Just curious as to whether or not anyone had any issue with belt slip when they dropped pully to a 3.1 or lower , i know its been discussed a litte here and there but i want to know if people are acutally having a issue. I know the gto had belt slip issue and it seems like thats what most where basing there info on, just want to know if any of the g8s are having a issue because im gonna drop my tvs on in a couple of weeks and want to know if i needed to order additional parts

I had belt slip with the 3.1, so I added a GTO idler pulley and GTO length belt to fix it. Smaller than 3.1, it might be a good idea to look into maybe either 1:1 ratio rear pulleys or a 8 rib front setup (the rear 1:1 being the cheapest option)

but, maybe you should install your blower and let me know :)

hmmm. how much for the GTO idler pulley/belt and 1:1 Ratio rear? Wonder how much power I would pick up from the 3.2

I just used a shorter Gator Back belt and it doesn't slip with the 3.1 or if it is I cant detect it. No belt dust on pulley.

I brain-farted the G8 1900 is 1:1 on the back. so scratch that...
You should call Mike @ haddads... .he ran a 3.0 on his car and then upped it to the 3.1 due to slippage...

The belt slippage would only be at the higher RPMs, generally the exhaust and blower noise will drown out any belt squeal... so the only real way to see/know of slippage is with datalogging or on a dyno.

We are going to have a similar setup. I have 1C now, have 1900 sitting on shelf waiting to go in with a 3.0 pulley. What are you running for headers and exhaust?

It's A G8!

So what about this GTO idler pulley. Where can we get one and do you have any pics. Thanks

You can buy it directly from Magnacharger. Just call Jessica.

Better yet... I'll give you the part number...
it is a 60mm flat w/o flange Ford pulley # XS7G-6M250-BA
You also should use this belt K061010 (its 1.5 inches shorter than the one we sent with the stock kit)

Or you can call me...cause I wouldn't want to have to call FORD either.

Or just go to the parts store?

This is the one I went with for my pre-bolt (early) 1900 pulley setup: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/GTR-4061020/
I believe it is .5 in shorter than the one that came with the maggie.

WickedMom

the kit does come with the 102.5" belt... but the best 'non-slip' belt with the 3.1 pulley is the 101" (when used with the GTO idler)

norm8332
12-14-2010, 03:17 PM
So it's 101" with the GTO idler. Mine without the added idler worked with 102". 101 would be too short for me.

Just FYI, since you have the oldest style TVS with the keyed front pulley -- you can not just change your rear pulleys (like with the newer style TVS & piece pulleys)
Also, there may be a variation in your belt routing... so I would suggest ignoring most of this thread for now.

Mine without the GTO idler as she said. Just direct replacement with the shorter gatorback, but I haven't looked into the GTO pulley myself.

the 60mm idler just helps with belt wrap

What do you have to do? pull the maggie?

WickedMom

Yea, if you have a keyed pulley on the front, then your rear pulleys are pressed on. So the blower/manifold assembly needs to be sent to Magnuson to have the pulleys pressed off and pressed back on. We can upgrade the hubs to accept the two piece pulleys (current style) but at a cost of about $950.00

Get the GOODYEAR EPD series belt. IT is similiar to teh Gatorback, but when it gets hot it shrinks a bit instead of stretching like most belts. I had the belt slip issue on my 05 Impala SS with no pulley change and switched belts and it was gone. Dropped to a 3.1 and a little shorter EPD and was still good to go.

Too tight of a belt isn't good either... Probably a little hit and miss with sizing if you go with a shrinking belt vs what we know will work

It doesn't shrink that much, but it doesn't stretch is the key thing.

Does your front pulley have 4 bolts holding it on or 1?
4 bolts is the two piece pulley which is the newer one.

We sell the regular gates belts... Any belt will work.

Ford sells the idler or you can call me and I can hook you up with both.
Then you would have the same thing I have on my car. Except I'm running a 3.1

FYI with the 102" belt I have, the tensioner is close to bottomed so I cant see a 101" fitting on the stock one-piece pulley setup unless the tensioner has changed.

Maybe I'm lucky, but with a 2.9 front and the stock rears I've been OK in the belt slip department.

Just FYI there is nothing Screwy on the Magnacharger or any of the TVS setups! They are 'lobes' on a roots style blower... :)

SO i didnt change the idler pulley because since when does a smaller idler pulley stop belt slip? smaller belt and the big pulley on the tvs seems like a better setup than smaller belt and smaller pulley.

I guess I need to see if I may have slippage. At the ECS last November a GTO guy looked at my pulley and said I may have belt slip, but I never had wiped it off for a while and thought it was just dust. I can datalog but don't have a wideband, can I still tell is its slipping datalogging without the wideband?

I have almost 18k miles on my Maggie and looking to change the belt. I run a 3.0" pulley on my TVS1900 and like the idea of going to a 102" belt (0.5" smaller than original). Not sure if it is due to slippage but I do get quite a bit of dust build up on my maggie pulley. Is there any difference between the Dayco Poly-V belt (5061020) and the Gatorback belt (4061020)? Seems like the ribs on the Dayco belt would actualy fit the grooves of the pulley and grip better (also the p/n Magnacharger calls out in Install guide) but I am probably missing something here.

All I can say is that I haven't had any problems with the shorter Gatorback. Never noticed any slip. My stock belt would slip sometimes, some others didn't have an issue. The black dust doesn't take long to appear if your slipping. Few hard runs.

I'm using the Dayco 5061020 with a 3.1 pulley. Magnason uses the same belt at 102.5" (pn 5061025)
