View Full Version : So, can someone explain how the GM Certified warranty thing works? Am I crazy?

So, I bought my 2009 GM Certified back in 2009 (November).
Entire shifter assembly went (not just the clip like I thought -- but the bearing, etc. all went).
Dealer claims the warranty expired June of 2011. That would have been the original in service date of the car in June 2008. So, doesn't the GM Certified add an extra 1 year/12,000 onto the car for bumper-to-bumper when you buy a car with the original warranty still on it? I mean, that is what the dealer told me when I bought it.
What would be the point of the warranty if that's NOT what it does?
So this entire shifter assembly thing is going to run me $200 or so the dealer said.

I don't think so, I bought mine certified as well, and the dealer said since it was purchased (new) in 8/09 it would be covered until 8/12, but I am at 29k miles :(

What the hell is the point of Certified, then? The dealer expressly told me that. I could have paid about 1.5K less for the car if they removed the Certified.

I thought it added the 1/12 onto the factory warrenty too. That sucks if it is not true.

What other reason would there be for the fucking warranty if that's not the case? I PM'd the GM customer assistant person who posts on the other board to check.

My fog light went out and my back door lock was messing up and the dealership fixed them both under my certified used warranty.

Your covered if it has been less than 12k miles or 12 months since you purchased it according to this GM certified page:

It appears that your GM Certified warranty expired in November of 2010. I had never given this too much thought, but unless your GM Certified is near the end or past the manufacturers warranty their is little or no value to GM Certified.

Oh. So based on this, GM-Certified hits the reset button on your existing B2B warranty and the 12K/12Mo starts right then this negating the rest of your B2B? So the GM certified works out better for the buyer if the car is nearing the end or past the end of the original B2B??
Is that how I am interpreting this?

It doesn't override the original bumper to bumper at all (which is why mine expired in June of 2011 -- the original in service date of the car was June of 2008 -- even though I bought it in November of 2009).

But if its still covered under the 3/36 B2B, certified ADDS 1/12 to it. I have it on mine--4 years from ORIGINAL in service to 48K miles.

So, good news.
I talked with the GM agent on the other board here and the dealer talked with GM, too. There was a miscommunication. The car IS covered still under the Certified Warranty.
The Certified will add an extra 1 year/12000 onto the bumper to bumper warranty as I thought.
Funny thing was that the GM agent wasn't even sure of the policy. The warranty site is retardedly vague. The wording is terrible.
