View Full Version : New Console Lid + Install Guide

I purchased a leather wrapped center console lid from http://www.RedLineGoods.com about a month ago. I finally got around to installing it! Happy with the result, leather is nice and tight. It also matches the seats.

I decided to put together an installation guide for the lid, in case anyone else would like to do the same modification.

I believe they will be listing the product on their website, not sure what pricing will be.

Anyhow, guide below & attached.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Tools Needed:
Phillips Screwdriver

Time Needed:
10 Minutes

Instructions:
1) Open console lid (Figure 1)
2) Unscrew 6 screws circled in red (Figure 2)
3) Separate console lid from backing plate, tabs circled in red (Figure 3)
4) Connect new leather wrapped lid to backing plate
5) Begin to screw in leather wrapped lid; the lid will “click” into the tabs.
6) Finished! (Figure 4)

Very nice! When I went to the website and clicked Pontiac there's no products for the G8. Where did you find it there and how much was it?

Thanks for the write-up! I see this is now on the site for $49 + $9 S&H.

CntryClub007, how is the standard padding/comfort compared to stock? I see that there is an option to upgrade to 6/8" or 1 1/8" extra padding. I wouldn't mind a bit more padding/height, but I don't want too much bulk.

Do they use a factory armrest and recover that or do they fab up a new plastic backing that the padding and leather are then attached to? Do you have a pic of the underside of it?

If you don't care about sliding, this looks like a great alternative to the Holden armrest. I'm trying to decide if I want a two tone cover, or black with red stripes maybe.

FYI, I ordered one of these on 2/16, got the following shipping notice on the 2/21:

"Your order is in the mail and it shouldn`t be long before it arrives. Thank you for your business.

We ship from the European Union via priority mail. It should arrive within 6-10 business days from the day of dispatchment. It`s a very good shipping method but there is NO TRACKING NUMBER.

Please be on the lookout for a WHITE PADDED A4 (slightly bigger than LETTER)ENVELOPE.

Due to some countries` import limitations on certain goods, such as "animal-related products", which is not specified but it may or may not include leather (decision`s up to the officer who processes them), we mark all our packages with the following information:

"SYNTHETIC LEATHER PRODUCT SAMPLE."

Stating that it is synthetic leather allows to evade the import limitation described above. The product IS genuine, top grade Italian leather though - as you will know immediately after opening the package (by smell, if nothing else)."
------------
I had no idea that this was shipping from the EU until I got this notice. I will post an update/pics when it arrives and answer any questions.

I went to my local trim shop and they did a padded cover for my existing console that cost me $85. in red/black which is close to the original interior color but not quite on the money. If I didn't know the color was different I don't think I would realize it. The padding makes a big difference when you are on a long trip for sure.

My cover came this week and got it installed. As you can see it is a cover only, without backing. It is sized to fit directly over the rubberized stock cover. I suppose if you order upgraded padding, you'd get a slightly upsized cover to accommodate the additional thickness and the new foam would go in between the leather cover and the stock rubber.

The quality of the leather is very good. The color and grain match better than the picture suggests - matches the seats. The fit is pretty good. It could be a bit snugger, but it doesn't slide around. I could probably figure out a way to fix this if i wanted to take the console lid back off and mess with it, but I think it's fine as it is. Note that the install instructions note the clips will snap back in as you tighten the screws. That didn't happen on mine. I think the elastic on the new cover is in the way. The console release/latch is a bit more difficult to operate, but may get better as the leather breaks in a bit in that area. Overall I am happy with the upgrade for the price!

I received mine this week, black w/ silver stitching and 3/4" padding. The quality is good but I've had trouble getting the padding to look right without bulging on the sides or leaving a hallow. I will be getting some different foam to try. The seams along the top are narrower than the base so the foam has to be angled. I've tried with and without the stock cover and even with other foam I have. It doesn't look bad, just not how I want it. Removing the lid is the easiest way to do it so I"ll add pics in case anyone is wondering how. I have mine just sitting on there for now so I don't have to pry the tabs again. As was stated, the elastic may interfere with the screws and tabs so I have left mine on the outside, for now anyway. Flash doesn't help much with what it really looks like. As it sits, padding is on top of stock rubber cover.

When I first tried to install the cover over the factory lid using their foam I had a tough time trying to make the cover look adequate with the foam they supplied, so I ended up going to an upholstery shop and purchased the proper foam (according to them) and affixed the foam to the bracket with Super 77 and then cut it the exact size of the bracket. I then sprayed the edges of the foam with Super 77 and slipped the leather cover on, it was not easy since the adhesive was clinging to the leather quicker than I imagined which made getting seam straight quite a challenge.

Got mine in yesterday. Went with the Voilety Blue for the top and Black for the sides. The color is a bit dark but I wanted a darker blue so it works for me. The finish is excellent. Its very nicely put together. The fit is a bit off. 10 minutes to install is optimistic. It took me well over an hour to do this. I ended up using a spray adhesive to keep it in place, but I still couldn't get the sides to stay tight. I only got 2 of the clips to click back into place. The others won't fit cause the leather prevents the sides of the panel from setting back into place. I had to cut small slits to even allow the clips to click back in. It's a tight fit but it worked in the end. I might end up taking it to have it professionally installed but for now it will work.

That looks pretty cool! I figured medium blue would be a real close match. I did the blue suede, since I plan to do the seats black on the side and blue suede centers so I don't slide around at all. The Alcantara is a nice material and smells good. Feels like real suede, but I can see this holding up better. The color is close to the car too. I will get some pics up here before too long.

To me it looks like Burgundy matches the red of the shifter the best. I didn't show the red next to the shifter because it is a brighter red than the perforated red is. The black matches the seats the best. It has the same texture. The Charcoal isn't dark enough and the perforated black is too dark. This is my opinion through my colorblind eyes, so I could be way off. If anyone wants to see any of the other colors offered, let me know.

I did black with burgundy stripes. It's in option 2 right above the piping option. It's two, it looks like 1/2" strips of the burgundy leather on the top sides with mostly black. I thought the two tone option might be too much of the burgundy

Got mine installed last night. I really like it. Fit is not perfect(but its close and for $65--awesome), but looks very good and is much better than the stock looking rubber lid. Took some time to get it stretched tight enough and it is much easier to take the whole assembly out of the car to get it installed.
Black with black stripes and black stitching and no additional padding installed over the stock padding and rubber lid.

received mine today; foam will be an issue as with Irish. Note that the thread and the material may not be an exact match. I got black/burgundy stitching, and the stitching is really burgundy, not more red looking like the leather sample...so it's what I ordered, just not what I hoped for exactly...going to try to find a similar padding to the one shown and run with it...but the mismatch color bugs me..

When you guys installed yours, did you tuck it under the arm rest then put the plastic part on top of that to help hold it? This is how I have done mine and it looks OK but still has some loose spots that I think I will end up re-attaching via spray adhesive.

Looking for some other ideas to get a better/smoother look!

Thanks!

Mine is tucked under the plastic. I pulled it tight and used a few staples to hold it tight. Then screwed it back onto the plastic part. Looks smooth and tight.

176891769017691Just installed Redline armrest cover. Plain black, matches rest of interior well. I stretched it over the stock rubber lid. I just left the elastic band exposed on the underside of the lid. It's not that big of a deal to me. It's not perfect but looks a lot better than the crappy stock rubber lid. An excellent, inexpensive mod.
