View Full Version : Taking my front seats out.

What will happen if I take out my front seats? I want to remove the passenger seat and install my modified laptop mount. I also want to remove the seat every time I race. Will the laptop mount interfere with the airbag sensors, and can the SRS light stay on for long periods?
I'm also asking about the rear seat. I believe I need to have a divider made if I remove the rear seat. I was thinking aluminum with black crinkle finish paint to attempt to hise it in my "Onyx" interior. What is legal?
Thanks for any info.

If by legal you mean sanctioning body, all of them have a minimum thickness requirement for non-stock flooring. I don't recall what it is (the very thing you need) but it differs by material. How it is attached and sealed may also matter. The rear seat bottom can be removed without a problem because the floor is sealed. Removing the seat back would require a firewall because the battery is back there.
Sorry. Not helpful because you know that already. What sanctioning body?

Milan Raceway in MIchigan, I believe, is IHRA. I am having a police car laptop mount modified to fit my seat bolts. Oh crap, I just read a DIY thread that said the front seats only have two rear bolts, and slip in tabs at the front. Might have to rethink that one. The upper mount is adjustable to "clamp" in the laptop. I have had yhe mount in another car so I know the laptop will work. I just have to get the lower half to work. Don't know what brand it is.
I was going to also buy a small battery and have a removable firewall made for the read seat top. Now I don't know if I have to have it sealed or not. Just starting to plan all of this stuff. Thanks for the quick replies.

When I put my Katzkin interior in and removed my seats. The directions told me to disconnect my battery first since I would be disconnecting the airbag wires that go to our seats. Those would be the yellow connectors on the bottom. If I am wrong, please someone else chime in please...

Thanks 6.0, good info. I also looked on the Milan Raceway site. They are NHRA. I attempted to get the online NHRA rules, and they wanted me to join before they would even tell me anything. Go figure. I will check with a friend of mine that builds race cars, and frames, for a living. I just remembered his number and will call him. Any experience wtih the laptop mount, or rear seat rules, keep em coming.
Oh, one more question. If I decide to buy Procar or "Recaro?" seats, can I permenently mount them?

Yellow wrapped harnesses are GENERALLY indicative of the air bag system

As far as installing a racing seat you are going to need to probably buy an extra set of seat rails and modify them to accommodate the racing seat. Sanctioning bodies are going to be different in each case whether they will accept this bassackwards seat mounting that Holden designed. I checked with a friend at Rallysportdirect.com and they havent ever seen a seat rail like that from the major racing seat OEMs.

The seats I have looked at come wtih the sliding tracks. I would just have to have brackets made, welded to the floor, and measure for the right height. I just don't want me SRS light on forever...lol

I used the JotoDesk universal laptop mount, bolted it to the floor. No way to turn airbag light off with racing seats. I put a little black adhesive dot over it..

Thanks Wreckwriter. I'll look at the Jotto desk site and see what I need. What seats did you put in, and how did you get them in there? Can you privde any pics?

The rear seats hardly weight anything at all.... is it even worth removing the rear seats.... I almost positive you can remove the bottom rear seat and have no issues with the rules... the vertical back seat may be an issue... but again they hardly weight anything..... just not worth the issue in my opinion....

gr8lover. I do remember the bottom seats weighting nothing at all. I was going to remove the uppers for the most savings. I am starting to wonder if its worth it. I have helped pit crew some regional race cars, including SCCA road course cars. The old saying is worry about the ounces, and the pounds will come. I just don't know if all the extra work is really worth it for a car raced only a couple times a year. I'll check the rules and think about it. Thanks.

If you don't race all the time its not worth it.

I think NHRA minimum is .032 for aluminum and .024 for steel. You would need to seal the seams as well.
