Charlie or whomever else wants to chime in, my son and I are restoring this 89 Formula. The engine compartment is filled with dust and light oil - basically 20+ years of crud.
I was thinking about using a steam cleaner to clean up the engine bay rather than degreaser and hose or power washer. Either way has to be easier than removing every single part.
Think the steam cleaner can work??

Use Purple Power out of a spray bottle. Then use a paint brush on the heavier grease. Then hose it off. If you use anything make sure you cover up the intake and the distributor.
Purple Power can be bought at Advance Auto for $6.50 a gallon.

Purple power works great, I'd wear a mask and gloves...it's very pungent. To me at least.

The smell doesn't bother me but if you use it a lot it does dry out your hands. It won't hurt the paint as long as you wash it off. I use it on my rims and tires.

I would do as posted, but you can use a pressure washer, just use the lower pressure nozzle in delicate areas. Steam can cause various issues so I would not do that.

Steam cleaners are great for grungy frames, firewalls and engines...purple power it after the steam to get rid of oil/grease residues...just becareful around computers/distributors/electronics stuff...same warning you would get using a power washer....I used steam cleaner on my old truck just fine, but i've used the other two methods two

bring a can of WD-40 with you. If it won't start after, pull the plug wires and spray WD-40 into them to get rid of the water. I'm guessing it's a electronic ignition.

Yup. GM HEI with remote coil (not coil in cap).
