Has anyone seriously investigated swapping out the current trans for another type?

Maybe a 4L70E?!? Not sure how much work needs to be done, the TCM and the wiring could be troublesome. But man, one can buy a fully built bulletproof 4L70E a lot cheaper than a 6l80e or a tremec.

I think boost patrol was going to swap it out.

I was thinking something cheap, maybe a glide?

I have seen on the Australian ls1 forum some guys are using a turbo 400. but I have not research on how they did it.

Best trans for the swap is a 4L80 which is basically a TH400 with an overdrive. Not cheap, but you can make over 1000rwhp and they'll take it...plus you can cruise across the country with them. A 6L90 is junk. A 4L60 is junk. A 700R4 is junk. None of them are reliable above 600rwhp. Not for long anyway.

I'll never cruise across country, or any where. What about a Glide?

Do you think you can get that heavy a car down the strip with only one gear change? A Powerglide would be a poor choice.

Maybe. That's why I'm asking.

a powerglide would be probly be about the worst option for one of these cars they dont make enough tq and the are about 1500 2000 lbs to heavy.

I think it has plenty torque but the weight might be too much.

4L80 would be the best option. It will take 1000rwhp with no problem

Might be best to call and pick their brains... Emails never seem to get the same results as a one on one phone call

If it gets to the point where I actually need to move on it I will, just getting ideas now.

Don't buy a beefed up 6L80. That's like trying to beef up a 10 bolt rear end. They're just don't have the capacity to hold any really BIG power. You need lots of gears or lots of stall because unlike a positive displacement blower, a procharger needs fairly high rpm before it starts making any boost. A powerglide would be an absolute slug with a heavy car with no low rpm torque.

Yea, wasn't planning on another 6L80 if I can find an affordable alternative. Anyone know a shop within a couple states of me that could handle a 4L80 swap into this thing?

I know RPM was the first to put an automatic in a Z06, i'm sure they could figure something out for you... http://www.raceprovenmotorsports.net/

That conversion costs about $25,000 !!!! Tom doesn't want to spend that kind of money. When his 6L80e breaks he
just wants to put in a reliable trans.
I would go with a 4L80 or a turbo 400 if it was mostly a track car. He already has the gear needed, a 3.70

well installing the trans is easy, just figuring out how to get it to shift is the hard part, i'm sure someplace like megasquirt makes something... quick google search, something to look into... http://www.msgpio.com/manuals/mshift/index.html

id go th400 and a 4.11 gear amd 3600 stall to start that sould be a good starting place. no ur g8 doesnt make enough tq to make a power glide a good option in a heavy car. you would need at least 1200 ft tq to make a 4k plus car work with a power glide a th400 is your best bang fo the buck if you dont mind losing your over drive.
rember a big reason why these cars move as well as they do is the HUGE first gearing lose that lose alot or 60ft

I am looking at a 4L80 if my trans takes a pooper.... I got a quote of $9500 for the complete coversion including new driveshaft, super beefed up 4L80 with transbrake, new converter, install, programming and whatever computer crap they would need, wiring, etc,......
I agree the 4L80 is the only option for us to go that will be beefy and live!!! trans brake option will be awesome and take our cars to new levels on the track....
Seems like alot.... but considering just removing and installing and then shipping and time wasted, it runs a thousand for that.... then rebuilds cost a bunch.... driveshaft + converter is bunch....
so overall it looks like a good option for peace of mind and bad ass car......

Is there really no reason not to do a 6L90 switch or beef up a 6L80E? my goals are no where near the 800-1000 HP a 4L could handle, nor the drag-strip only duty. and it would be on occasional long-distance trips, so I'd want the extra gear for the gas mileage. A 6L90E would be easy and much cheaper by comparison.

I have no idea about the computer and it looking for a TCM taht isn't there anymore. Maybe start with the GXP 6M ECM.
A cross member is fairly straightforward. The drive-shaft will need to be custom made. Maybe read a bit at the Oz boards to see what they did with swapping a different trans into a auto VE.
Of course, you realize the next step is converting the IRS to SRA...

With an '08 you can't just swap in a GXP PCM since the harness is different.
The guy on the other board that switched to a manual in a non 2009.5 car had to leave the TCM plugged into the harness out of the trans to get the car to even run.
Just an FYI

Its only that much in the corvette bc so much work is needed. ALOT of the parts are custom. In a car where the trans is in the front its WAY less expensive.
