so my little brother bought me a license plate holder with an led screen in it that scrolls messages...awesome part is it comes with a remote so you can change what it says on the fly. need to know how to wire it...it has 3 wires coming out of. red, black, and grey. red is power, black is ground, grey is??? also what do you think the easiest place to hook these up would be? license plate lights? how do i get to the wiring for that area. please help.

Grey is usually the Active wire, meaning: Red-power Black-ground Grey- switch. It came with no directions? The grey wire could be an antenna also if it is wireless.

for you it should read, "I like buttsecs." :p

Grey would probably go to the controller, unless it's wireless.

Gray is probably the on trigger OR its got a dimmer in it (my guess).

I would think it could be one of two things all of which have been mentioned already...

-Remote turn on
-Antenna for a provided remote control

I'm about 50/50 on which it would be but Im starting to lean more torwards the antenna, especially if the remote has an on/off button you can press.

I bet that's right, just an antenna.

found the instructions folded up in a 2 inch square inside the packaging last night...woke up this morning and they were gone...i know its not an antenna because the remote is IR, meaning i'll need an IR repeater to use it whilst in the car...said something about grey wire going to the brake light or some other source of power...fuckin forget. help please

Im kinda surprised that they made the remote IR. You would have to be in front of the thing to use it then. Anyways, I would think that if you were to have to hook it up to the break lights than it would be a remote wire that would only allow it to turn on when your foot is on the breaks. Maybe a safety feature??? I am pretty sure they wouldnt make the grey wire the constant power wire.

When the brakes are pressed it works, or put an on/off switch. Since the battery is in the trunk, just hook the red and black there.

I want one of these for the left lane zombies on the cell phones. I could finally tell them exactly how I feel :)

What a great present, congrats.

what if i want it on all the time...or just when the running lights are on...i.e. at night.

IR repeater will take care of not being infront of it.

Found this for ya, hope it helps:

The unit runs on 12VDC

The unit wires into your break light power

Pressing you brake begins to scroll your message and will continue to scroll as long as you are pressing the brake pedal

Kinda what I figured after he said the remote was IR...

I have seen these a few times and that is exactly how they work
