I keep getting a check engine light with my car. I think it is the gas cap. Does anyone know if I take it to Auto Zone could they check to see if that is the issue? Also if it is not a faulty gas cap is there any other section to check that could be causing this? I am cretin it is the GAS cap because it comes and goes and when I first got the car it did this to me and I took it to the dealer for them to tell me this. It also seems like it is happening when the gas level gets down around a half of tank and below. Not sure but that is the way it seems. Let me know what you all think.

Gas cap issues are very common. AZ should be able to pull the code and if it is a "EVAP small leak detected" type code then run buy the dealer and get a new gas cap. Make sure they have it in stock as they seem to always be out of them.

If it is the problem EVAP small leak detected it will also have the code of p0455. I get it once in awhile, but I clear it with my DashHawk.

Code for a gas cap should be a p0442 small leak or p0455 large leak...These cars have a bunch of problems with them and they actually extended the warranty on all G8's for gas cap problems to 10 years or 120,000 miles...Here is the campaign

So if it is one of these codes will the dealer give me a new cap at no charge under this coverage adjustment? Thanks for the info, you all rock!

Oh yea, the new one has instructions on it also that say "Turn gas cap 3 clicks or Service Light may Turn on" haha pretty funny, but an easy way to see if you got the re-designed one. I think the newest ones are blue writing, I replaced mine last October and I have the one with white writing with the above statement, but haven't had any problems with it.

This is what the campaign says...

Condition

Some 2008 and 2009 model year Pontiac G8 vehicles may have a vapor leak at the fuel tank filler cap. If the leak becomes large enough, it may result in a diagnostic code being set and the illumination of the Check Engine Light on the instrument cluster. On vehicles built after November 2008 a check fuel cap message may also be displayed on the instrument cluster.
Special Coverage Adjustment

This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles (193,000 km), whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle was originally placed in service, regardless of ownership.

Dealers are to replace the fuel tank filler cap. The repairs will be made at no charge to the customer.

For vehicles covered by Vehicle Service Contracts, all eligible claims with repair orders on or after November 10, 2010, are covered by this special coverage and must be submitted using the labor operation codes provided with this bulletin. Claims with repair orders prior to November 10, 2010, must be submitted to the Service Contract provider.
Vehicles Involved

Involved are certain 2008 and 2009 model year Pontiac G8 vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints:

Year Division Model From Through

2008 Pontiac G8 8L103922 8L988888

2009 Pontiac G8 9L128483 9L321026

Well I stopped by Advance auto today and they checked engine and told me it was a Lean 1 "cylinder" and Lean 2 code "DOD" that were cycling. Both on the drivers side. When he said that I thought maybe it was the intake system I added but now I am not sure. Any thoughts on this and could the gas cap still throw a code like this?

Check all connections at CAI and make sure there are no loose (air) connections. Unplug the MAF sensor and reconnect.

My 2008 GT got several new gas caps from the dealer, but the engine light problem persisted. The dealer finally replaced the filler neck and the problem went away. This was done almost a year ago.

Well what do you know. I open the hood to find the strap that holds the Yella Terra to the MAF had come off and was flopping around the MAF. When I instald the tube, that was the one thing I did not like was the difference in size of the tube to the MAF. Does anyone know where I can get those inserts that fills the gap, so the tube does not have to be cranked down so much to stay on the MAF? As always you guys rock!

I know RotoFab uses a spacer for this reason. Maybe they can sell you one.
