I'm finding myself a little let down by the inability to spin the tires even with the TC turned off. A week before I traded it in, I laid rubber with the Grand Prix getting out of my work parking lot in a hurry with TC turned on and that was with an 11 year old car and newish tires.

Of course this has me looking at a CAI and already making a list... Heh.

They make quite a few parts for the V6.

Welcome! So far I think you're the closest to me...only 4.5 hours away ;-(

Congrats on the purchase - I need some pics!!!!!!

P.S. I moved from a 2004 Bonneville to the G8 - loved that car but it doesn't compare to the G8. I'm sure I would feel the same way with the V6 as well!

Should have some pics this weekend. I hate winter in the Northeast!

Don't get me wrong, I love the G8! Every other thing about the car is better than the Grand Prix.

Of course, once you start thinking about making changes to the car, it opens Pandora's box.... The great thing is, if I get appearance add-ons, I can bring them over to a GT if I'm not satisfied with the V6 :D

I miss Jumpin Jacks! It was 1 of the 1st places I went to when I got off the plane in 2009. I saw the pics of the flood last year where it was completely under water. I still have family there and in Colonie.

Both that bridge and Freeman's Bridge were closed. I usually go over Freeman's bridge to work and made a run for Scotia. It was crazy to see only the tops of the umbrellas and the roof sticking out of the water. The stockade and half of downtown was without power for two and a half days.

When the second storm hit, they were afraid the lock in Rotterdam Junction was going to go and they started closing the bridges. I ended up having to go to the Northway to get home. There were people who took six hours to get to the north side of the Mohawk from Schenectady that day. Fortunately one of my co-workers has connections with Schenectady County and got an early warning that they were closing and we high-tailed it out of work, so it "only" took me two hours.

This winter has been like nothing I have ever seen. We've got greenish grass in February. Definitely not complaining, though. I couldn't have picked a better winter to re-acclimate to a RWD car.

My Mom lost a cousin in the flood. He tried to cross the bridge to get to their fruit stand/icecream place and didn't make it. I can't think of his name, but the family was very well known.

It is a small world that is for sure! :)

Yah, during the flood everything was grid locked when they started closing bridges. I work in Niskayuna and live in Latham but had to sneek through developments and then went way out of my way to go around the massive grid lock trying to get to the north side of the Mohawk. At least I didn't have to cross a bridge.

No snow on the ground so far. But I've been reminded that in 2008 it was the same until we got slammed on Valentines and St Patricks. Keep your fingers crossed.

Latham Circle Mall had some great arcades back in the day, like Barrel of Fun.

I went to Latham Circle Mall with my wife in mid January... I was really, really shocked how much it has declined in even the last several years. It is 90% empty now and smells of mold. In the old food court area, the floors are severely warped. it was so skeezy I wouldn't even consider going to the movie theaters there now.

They need to level it like Mohawk Mall and replace it with a nice plaza or something.

WOW! I remember Mohawk Mall as a kid. Everytime we went I got a Orange Julius. :)

I did not get a chance to go to Latham while I was there. I saw a lot of Schenectady, Colonie. A little bit of Albany and a decent amount of Altamont. I missed the Altamont fair by 2 days! I sure could have used a funnel cake.

Here is one for you long time Upstate New Yorkers. Does anybody remember Mike's Submarines and Neba"s at State St and the Crosstown? When I was a kid that is where all the hot rodders went before they raced. Good memories for me having read this post.

Fonda Speedway was another one. Of course Lebanon Valley. Summers were usually spent at Lake George. I raced go karts in Cobleskill at Dodge City Speedway which was right by Howe Caverns. Good times for sure.

By the time I got to the area, Mike's had been relocated to a plaza about a quarter mile farther up state street towards Colonie. I used to live right over by Stadium Golf Course in the apartments there and Mike's was a favorite place to get food. They had a hot roast beef sub called "The Sweet Mikey" that was amazing.

I'm originally from up by Lake Champlain, so we'd always go into Vermont or to the other side of Lake George from the touristy area in the summers when I was a kid. I have fond memories of fishing on Lake Champlain and not so fond memories of the time my dad took me ice fishing on Lake George.

I would hang out at Lebanon Valley with my older step brother back in the day. Great track! I also saw my first and only Dodge Super B in the wild in Colonie one night when we were all cruising.

Ice fishing is brutal. Used to do that with my high school friends on Schroon Lake. The one measly fish we caught was frozen on the line, and we bailed because it got so cold people's cars and generators were failing!

Lebanon Valley was where my car addiction started when I was 5 (1972). :)

I have been to Schroon Lake! Not when it was frozen though.

Heh, doesn't stay that way for long with the sand and salt on the roads, eh? Fortunately the air museum is literally next door to the car wash.

You ever gotten together with the local GTO/Pontiac group? I was thinking of looking them up. I've also heard there's and active GrandAm group that is broadening to all Pontiacs.

Hello & welcome. Your car is way too clean for upstate NY in the winter. I'm originally from Troy, but hung around Latham, Colonie & Albany. Relocated to Rochester years ago. Love this mild winter.

Thanks! Yeah, that is on the list once the weather gets a bit warmer! I plan on deleting Pontiac and the chicklets (sounds like a band name!), adding the caddy 3.6L badge and a shark fin.
