Since AFM is apparently both mechanical and electrical, how much difference is there in turning it off in the tune and doing the full hardware removal of it? I'm assuming the electrical part involves a solenoid which actuates the mechanical part?

Well for 1 there will be no more drone. It does not make the lifters any better as far as sound or strength. I feel that if you are going to push these cars go ahead and put a small cam and LS7 lifters as well as DOD delete. That way you are ready for a blower/turbo/NOS. Not to mention the fact thatonce DOD is gone, cam swaps are VERY fast because you dont have to remove the heads/intake.

would you not still need to remove the Intake so you can remove the lifters?

You won't have to remove them, just "hold" them up. I've been told you can do it with magnets.

16 magnets or there is a trick tool now that holds them up also.

If you are changing the lifters the heads have to come off, the lifters are under the intake port area of the cylinder heads.

For the amount of time it take to pull off the manifold, I would sooner just take the extra 15 min. But thats just me.

not if it only required spinning the cam a couple of times (after removing the timing chain) to get the lifters up, then just sliding the cam out. VERY easy. All of the extra stuff (JHP tool, pen magnets, etc) is added insurance. I have done 3 cams using the spin and hope method. Pulling the intake does not get you there. The valley pan has to be removed and other stuff.
It is amazing to see a cam come out of an engine with the entire fuel system intact. Anyone needing the JHP install tool, I have the homemade version. It will ensure the non-dod lifters stay up.

Tom, If I'm doing AFM delete, it would include a cam change. As long as the hardware is there, I'm going to use it.
