View Full Version : P0633 theft deterent error on Replaced ECM? car wont crank!!

Car is ready to start-up but due to a P0633 code it wont crank at all... the tuner says it is related to a P0633 code which is something to do with the Theft-deterent system......
history:
Car is ready to be started up for the first time since the engine replace..... I got a new ECM due to Livernois locking the other one and it not working... I purchased the ECM from the GM dealer and they said they downloaded the latest program and that it was all set... then I trailered the car to the tuner who installed the procharger, modified the tune, and now its ready to start, but it wont....
he thinks it has something to do with something the GM dealer forgot to do relative to the new ECM and theft system??? linking of the two?..... make sense?
if it is something to do with this... is there a way to get this fixed without the dealer needing the car at their shop?...... any thoughts or help would be awesome!!!!
thanks

There's something called a 'security relearn'. Not sure how but bet that's it.

Try this:
Turn the ignition to the ON position and leave it like that for 10 mins.
Turn it to off for 5 seconds.
then back to ON for 10 mins
then off for 5 seconds
do that 3 times.

I'm pretty sure wrecks right, I had to do it when I put a new ECM from intense when i did the turbos, check my install thread might be in there. But I do remember it was a pain in the ass

Here's the GM method:
2009 Pontiac G8 | G8 Service Manual | Document ID: 1825684
Immobilizer System Component Programming
10-Minute Immobilizer Relearn
This 10-minute relearn procedure will relearn the prerelease password and the challenge/response data between the theft deterrent module (TDM) and the engine control module (ECM).
1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle in the pass-thru arrangement.
2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
3. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
4. On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions, using the Pass-Thru method. Ensure the correct programming selection is chosen based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn, ECM, or PK3 Replaced selection.
5. At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
Important:
• The scan tool will initially display 12 Minutes. The first 2 minutes allow the scan tool to initialize the appropriate control module. The remaining 10 minutes is the relearn timer.
• On some vehicles the security indicator may be illuminated for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
6. Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
7. Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
8. With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM and ECM have now relearned the pre-release password and the challenge/response data.
9. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

Yes it is the security relearn as long as everything is plugged in and hooked up correctly.

Stupid question but ....Did the dealer put the correct vin in the ECM ?? For some reason it sounds like the modules
are communicated with each other.

I still think its the security relearn thing. I dunno if that backyard procedure actually works though.

It does, I did it on my car. Post 71 in my aps TT Install thread has a link to how I did it. It's a bitch and it has to be exact. If I remember right I made sure every thing was off and reached through the drivers side window to make sure nothing else electrical happens on the car

We did it exactly like your posting..... but still no go... may try again...
but what does the phrase in the instruction mean "the procedure will not learn the immobilzer prerelease password or the challenge/response data".... how does it get to do those things?... anything special have to be done?..... hmmmmm

do you know is there a way to check with HP tuners if the VIN number was put in correctly????.... or do I need a dealer to do that?.... my dealer seems to not be able to do anything with the ECM alone... they need it in the car.....
I wonder if I can get a loaner or something from someone like Vector to see if it is a ECM issue or some other wiring issue.... I will call them in the morning... trying to move the car back to the dealer is a real pita....

I know from Remote Start installations that usually that key will show up if you manage to get the vehicle to crank without the chipped key in the cylinder. Usually the car would crank over and maybe even start, but then die when the ECM? realizes that they correct chipped key isn't in range of the key cylinder. I know you didn't change keys or cylinders, but changing the ECM may have something to do with it. Chances are you'd need to reprogram the keys to the ECM/BCM before it would respond.

It's because the unit is completely blank more than likely. Like I said ship it up here with your VIN I'll program it and send it back.

No luck yet.... tried a bunch more things but nothing.... starter clicks but doesnt rotate and the fuel system relays dont go on...... so like others have said... it is something with the ECM and/other modules causing the issue..... I am hoping Chris White can set me up.... Hoping to drop off ECM on Wed to Chris but not sure if he will be around to get it from me.... hopefully!!! Everything is done and ready to be kicked off tracks... :)

Chris, it was received at your address on Wed morning. It looks like you work on Sat/sun. I hope you can get too it this weekend. If you are too busy or will not be able to get to it... please let me know ASAP so I can come pick it up at your address ASAP.... I know you are quite busy so if you cannot get to it due to backlog, etc... I just need to know so I can make other plans.. My issue is I need to get this resolved so I can clear room at tuner asap. Thanks for your help on this... let me know when you expect to have it ready and if I can pick up at romeo plank (ups) or what.... but thanks again!!!!

