Speed Limiter

Ok, so there is a speed limiter on the stock programming. I read on another forum that it is 138mph. What is the reason for the limiter? I know there can be many reasons, but my question is more directed at aerodynamic stability.

Is the speed limiter due to the car not being safe/stable above 138mph?

Mostly road/tire capabilities. Not very often that GM puts any tire with a higher than W rating on their cars. I would think it would be because things tend to get a lot more expensive over that point.



There are a couple members who've been above 138MPH (and I mean ABOVE) and they've stated that the car still felt well planted and perfectly controllable.


As it is, at 110 I'll say that this car is a lot more planted than my 99 GTP was.

Thanks, I figured OEM tires might have something to do with it. This is my first car with a speed limiter. In the right circumstances and conditions, I'll run those speeds. I just wanted to make sure it was safe.

Holden (AKA GM) is also trying to play nice with worldwide regulators and politicians by enforcing a speed limiter.

Almost all of the serious super sedans, AMG/MB (C63) etc , BMW M3, M5 etc are sold in Europe and Asia (not sur about the US) with a 155 mph speed limiter.

Thus the combination of the crappier OEM tyres and the regulator "brown nose action" is probably the two key reasons for the limiters.

Not sure if there is the same limiter on the AU VE range. I had thought that previous limiters had been in the order of 160mph or so.

Not that it worries me any more. Mine's gone.

It depends on what tires came with the G8. The G8's with the 19" summer only, it's set around 137-140.

Im pretty sure the wheel/tire package doesn't make a difference as I have the 18s and it's limited at those same speeds.

It does make a difference, as the speed limiter won't be past the tires limit. You have the 18 summer only's?

No matter what tires your G8 came with the limiter is 137-138. It may pass that as it's still pulling before the fuel and timing is pulled but that's it.

Any tune house like Vector can basically set it to 200+ which for this car with bolt-ons is unobtainable.

Thanks, wife's GT has the 19s sad to read that the limiter set so low, my 95 IMP exceeds 140 and its a bigger car with less HP.

Just remove it with a tune or Superchips programmer.

Word is that 150+ comes fairly swiftly, but 150 to 160-165+ requires a bit more room.
