Associated Press

DETROIT - General Motors Co. is recalling 38,400 Pontiac G8 models to reprogram the front-passenger air-bag module.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Saturday that the air-bag modules for the 2008 and 2009 models might not comply with federal standards for head injury protection.

No complaints, crashes or injuries have been reported related to the issue, GM said.

But the company found that in case of a crash, the air-bag sensor could be delayed and put some passengers at increased risk for a head injury. GM said crash tests found that the risk was limited but slightly higher for small women sitting in the front passenger seat.

GM dealers will reprogram the sensing and diagnostic module at no charge.

The G8 was manufactured in Australia and imported to the United States

It's A G8!

I know a couple of people have mentioned this before with their wifes in the front seat.

:hmm: is this ONLY gender specific...

I had my first airbag light last week after I started it up, my wife was not in the car. I shut it down and restarted and everything was fine. i know alot of people have posted about having airbag light issues, wonder if this is the real reason behind the recall. Its funny that they said nobody has complaints.

I agree .. I also can add a few more things but fat chance in hell GM will do this. GM rotors always have been junk .. the struts should of been a no brainer but GM w/ brains = dangerous.

They mention that reprogramming the airbag module is necessary...is this going to be an issue if i have an ECM/TCM tune on the car? Now that I have the GXP differential in the car I don't think I'm able to put everything completely back to stock before bringing it in for dealer visits. Should I be worried that they'll notice I have the car tuned when performing this recall?

^^^^+1 on this.
My warranty is gone now that I put the 2300 on but don't want to have to go back to my tuner and have him reinstall my tune. Hope this will not effect the whole ECM/TCM.

Wait, whaaa.....?? THREE recalls? Thankfully, I haven't (so far) had any issues with the struts or door lock mechanism (what happens to it?), rotors aren't really that bad.

All I've had so far (30k miles), I managed to talk the dealer into doing the full pump kit on PIP4395E, the floor mat retainer broke, and I forgot to tell the dealer how goddam slow my driver's window comes up. Maybe if you guys tell me about the struts and door locks I can schmooze the dealer into these preemptive strikes (err, warranty fixes :D) before 36k! I'll fix the rotors by doing a CTS-V swap from Greg@WasSlow :)

this is a safety recall, not warranty work. They will do it regardless. The question as to whether or not the airbag module programming affects an ECM tune...I cannot answer. I do not think so, but there are others here that will know fo ' sho'!

Now, now, be nice. I am the wife and although I don't drive it much I'm content to be in the passenger seat but what do they consider "small women"? I'm 5'7'' at around 120 lbs. If I'm safer driving, then move over hubby. :auto: The G8 is parked already for the winter but we'll look into this with the dealer and maybe address it in the spring.

Just want to be sure! No. Now I'll say this, there could be some crazy tech out there that could go into your tcm/ecm and screw with it be cause he hates his job or your car, but that is not where they go to do the airbag reprogram.

One of America's best automakers, General Motors created a big news for the first week of the month and these includes the recalls of 38,000 Pontiac G8s over air-bag issue and the plan of major which I found in this article Despite record first-half profit, GM plans major cuts (http://www.cardealexpert.com/news-information/auto-news/gm-profit-margin-major-cuts/). GM turned in a record first half for profits this year at $6.3 billion. Yet as reported by Automotive News, GM CEO was not happy. GM cutbacks will quickly follow. That means laid off employees will follow too and it sounds crucial for them.

Yes I checked the procedure after I made that post. Seems like it is OK to take in.

Do not attempt to order the calibration number from GM Customer Care and Aftersales. The calibration numbers required for this service procedure are programmed into control modules via a Multiple Diagnostic Interface (MDI) or Tech 2 with the calibration update. When using a MDI or Tech 2 for reprogramming, ensure that it is updated with the latest software version. Use TIS2WEB on or after 11/22/11 to obtain the calibration. If you cannot access the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center and it will be provided.

For step-by-step programming instructions, please refer to SI and the Techline Information System (TIS) terminal.

1. Verify that there is a battery charge of 12 to 15 volts. The battery must be able to maintain a charge during programming. Only use an approved Midtronics® PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool EL-49642) or equivalent to maintain proper battery voltage during programming.

