View Full Version : Shifter not in PARK = No start!

Went to work today.

Backed in my spot as usual.

Set parking brake and put the transmission up in PARK. Usually this is where my doors all unlock (how I have it set). I had to manually unlock my drivers door to get out. Didn't think of it then as I was in a hurry. Thought there might have been a glitch.

Get all finished work and tried to remote start it while walking up to the car....NO GO with that! (not unusual, as the remote start is kind of glitchy)

So I unlocked it, got in, inserted key, turn it....NOTHING. No click, nothing. Radio is on, HVAC is on, headlights only slightly dim when trying to crank.

So I pop both the hood and trunk and wiggle EVERY battery terminal and connector I can see (it's dark). Still....NO CRANK.

I think back to shutting it off, and wonder if it really isn't in PARK. Cant move shifter OUT of PARK, even with key in and turned. (which is weird) I play with the shifter, wiggling it, pushing if forward, side to side, pushing the button. NOTHING works.

Then I do the walk of shame.....back into work to ask a buddy for a jump start. Figure, if that doesn't do it, I'll get a ride home and leave it there.

Go to hook up cables, and get a pretty good spark on my negative engine compartment post. Get in, and try to start it, and it starts up like there was nothing wrong with it !?!

While driving home, I notice that while I'm in DRIVE, I can push the shifter forward (it seems loose) and next to the shifter shows N, and I'm still in drive. Something is screwy with the shifter. I didn't want to fiddle with it until I got home.

There is definitely a detent missing between P-R-N-D, push it up to PARK, and it still reads REVERSE! Push it harder, and it eventually goes into PARK and the door locks open.

So, this was my problem. You obviously cant start the car without it being in PARK, but you cant move the shifter if it isn't started!

Long story short, make SURE your in PARK or you'll be stranded.

I still don't know what the jump start did to allow it to start though? Maybe being in "LIMBO" for 8 hours drained the battery a little??? I don't know.

The car was in for the rear main seal replacement a few days ago, and was probably only started 8 times since getting it back from that. Wonder if something in the shifter mechanism was knocked out of whack when they did that?

Sounds like your trans linkage got loose - I had similar issues to the point of where it fell out!

Wow! Reading up on the blog. Sounds EXACTLY like what mine is doing.

Think it's related to the rear main seal job? I'm thinking they slide the tranny back to do this rather than remove the engine.

Possibly - either way I'd take a peek under there one way or another to see if it's worked it's way loose

7:30AM Monday morning, I'm pulling up to the dealer. I cant take the chance of it coming off.

Not the case. You can move the shifter out of park, into D, R or anything else while the engine is not started. Just got to have the key in the ignition in the ON position with power going to it.

The dealer probably broke the little white plastic clip that holds the linkage together.

Put a wire tie around it for a temporary fix.....we did this when mine fell off at the track.
Or go to a auto parts store and buy a box of c-clips and put one on the linkage.

That SHOULD be the case, but not for me. Shifter trigger was locked, couldn't push it in, and that prevented me from moving it out if what should have been PARK, but was really limbo between P & R.

I'm not crawling under there. Car is parked until tomorrow morning. As long as it goes into DRIVE, I'll get there!

You can also start in neutral.... Do it all the time

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I do it too. Rolling down the road and want to check some stuff in Engineering mode. Shift to neutral, turn key off, restart back into engineering mode, and then shift back into D while still rolling down the road.

I'm sure you can. Last night I could not.

Best way to duplicate this would be to find this "Limbo" area in between R and PARK, then shut off the car. Let it sit for 8 hours, and try to start it.

Whatever it was, however it happened, I was unable to squeeze the shifter trigger and/or move the shifter at all. In ANY key position.

Maybe leaving it in "Limbo" like this drained the battery? All I know is that a jump start fixed the issue and allowed me to get home even though the shifter detents and ranges are all loose and sloppy.

Think it went into some sort of theft mode?

At dealer now. SM comes to waiting room..."Mr. McCauley, would you mind coming out to your car as our mechanic is having trouble duplicating your issue?".

It's running and he tells me to pull it out of PARK and show him..... I grab the shifter and the trigger won't squeeze! Can't move the shifter at all! I look at the dash, and it says it's in R !!! Mechanic mumbles a bunch of things saying that there is no way this could be happening, there has to be something wrong with the internal shifter! I simply said, put it up on the lift and check it out please!

I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to duplicate it! Guess were all guilty until proven innocent!?!?

Well sumbitch!!!! Chalk one up for the good guys!!! About time I see where someone has a problem, takes it to get it fixed, and CAN actually duplicate the issue again thus removing all doubts that said person is just a whack-job. hahaha. I have seen the look of desperation in peoples face who come to me to fix their car only to realize they cannot duplicate the issue. It sucks.
