Yes the day has come where I need some info on painting. I just received my FasterProms intake and TB and I am thinking of painting the intake RED. That way when I do the coils it should look pretty sharp under the hood. The question is how do you do it so it looks factory and never peels/flakes etc. I really do appreciate any info I can get.

Honestly I don't think it will look good.

I didn't want to be the 1st to say that. I'm going to have my fuel rail powder coated red. Until we have a custom one.

Charlie is honest when I have what he thinks is a bad idea so.... I think it'll be too much red. Coils and rails would be cool, intake itself, too much.

I have seen it done on Vettes and it looks as good as the paint on the car. Its just figuring out how that was done. Then with the fuel rails etc it will look real good.

i think if the car wasn't red the fuel rails would look better, but i just don't like how they look against the red

Yeah... When adding color to an engine bay, it needs to be done in small purposeful amounts. I guess I'd say put up a picture and have someone with photoshop make it red so we can see it. TSS could probably help you out with that.

Really I just need to know what paints and primers as well as prep it will take. As far as how it will look, lets just say I always amaze people!

The pictures I have seen were of "smoothed" intakes. They sanded them smooth before painting.

There are additives that are added to the paint and primer to help it adhere to the plastic.

It's been 20 years since I worked ina body shop, so I can't give you any clues.

Find a local shop and ask questions.

Charlie,
You need adhesion promoter to get the primer to adhere to the plastic surface. Degrease the intake 1st, then use the adhesion promoter. Then you can paint it in all it's hideous glory.
:D

Looks like there's no talking Charlie out if this.
Personally I would take a more aesthetically
pleasing feng shui approach to decorate the
engine compartment.

Charlie, do you have a visual example of what you have in mind?

GRRRR8
12-22-2008, 05:57 AM
Bascially the LT4 had a red intake. I will make the intake look like it has seperate runners. Tape off in between each runner, then shoot it red, then clear it. The idea is to make it appear aluminum because of texture. I have a plastic 3800 intake that is similiar in design that I will practice on, if I can find the damn thing!

Sorry for the confusion but, are you referring to the actual intake or the tubing for the CAI? I think you are talking about the intake.

GRRRR8

Yes the actual intake the throttle body bolts to.

My brother was being a pain in the ass this morning so I couldn't get all the details from him.
He said prep was very important. You'll need an adhesion promoter, good primer and a urethane paint. Cleaning the intake was extremely important.

Here is a right up on LS1.com. It's a pretty good step by step.

Charlie, prep, prep, prep etc...
I have airbrushed a couple of intakes, flames etc. this is what I have done.
get some good prep solvent, degreaser and a lots of sand paper, 150-600 grit.
the crevices will be the worst. once you have it as smooth as you want, apply the adhesion promoter separate from the primer, 2-3 coats of primer. Prep again. Clean. Color coat. Light scuff for Clear to stick. Clear. Wet sand
I do not condone this sort of behavior. Keep in mind, I am a whore, and do whatever someone wants me to do to their car for the right amount of money. Good luck.

Charlie,

Dropped my fuel rail off at the powder coater today. It's getting coated Torch Red. They had the headers from the Army Top Fuel dragster there.
Cost was $35
I'll be getting them back early next week.
