View Full Version : Very Strange 2-3 shift??

I know my tranny has been shifting very slowly ever since the dealer touched it but today leads me to believe something is really up. On the 2-3 shifts today, the car wouldn't shift. It was like the car went into neutral when it was supposed to shift for like 5 to 10 seconds!! I was reving the rpms would go up and down but the car wouldn't move like it was in neutral. After about 5 seconds the car would buck into 3rd gear. The slowest gear shifts I have ever experienced. What would be causing this? Mechanical or electronical? Can't go to the dealers because they all refuse to fix anything under warranty. I was doing this for about 20 minutes then just stopped and went back to it's regular slow shifting instead of it's neutral for 5 second shifting.

They can not refuse to work on it, but now with mods it can present some issues. You need to find a mod friendly dealer.

I'm sure if it happened to them they would have to look into it but it only did it for about 20 minutes then stopped. When-ever I bring it to the dealer, it behaves.

Has that car EVER been right? Perhaps time to look at the Lemon Laws?

It was fine right at the beginning. It's just the damn tranny is acting all bugged and the dealers don't do shit for me. I've tried countless times at 3 different dealers and no luck. I just wanna swap the whole tranny and im sure the problem will go away. Not gonna happen though :(

Actually, when I go to Kaltech for the retune, I'm gonna have Brian empty the tranny and completely refill it, N' check the fluid for metal shaving's etc. How much fluid are you supposed to put in this tranny when it's empty?

It should be in the manual, but I remember something about 12 or 13 quarts.
ETA:
12.4 quarts
@ $6 a quart.

So basically try for 12.5 quarts in the tranny. I'm willing to pay that if it fixes my problem. If it doesn't and I wasted that money, then....:bm:

Well, you won't get all of it out. The fluid in the TC will stay there unless you drain that also.
I don't think the fluid is your problem as long as it's filled to the correct level.

The tranny starts shifting MUCH better at around 55-70C and up. Anything below that, the shifts are TERRIBLE Would that mean Im low on fluid???

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment on a flare or harsh 2-3 shift.
Recommendation/Instructions:
This condition may be caused by leaking 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230 in SI document 1698360). The following conditions are indications that the fluid seal rings may be leaking:
• Delayed/extended or delayed with harsh feel initial Park to Drive and/or Reverse to Drive shifts, that are more likely to occur when the transmission temperature is below approximately 40 degree C (104 degree F).
• Harsh or flaring 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur when the transmission fluid temperature is in the approximately 0 degree C (32 degree F) to 40 degree C (104 degree F) temperature range, but can be present at any temperature.
• Harsh 2-3 shifts that are more likely to occur at less than 50% tp.
Vehicles built in the January through August, 2007 time frame are more likely to have leaking fluid seal rings
Important: When inspecting the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230) there probably will not be visible signs that the seal rings are damaged.
If any of the conditions above describe the flare/harsh 2-3 shift condition replace the 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230).
DO NOT replace the valve body, TCM or fluid pump cover assembly.
Important Note: The 1-2-3-4 and 3-5-R clutch fluid seal rings (230) must be properly oriented when they are installed. Incorrect installation could lead to fluid leakage and shift concerns. Refer to SI document 2178811 for installation directions.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

I'm gonna bother the dealer again about this. I can't take it. I had a mechanic drive my car and he said it could be caused by a number of things. He said it could be the torque converter, the tranny mount or the syncro gears if the car has that.

The manufacture date is on a silver color plate, under the hood next the stock air box. It shows a number of things, such as suspension, tranny and build date.

sent pontiac this. Hope this works
"To whom it may concern,
I purchased a 2008 Pontiac G8 GT back in the end of April of 2008. Everything on the car is fantastic and I absolutely love it. Back in November, I brought the car back to the dealer for some typical maintainence on the car like wheel alignment, balance and to check the transmission fluid because I heard of a bulletin that some of these cars came from the factory a bit low on transmission fluid so I thought Id have them check it. They mechanic working there tells me there was too much fluid in it and drains a significant amount. I later find out that he did it when the fluid was way too hot. He checked the fluid at about 90 degrees celcious when your supposed to check it at about 40 degrees, basically they drained too much fluid and the transmission wasn't acting right. I hear gears grinding, shifts were very harsh so i brought it back to them and they put back in the right amount of fluid realizing their mistake. Only problem now is I am still having problems with the transmission. Very harsh shifts with a big delay, grinding noises until the transmission fluids heats up very significantly and I have brought it back to the dealer several times, waited for hours each time for them to tell me nothing is wrong when I am very certain something is wrong. I had a mechanic drive the car who also agrees that there is something wrong with the car. I love this car and I just want the car to work the way its supposed to, the way it did before they drained the fluid. Car was never the same since. I have another appointment to go the dealer yet again this upcoming thursday, December 15th. The dealer is Mack Pontiac in Hicksville, Long Island, New York. If they again tell me nothing is wrong and refuse to fix my problem, what can I do? I really love this car and don't want this to ruin my experience with this car as well as Pontiac.
Thank you for your time,
Mario

When did you send this to them? Did you mean January 15th?
Man, it sucks to hear the problems you've gone through. Hopefully you can get this resolved. I just hope they don't try and screw you for any mods done to the car.

Just sent this now and holy shit im the biggest retard of all time. Yes i meant january 15th. I'm sure they'll realize that mistake. I hope at least. As for the mods, none of the mods have anything to do with the tranny so i can't imagine how they would be able to relate the tranny problems with the mods ive done. My car has a stock tune and it's been stock for a while. still tryin to make an appointment with Kaltech

Good luck, Mario. I really hope you get somewhere. If not, I would be looking toward the nearest 1/4 mile track. Beat the hell out of it until failure. Then have it towed to the dealer. Just make sure that you wipe any numbers off first :)

Quite interesting. I noticed this problem more after I got the computer updates. I just blew it off as normal, but it is quite irritating. Now that I have documentation on the problem, I'll be hitting up my dealer in the near future. I know when you give it good amount of throttle, the shift is smooth.

when i WOT it in sport mode with traction on, the entire car bucks so hard it feels like the wheels locked and the car shut down for a second before it shifts in it's 1st to 2nd. It's that dramatic!

wait, you know when you're in sport mode the tranny will hold gears if you're driving aggressive. like say you in sport and you WOT from 1st to 3rd and let off 3rd at like 3k rpm's the tranny will hold it there waiting for you to punch it again so it stays in the power band. sound familiar?
