View Full Version : Freakin Tire Discounters put BRIGHT GREEN valve caps on my tires today

Just got back to work after going there to have a nail removed from one of my tires and I just noticed it. What the hell? Not only did they put it on the one they fixed, but all 4 tires. It looks ridiculous. I know its a minor thing and most people wouldn't even notice, but what they hell were they thinking? Now I get to swing back by there after work to get my old ones. I understand its probably something they do in conjunction with their "nitrogen inflation" BS, but come on...

Yes green = nitrogen definitely sucks

Nitrogen does NOT suck... You may not agree with it, but the results stand speak for themselves. I would agree that Nitrogen is more important for track use, due to the pressure variances you get with straight air from a compressor.
The dryer the air in the tire, the better. Nitrogen is MUCH MUCH dryer than straight air from a compressor.
The green caps blow...
I actually have a cylinder of Nitrogen in my garage that I use to fill my tires.

Yeah I dont really care what type of air they used, I just want the God awful neon green caps off of there. I'm sure the rice burners around here would love them...

LOL - that's what I get for not using punctuation :)
Nitrogen does not suck. It sucks that they have to use those ugly green caps to indicate that they used it.

I had those, took them off and replaced with black plastic ones. My tires have been changed and nitrogen doesn't carry over. For the $20 extra bucks it wasn't worth it. During the winter my pressures drop just the same as regular air. And are you going to take it back to a nitrogen place every time to get air in your tires.
It actually has more to do with the drier on the air system. The more moisture in the compressed air the more pressure is going to drop
Green is awesome.
I knew you'd show up here somewhere. I guess your can accent the green stripe with green valve stem caps

When I got my G8, the place I was working at built industrial air dryers and nitrogen "generators". I posted about it before as I was truly curious how much it kept tire pressures from fluctuating. I got it for free, and didn't even have to drive anywhere except around the building at lunch, and found it wasn't worth the screwing around. There was a little difference if you use straight air out of a compressor without any in-line dryer after it, but with one it was undetectable - a regular daily driver doesn't see enough temperature swing to justify it IMO. It'd be more beneficial though for race tires or high-load tires like semi trailers where there's more heat build-up, but even then unless I had it very easily accessible I wouldn't bother with the trouble.
And yeah, I didn't bother with the stupid green caps either.

Green caps are horrible but I've seen worse...

I've got the green caps and I am not a GREENIE I think they look cool and it seems to help regulate the pressure. They do drop just like air over night but get up to normal pressure fast.
My chevy store asked me if I wanted the green caps I said why not lets add some color to the chrome rims, lol

I bought a new car Dec. 30 2010 with nitrogen filled tires. 17k miles later, I have yet to add nitrogen to bring the pressure up.

I went to Nitrogen for my tires and there is very little change in PSI in hot or cold weather, and they don't build up to as high a 'hot' running temp either. Also, the low moisture content in nitrogen will give the TPMS longer life. They don't like moisture. Like Ray, my pressures stayed so constant that I've only had the nitrogen topped off during a tire rotation - approx 7500 miles. My shop uses a small green ring that slides over the valve stem threads and is mostly hidden under the valve stem cap.

Only problem with nitrogen is you have to go someplace to get serviced. If you want to drop your pressures for a few runs at the track, you can't just stop by the local 7-11 to re-service them. I personally like the convenience of air.
I got nitrogen in my tires.
78% Nitrogen, 20% Oxygen, 2% Other

Plus whatever moisture is in the air...
It's NOT the nitrogen that's the issue here. It's moisture.
Nitrogen is basically 99% dry in its industrial form. It's the moisture we're worried about here. Even the best dryers at auto shops can't get it that dry.
I have a cylinder in my garage for my wife's car. I top them up from time to time.

It's also why most tire places (the ones I use) have an air dryer on their compressor and that gets enough. I may switch if I get a place to store a cylinder but I'm not going to pay 20 bucks for that gas in 4 tires. 20 bucks pays for the gas in a big cylinder and after that it's all profit for the person giving it out.

They make some MONEY on that too... Nitrogen is the cheapest gas we sell. A cylinder like I have which could fill a ton of tires, probably costs about 15 bucks to fill. I just take it. Only real perk of being an owner... lol
Chris
I got nitrogen put in my new tires and have noticed the pressure doesn't change much at all anymore. Seems to work pretty good and it was free (well, part of the install charge).
