I have been looking for an aftermarket flexplate that I can replace my current production version. I have read that TCI and SFI both have flexplates for our cars but this is the response I got from TCI tech support.... and now I am confused...
At this time I do not offer a flex plate for the 6L80E.
When responding to this E-mail please click reply.
Thank you

Might want to check with Thompson Automotive (http://thomsonautomotive.com/home.cfm?content=ads.cfm) They build stuff for GM Performance. I called them once for a LSA flexplate for a TH-400

Charlie said SFI has only 1 available in the thread that G8gt594 posted.

Yeah what is the deal with this. I keep hearing two different stories. One says that people are using a TCI part # in the G8 GT and another says that TCI doesn't offer anything.

The only ones that I have a listing on from TCI are for the LS to older transmissions. Nothing for an LS specific trans.

Yep, the issue I see here is that people are making statements/assumptions without knowing 100% if it is accurate. I talked to TCI and they said they don't offer something that will work with the 6L80E transmission either. I don't know where people are coming up with the info that they indeed offer something that works with it yet. Maybe another part # they offer does work and they just aren't aware of it. I have seen this happen with other companies before. If that is the case then I wonder which part # it may be.

I don't see why the Cat Flex-plate would not work. They are the LS bolt pattern and have the ~.500 offset. The look more like the OE F-Body ones, but all the measurements seem to be equal. Very affordable as well.

I assume they are the same crank bolt pattern?? Are all LS cranks the same............

I ended up getting the CSR Flexplate.... CSR 200 AL-LS (alum chevy LS 168 tooth).... SFI rated .... beautiful piece.... I tried a cheaper brand but it was so far out of being flat, I returned it.... this one ran about $300....

Greg from FTI will be doing a pickup of my converter in Tucson. Great customer service. He sais he has an sfi aluminum one in stock if I needed one. But I do not know the brand or price yet.
Bank account under destruction. Sounds like me. I started getting some banging sound at idle. When up in the air at my exhaust guy it was coming straight from the inside of the inspection cover. So it is either the torque converter, flex plate, or a combo of both. In either case Greg is going to inspect and rebuild if necessary the FTI converter.

Greg actually has the csr aluminum one in stock.
Question though.
Would your quarter mile times be slower with a lighter flex plate?
When you hit it off the line a heavier flex plate has more energy stored in it and you will get a quicker sixty foot time.
After that period the lighter flex plate will rev quicker. When it shifts though the heavier flex plate will propel you faster because again of more stored energy.
And so on and so forth with the lighter flex plate being able to rev quicker.
So will a lighter flex plate slow you down in the quarter mile>

The weight isn't significant. IMO

I wouldn't expect a difference.

I agree the weight is verry insignificant..... to us guys it wont matter...... maybe to a 7 second car or something like that, but not us..... :)

We have 2 options for SFI flexplates, a stamped steel one and our custom billet aluminum. We teamed up with Reactor plates to make our billet bad boy one. It is a very very nice piece. The steel one is the same as the Hughes version, a good bang for the buck. But they are massed produced, so not as perfect and a CNC one. Here are the links to them....
Steel - http://www.circledspecialties.com/p-79-ls-sfi-flex-plate.aspx
Aluminum - http://www.circledspecialties.com/p-89-ls-al-sfi-flexplate.aspx
And here is a chart I did a while back comparing various flexplate from other manufactures...
Not wanting to bad mouth the CSR plate, it is a great looking piece. But I did find it was a little short on the height so it would probably require shims for proper converter spacing.

Well if you call a $300 repair good then I am set. The mechanic took out the starter, inspection plate, and noticed all the bolts were backing out from the torque converter on the flex plate. He cleaned everything up and used locktite on the bolts. Thanks to Greg at FTI. I would fully recommend FTI just on their great customer service!

I still have problems! Now a code p0741! That has to do with the converter. I can clear it. But it comes back within fifteen minutes or so. When it comes back on the transmission wants to not go past fourth gear. That is the partial lockup gear. It will. But it will take going at least sixty miles per hour. When the code is not on the car runs great.
So I think it is either the converter clutches, a solenoid, low fluid or a blockage to the converter. What do you think considering you are not physically inspecting the car?
Maybe this helps:
DTC P0741 or P0742
Diagnostic Instructions
Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicleprior to using this diagnostic procedure.
Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.
DTC Descriptor
DTC P0741
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) - Stuck Off
DTC P0742
Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) - Stuck On
Circuit/System Description
The torque converter clutch (TCC) pressure control (PC) solenoid is part of the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly and is not serviced separately. The shift solenoid (SS) 1 supplies transmission fluid to the TCC PC solenoid when commanded OFF. The TCC PC solenoid regulates transmission fluid through the TCC regulator valve in the lower valve body and the TCC control valve in the pump, to the TCC when commanded ON and exhausts fluid when commanded OFF. When the TCC is applied, the engine is coupled directly to the transmission.
Conditions for Running the DTC
No DTCs P0716 or P0717.
No DTCs P0722 or P0723.
No DTCs P2762, P2763, or P2764.
No DTCs P0741 or P0742.
The engine run time is greater than 5 seconds.
The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) is 20-130°C (68-266°F).
The calculated throttle position is between 8-90 percent.
The engine torque is greater than 50 Nm (36 lb. ft).
The 2nd gear ratio is between 1.42-1.63.
The 4th gear ratio is between 1.06-1.23.
The 5th gear is between 0.79-0.90.
The 6th gear is between 0.62-0.71.
The TCC is commanded ON and the pulse width modulation (PWM) duty cycle is greater than 60% for 5 seconds.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P0741
The TCM detects TCC slip greater than 125 RPM for 5 seconds when the TCC is commanded ON. This must occur 4 times.
P0742
The TCM detects the TCC slip between -20 and 40 RPM for 4 seconds when the TCC is commanded OFF. This must occur 3 times.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P0741 and P0742 are Type B DTCs.
Inhibit high gear in Hot Mode.
The TCM inhibits TCC.
The TCM freezes transmission adaptive functions.
Conditions for Clearing the DIC/DTC
DTCs P0741 and P0742 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids
When attempting to set transmission performance DTCs, observe the Freeze Frame and Failure Records to assist in duplicating the failure conditions. Ensure the transmission fluid level is correct and there are no leaks.