I dont know if I will ever find out.... I dropped ECM off to Chris's Address on Wed after he said ship it to him... I emailed his webiste 2-3 times asking to talk to him, and also PM'd him on this site... but no response at all..... dont even know if he got the ECM.....
its not like it wasnt clear that I was in a hurry to get this ECM fixed.... but who know when I will get contacted.... maybe today hopefully.... but since I didnt hear from him on Wed/thurs/ fri/ sat.... I went ahead and had to buy another ECM from Vector cause I just cant wait anylonger.... I somehow believed that it would be a quick turnaround.. but I guess I was wrong..
hopefully I hear from him soon..... I am guessing he is out of the country and not checking emails otherwise I am sure I would have heard from him by now..
Sucks! :-(

Just as I was VERY clear to tell you to SHIP it in not DROP IT OFF. We are ONLY open on the weekends (just like the website says) so if you had SHIPPED it like I requested it would have ended up here Thursday or Friday when I normally pick up the orders. I sure didn't expect to see this, especially in light of doing you a favor for free.
At any rate I'm looking at it right now....

Shows it was programmed 12-27-10 however its odd that the MEC is already decremented to zero, the counter starts at 255 and each key on it decrements by one.... I highly doubt that you've turned the key on and off 255 times since you put it in correct? If so this ECM was likely used and returned before you got it, it also shows it HASN'T learned an immobilizer code yet so thats definitely the source of the issue. I'm going to flash it and see if it'll take an IMMO learn request.
EDIT: Yup its got a PO633 TD Key not programmed...

Ok it took the stock programming and the IMMO learn request so in a perfect world it should start on the first try when you put it in now. Also you didn't leave a return address (another reason I really needed it shipped) so if you can get that to me soon it'll be out tomorrow.

Chris,
Thanks so much!!! Sorry I was so impatient and I didnt notice in the beginning that you were only open on the weekend... it is clear now that I look at it, so it was completely my fault!! Sorry for me being so excited about this for not being clear... I am just so upset about this car thing now that i guess I was trying to do anything to get it done and not being clear about it...
Thanks so much for looking at it.... I am in the area today... can I pick it up and pay you for you time and trouble...... let me know!!!!

... Update!?
The car is now running... slow startup so far and trying to get idle right with tune.... oil pressure sensor went bad and replaced it, oil drip from dip stick connection... fixed....
Probably have idle set in a day or two... much different than it used to be... with the Procharger F1d there is so much air being expelled out the blowoff that it sounds like a huge air leak from a 4" pressurized hose when it is at idle.... and the cam is pretty aggressive so it really sounds bad now.... I guess the good thing is at a light, no one is going to try to run me.... they are going to be like "wtf"..... there is no mistaken that there is some serious air flow and supercharger whine.... even at idle.... after idle gets good then it might take a couple days on the dyno to get ready to run....... the air flows are off the map.....literally....
anyway it is looking good and now just a matter of time..... I guess no big deal cause I couldnt drive it in all the snow anyway ... :) I will try to get a video of idle and dyno in the next couple days or so....

UPDATE:... Car started now.... It ended up being the ECM like chris and you guys said.... Chris sent me my ECM after he modified it, but I ended up getting another one from Vector a couple days before so I tried that one and it worked!! I am sure the one chris did also will work now and I will probably save that one if something ever happens to my new one... Thanks to Vector motorsports and Chris for their help!!

It is going slow....... by using the 80 lb injectors it doesnt tune as quickly as with lower ones... this limit on the injector size for our cars set at 64? lbs... forces us to scale everything differently which causes much more work on the tune... thus it is taking along time... and the air flow going thru this thing is not normal... :).... and this is taking more time to get it right....
the tuner I am working with also only has a couple hrs a night to work on it so it might be till end of next week or mid the following week before the dyno runs happen.... but it is coming along.... I guess I am in no real hurry due to the heavy snow out here... cant drive it anyway.... not sure how a 900+ hp car will drive in the snow.... :)