2. Reprogram the inflatable restraint and sensing diagnostic module (SDM). Refer to SI and Service Programming System (SPS) documentation for programming instructions, if required.

2.1 Connect the MDI or Tech 2 to the vehicle.

2.2 Select J2534 MDI or J2534 Tech 2 and Reprogram ECU from the Select Diagnostic Tool and Programming Process screen.

2.3 Select SDM Inflatable Restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module -- Programming from the Supported Controllers screen.

2.4 Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: The air bag indicator light may remain ON after the body control module (BCM), or inflatable restraint sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) is replaced, and during the programming procedure for the BCM until after the procedure is completed. When installing a new SDM, there may be several DTCs set prior to programming. Once programmed, these DTCs should be in history and can be cleared.

3. Ignition ON, using the scan tool, select the SDM Module Setup menu, then select Setup SDM. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.

4. Using the scan tool, select the SDM Module Setup menu, then select Setup SDM Primary Key in SDM. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.

5. Clear all diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).

I've had like four times the air bag light flash so rapidly the only way I could tell it happened was when in engineering mode it flashed on the Atari Gage ''AIR-BAG FAULT". At first I thought it was my imagination till I saw the message pop up. Hasn't done it though for couple months so I thought it was just a loose wire or something of the heat messing with the cars electronics.

... Whats 30 milliseconds anyways, ...?

Put it this way, 30 ms can be the difference between the bag being in the process of inflating or in the process of deflating when your face hits it. You want that thing fully inflated as quickly as possible so when your grill plants on it there is some give. If it still inflating it would be counterproductive. Usually 30ms is the total amount of time required from the sensor sending the deploy signal until the bag is in the process of deflating which is when you want to hit it. A 30ms delay would essentially take the bag twice as long. So I would guess that in a low speed collision, sitting all the way back, it wouldn't much matter. But at high speed with the occupant any where near the front it could be a very bad outcome.

This recall isn't my top priority, but it really does need to be done.

Just received my notice yesterday and made the dealer appointment for next week. They haven't see the car since I put the LTH/HFC or the 3.70 differential so hopefully they think it's cool and don't give me a hard time.

Took the car (2009 G8 GXP with six-CD Blaupunkt factory radio) to my local Cadillac dealership and they reprogrammed the airbags. One minor glitch, it changed the display on my radio from (a) details of the station and program to which the radio was tuned to (b) simply displaying the day, date and time. Pushing the top left button next to the radio (with the "clock" symbol) once got me back to the display ((a)) I preferred. Not sure this is described in the owner's manual.

Took mine in this morning to the dealer to have the recall performed and now I have an airbag light.

Took mine in this morning to the dealer to have the recall performed and now I have an airbag light.

Does anyone have the instructions for performing this recall? It's obvious it was not done correctly and I'd like to know what should have been done.

I'd like to have the info when I take it back in.

I'd be interested in this as well...the dealer response when I called about it was "Hhmmm. Interesting...first time we've had to do this recall."

Scary.

I'm pretty sure my G8 is the only G8 our town's dealership has seen. They don't get to work on it. It goes to Skillman's. almost 40 miles away.

Took mine in this morning to have the recall re-performed, which they took care of relatively quickly. So they send out the tech to explain what he did and he says "Did you know that if you play the radio on accessory for more than 10 minutes it sets a code?"

How exactly does this relate to the airbag? And why were you playing the radio while doing a software update?

I'm going to send another email to the dealer, and then find another dealer...

Unbelievable.

Had the recall done without issue after calling GM and getting them involved to have the caddy dealer perform the work.

Also had them look at a couple other issues. Have oil dye in the car for a potential rear main seal leak. If there is an issue this dealership can't do the work and would need to take it some where else. They wouldn't fix my broken wheel stud because of aftermarket wheels which is annoying because it came with summer only wheels/tires. What am I supposed to do in Chicago during the winter? One set of wheels/2 sets of tires is not cost effective.

I took my car in today for the recall and no lights but once I tried the bluetooth to make a call it would not work.

When I went through the Bluetooth menus it showed my phone there but still would not work. Got home erased the phone and reprogrammed it and now all is well.

