I was given a PW Quad recenlty. Cleaned her up and painted it red for my boy. http://powerwheels.mendingshed.com/73249.pdf this is it. Last night I went to hook up a 12v tractor battery to it and it ran. The plug on the Quad is a 4 pin plug with a BLUE BLACK WHITE and YELLOW wires in it. So I hooked the battery up to the BLACK (ground) and YELLOW (power) pushed the pedal and it worked.
Well, this Quad has two switches Hi/Lo and F/R. Playing around, because it has a "hand brake" (somehow connected through the Blue wire) got a spark pushed the pedal and nothing. Placed the power accross the motor terminals and nothing on both motors.
I take it somehow I blew both the motors. I'm looking for replacments now, but can someone explain why the motors blew and not some switch or resistor before the motors?
If it helps any this was originally a 2 6v battery Quad. Here's a wiring diagram I found also http://forum.modifiedpowerwheels.com/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=3475 ... reason for not posting on that forum, I don't feel like joining another forum.
thanks in advance

OK, well I just had it running...
Then it started smoking!
Burnt wires by the battery. Went out bought a fuse and 12ga wire. Hooked her all back up and it worked again for another 5 minutes till it stopped. Checked it out and now the wires by the H/L switch started to melt, and possibly fried the switch...
Maybe the battery is too strong???

Are those things made for a standard 12v battery? I would think "wiring harness" would be made of to low a gauge of wire?

Yeah, and no... 6v,12v, 18v and 24v can be used as long as they are sealed, non standerd.
I found my answer (in first post-wireing) and it was wired wrong. Thats why it keeps burning. BUt did a little more reading and I'll be buying a NEW non-tractor sealed battery. That site re-iterates that non-sealed batts could explode and I don't need to ruin my boys jewels for a couple minutes of fun.

I used a Dry cell sealed battery in my kids escalade for the same reason of getting burned by any acid when I put a sound system in the truck. And I know some people didnt like the music playing but that's what was on the radio at the time i made this. Check it out here

My kid has the 12v Kawasaki quad pictured below. After 3 years the battery died. Man, the power wheels brand batteries are EXPENSIVE! New battery lasts for ever though. One of these days I want to do the 24v upgrade.

PW wheels are too much $$$
Buy Gruber batts like these http://www.ebay.com/itm/Modifiedpowerwheels-12V-18ah-battery-Power-Wheels-/200643098347?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb742b6eb
I just bought 3 6v to run his quad at 18v  Only cost $30 total plus shipping!

The 12v power wheels batt. cost something like $60. Luckily the place that sold it had a "special" on a 24 of Coors Original for $14.59, lol!
I'll have to check out that site for when I upgrade the toy. Son is demanding more speed.

Here's a new vid tonight of a 1995 Hot Wheels Lambo Countach we got from grandmas house. Originaly a 6 volt set up. So, easy power upgade for more speed. Bumped her up to run 12 volts, he said it was too fast :)

Well I got the new batteries and just got done rewireing the Quad. Anthony (my son) wasn't home till late, but I had to have him try it out.
The Video sucks, but his excitment makes this all worth while! I do a good lighted vid tomorrow after work.
