In looking at wheels it seems like no one makes a 19" x 10" wheel with the correct offset that will fit the G8. It seems like 40mm is as much as the wheel companies go. I estimate that for a 10" wide rim you would probably need around 50-55mm offset to keep from having to roll the fender. I don't want to roll the fender. How bad of an idea would it be to replace the wheel studs with longer studs and put a spacer between the rim and hub? Will that be a significant safety issue or would it work?

BMW has this option on a few models. As long as they are not the elcheapos it should be fine. I know the correct wheels are available. Most are not just sitting on the shelf and have to be ordered.

What body style? M series?

I could be wrong but I THINK adding a spacer will decrease the offset number-it will move the wheel centerline closer to the fender lip. Offset is the distance from the mounting surface of the car hub to the centerline of the wheel.

Correct. Offset is thickness of hub center, backspacing is distance from hub center to inner edge.

Well, it would appear that the obvious has officially whipped my ass. Thanks for correcting me before I got too far gone.

I think what you might want to look for is a wheel with a very small offset, but a big back space and a wheel adapter like this:

That would make an "off the shelf" set of wheels work.

Or like Charlie said, get custom.

How much are custom wheels and who makes them?

It's A G8!

Here is a wheel that is close on size and offset but I'm not too crazy about the style.

Some of the wheel suppliers like VQ Motoring can mill off up to 3 mm of the wheel hub to increase the offset number (decrease the offset). I am installing a set of 9.5 Beyern Multi's on rear with a 45 offset. My tires will be nearly 12" section width - The 285 x35x19 Bridgestone 050A's are wider than most 285's. Dealing with a bent front 8.5"(40 0ffset) wheel so VQ is replacing, as it was shipped to me that way. Once on car, will post pix....

There appears to be almost 2 inches of clearance on the inside before you hit the strut. Going out, you are limited to a bit more than an inch. Stock wheels are 48 offset. Go to a wheel offset calculator website.

Good Luck!

So...

19x10.5" rim would need to have a 60 to 65mm offset to theoretically fit.

and no DRs to be had. Why not go 18 or 20?

WIDE 19s are for the street.

Some 315s under the beast would make me very happy in my pants.

17s are for the strip.

What he said. I can get a set of 18s to have when I need them. My car will see the track some but not a lot. Wide tire will look good and help with traction some.

When looking for wide rear tires, check out tread and section width as all brands are not equal in the same size. There are also height and width variations in the same tire model relative to the numbers. For instance, if you check out our 050A's, you will note that there is very little height difference between 285 & 275 35x19, but the 285's are much wider, and are wider than the normal difference between 285 & 275. The other issue is that you need relatively similar diameters to keep the traction control happy. Not exactly sure at what point front and rears can spin at different speeds and activate the system. Consequently, a 305 or 315 width might need to be a 30 or 25 aspect ratio depending on rim diameter. MAIN REASON FOR WIDE REARS IS FLUFF! Thats why I'm getting them anyway.....

Wreck is right about DR's.