Not sure if it was the phone or car. I tried my phone in the Tahoe and it worked normal in it without changing anything.

When I drive the cruze and don't reset the phone for a few days sometimes that'll happen. Or everything seems good then I make a call and no rx or tx. Kinda frustrating but you cant expect it to always be flawless.

Went to the dealer I purchased the G8 from, had oil / filter / lube done along with checks for door relays and weatherstripping just to get some notes in before I turn over 36k miles. BCM recall was performed along with all of this. Simply told them not to touch the ECM/TCM code and they said "no problem" - done and done and no drama. Work was done by Covert Buick GMC in Austin, TX. Friendly shop and work was performed in a prompt and professional manner.

As an aside, they were stunned that it took 9 quarts of oil. I simply shrugged and said "told ya so" :)

Do you happen to remember which service advisor you had? I had mine in last year for a door relay, and I was very happy with David Coredig (sp?). However, I haven't rolled in yet with the maggie. Doesn't sound like they gave you any crap about your mods, right?

I worked with Kevin. Mark is a great guy to work with, also. Covert is pretty good in general, they service Buick GMC and Cadillac so they don't mess around. No blowback about my mods at all, hell they love my car and tend to see a lot of modded rides anyway. I was just up front about it and they were perfectly fine with that. Tell 'em I sent ya.

I see you and I use the same tuning shop, small world. I hear you like your Maggie :)

Mine was done as part of an oil change / rotation / alleged inspection. I say alleged inspection because my battery stone cold died on me two weeks later. You'd think if they had actually inspected/tested the electrical system, "hey buddy, you have a weak battery," would have come up in the conversation.

I had mine flashed about a month ago. My airbag light came on while driving home so I went back to have them reflash it, but that didn't work. They were trying to get me to buy a new passenger airbag sensor, but I wasn't going for that. It turned out that there was some weird thing where the key was turned to the on position for more than 12 seconds and it caused to light to be on. After they took care of that I haven't had any problems.

The module definitely does not come out. It took my dealer less than a hour to reflash and investigate a door lock malfunction.

Small world - I used to live in Manchester. Did you go to Stan McNabb (if it's even still called that) in Tullahoma? That's where I used to take my Camaro.

yea I took it to Stan's, what did you think of the service dept there? I lived in MI unitl 06 I had better luck with the dealers there. So far the only thing Stan McNabb had done to my G8 is to change the oil & filter and tire rotation but they didn't reset the TPMS.

I wasn't that impressed. I took my Camaro in there under warranty for a leaking pinion seal in the rearend (a well-documented issue in F-bodies). They fixed it fine, I guess, but I repeatedly mentioned adding the limited-slip additive to the fluid both before I dropped it off and after I picked it up. They assured me that "they're a GM service department, so they do what GM calls for."

As soon as I pulled out of the dealership's lot, I could tell they didn't add it since it was whining/screaming. The service manager and I went around and around about it being "normal" until I finally had to go talk to Stan McNabb himself. After I finally took Stan for a ride and he agreed it wasn't normal, the service manager finally fixed it. When I got it back the second time, it was quiet as a mouse.

This was in either 2002 or 2003, so I'm not sure if they've changed or not, but based on what they told you, it seems not.

Yea the fuel door came off my G8 so I bought a new one and had it painted at Stan’s. the old one was bent up, came off in a car wash anyway I found that they got the color right but there is almost no metal flake in the paint. They can’t do a simple job, pretty bad..

Same here my G8 spends most of its time in the garage it has just 9,515 miles on the clock. GM keeps on sending out recalls on the airbag issue I just haven’t had time to take her in. plus others here have told me they had their car in where the dealer flashed the module the local dealer here wants to replace it by removing the seat. I’m picky about my car and don’t want these guys to mess up my car.

Glad to hear. I'm sitting on recalls too. The one and only time I brought my GXP in to replace the battery they wouldn't give me the original back . I'm anal I know but I kept the original oil and filter. Changed it myself No dealership oil changes not even when they were giving free changes. I even offered to pay to keep that original battery and they wouldn't let me. On top of that when I got it back from the battery change the air cleaner cover was all scratched. MY GXP will never be in a gm dealership again. NEVER !!!
