I felt that my g8 (2009) was always on the warm side as far as cooling. Finally asked the dealer to check it. Was low on freon. I'm afraid that there is a leak. Are there common known causes?

Dealer should have checked for leaks while charging.

I charge every 2 to 3 years.

Been a little over 2 years and on hot days, it takes a few minutes to cool but after that, its ice cold.

Thrown A/C belt is common too

We are experiencing temps of 104. takes a few minutes but AC gets pretty cold. Check your cabin air filter. Just changed mine, but once a year is too long. More like evey 6 months.

I threw my ac belt three times this week :/. While putting it back on I realized that the tensioner had a chunk missing... Gonna cost mr about 170 for a new one and a belt...

I bought my G8 with 47k miles. Drove it 3k and the AC compressor went out at 50. I was pretty upset, never saw it coming. No thrown belts or anything

For about the same money you can get the fix kit. Only negative is the wait time of about 8-10 days for it to arrive by Airfreight.

Will this new tensioner get in the way of the blower (magnacharger)?

It's not a new tensioner.
It's an entire new A/C bracket which has not only a new A/C tensioner on it but a new idler pulley also.
You never had an idler pulley in there before.

This blue bracket (A/C mounting bracket) and your old tensioner goes.

And gets replaced with this (New A/C belt throwing fix).

Go have a look if there are any Magnacharger bits anywhere near your existing A/C bracket.

Driving "home" from "Mexico" last week, was challenged by a new 2011 Shelby. I noticed that it got warm (AC cutout) at WOT. I really did not notice it until about 150mph, although it probably cut out earlier.

I throw my belt all the time. I now have a breaker bar and 15 socket in the trunk and a pair of gloves to handle if car is hot. I need to break down and just buy the new kit.

Todd I think the A/C cut out to give you more power to make killing easier. Just a thought.

It is best to run your A/C all the time until winter comes for you all up north and if you get a nice day in the winter put it on to keep everything working proper.

My Colorado has 386,000 miles on it and still the same unit even though it was a weak unit from day one is what the dealer said but works and gets cold.

My A/C has been working real good with 98,000 miles but we will see after it has been torn out twice in a month becasue of the engine problem.

Threw my a/c belt again last night. Don't know how much it can take lol. Belt is pretty eaten up right now. With my tensioner broken, I was able to put the belt on without even using a 15mm socket....I'm quite sure you should not be able to push that bitch down with just two fingers! Hurry up parts!!!

How easy is the install?

todds87ss
07-19-2012, 06:28 AM
not too bad. there is a thread here somewhere for the install. Some folks pull the bumper. I did not. you do have to get up under the AC to access a bolt or two. Using ratcheting wrenches, I was able to get to the tough ones. the compressor remains connected, just unbolted.

My compressor started making a bad clicking noise around 46k, I got it replaced under my GM certified warranty

Is there a common place where the leak(s) develop?
