Not sure if this is the right section, but....

I'm picking up a Certified Used 2008 GT in San Antonio later this week. One of the "demands" I made was a new key since the one they had was literally coming apart from having so much heavy shit hanging on it in the ignition.

They agreed and ordered one, but said they can't actually "cut" the key and that it has to be done at the factory.

Is this BS or what?

Find a local lock smith, Dealers around us were saying the same and a member posted this for us WNY'ers

A little FYI for us G8 owners regarding key replacement. If you need a key cut for your G8 or for any "sidecut" key, go to Lockmaster locksmith on Southwestern Blvd. in Orchard Park. Near St. John Vianney's church.

Talk to Paul. No frills, no BS. $35/key cut. He carries the blanks and remote sections for G8'S, Camaro's, Equinox's, etc. I found out they were the ones cutting keys for Jim Ball and other dealerships. So these dealers that were telling us, "well your key has to come from Australia because nobody here does them" was a bunch of BS. If you get a key blank from the internet, he'll gladly cut it.

That would be because of the immobilizer, but you probally already found this out if you have 4 blanks >_>. You need a genuine key, and then you can get it cut where-ever providing you have a spare. If it's vin-specific like German car's are, you also have to get it activated using some software, which might have to be done @ the DLR.

Yeah the dealer can't cut them but they are able to order them already cut and programed for your VIN. I am sure someone will post of some more detail on how all of this is done.

yes the keys on ebay are genuine keys but they dont work , the dealer has to order the key with your vin and then you can mate it to your car. The key has to be cut from gm

There is a post on here somewhere on programming your key yourself...

The following procedure is for
programming additional keys only.
If all vehicle keys are lost or no
longer work, see your dealer/retailer.
A new key must be made prior to
programming.
A maximum of four keys can be
programmed for the vehicle.

The key is purchased as two
sections: the key blade and
immobilizer section (A) and the
remote keyless entry and remote
start system section (B).
Do not join the two key sections
until programming is complete.
To program a new section (A):
1. Insert the original, already
programmed key into the
ignition and start the engine.
If the engine does not start,
see your dealer/retailer.
2. Remove the key from the ignition.
3. Insert and turn the new
section (A) to ON/RUN within
five seconds of removing
the original key.
4. Turn the new section (A) to
LOCK/OFF. Section (A) is
now programmed.
To program a new section (B):
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN with
the new section (A).
The vehicle must be in P (Park).
2. Select Remote Key from
the personalization menu.
3. Select Program.
4. Press Q and W on the new
section (B), at the same time,
until you hear two beeps.
5. Repeat Step 4 for all other keys,
including keys that require
programming or ones previously
programmed to the vehicle.
Any key not reprogrammed will
be erased.
6. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.
7. Join sections (A) and (B)
until they click.
Do not join the two key sections
until programming is complete.
Do not leave the key or device that
disarms or deactivates the theft
deterrent system in the vehicle.

Thats the thing: they're saying they can't order them already cut, nor can they do the cutting.

Crap! You could launch an ICBM faster than that process. Guess they put a "chip" behind your ear as well. :secret:LOL

FWIW, they can be ordered cut. Mine was ordered this way, but when it arrived it did not work. The dealer ordered a second blank key, then sent me to a locksmith to have it cut and I was done. The locksmith direct charged the dealership.

When I worked at a dealer, we got a bulletin stating the factory can cut the key with just the vin number. Another possibilty is if the dealer has the proprer cutting machine (not many do-cost over 5 grand about a year ago).

FYI:
I got mine ordered pre-cut from the dealer just a few weeks ago. Took about 4 days for them to get it. I gave them the key code that came with the car keys when I bought it, and 2 days later they called me for the VIN. They had just switched to the new GM software and put in the key code but the order was cancelled so they put it back in with the VIN and got my key in 4 days.

Now they're telling me that it is actually pre-cut, so we'll see what actually shows up. If they weren't practically repainting the entire car, I would have walked a long time ago. Buying this car has been a painful process to say the least.

The manager actually cut the salesman out of the loop after he decided to call me and complain that I'm too picky about the car, LOL.

I know, right? Apparently I'm too picky... See my intro thread for the rundown on the fiasco that has been trying to buy this car.

When you get it, it will not work until you follow the KEY programming instructions. Easy to do though, it's in the manual. I think you put working key in ignition, turn to on position, turn off and remove, within 10 seconds insert new cut key and turn on. Done and programmed.

Dealer just replaced my flip-key about a month ago under warranty because the buttons were worn all the way through. It took them about 5 weeks to get it in though.

Thanks for this. The key arrived today and it took all of two minutes to get it working. I still can't believe they charge $50 for that shit. Assholes.
