I've just put a CAI on my '08 G8 GT, as far as I know there's no leaks, no codes , MAS re hooked, neg. cable disconnected 2 hours everything. My combination MPG before the install was between 18.6 MPG and 19.3 MPG, now it has droped to 15.6 MPG. The car is/was bone stock running 93 octane and no tune. How long does it normally take the computer to re learn? Maybe I'm just impatient; saying this because it's only been about 65 miles since the install with same driving habits and same daily driving routes, is this way too soon to see any improvement, shouldn't the MPG at least have stayed the same? The car runs fine, nothing really different other than better throttle response, and no I've not heavy footed it any more than normal and still got 18-19 MPG then. Has this happened to anyone else and if so did it finally get back to normal or get better, how long did it take. Thanks for any help or insight.

What type of intake are you using? I got better MPG after installing mine

It will take a few hundred miles for the computer to adjust to the added airflow. If you reset the fuel mileage in the DIC it's possible that you did more highway driving when it indicated you were getting 18+ mpg. I get 15 mpg with a CAI and a tune so it does sound about right though.

You must drive with a heavy foot. I average around 20 and get up to 26 on the highway and I have a cam and more bolt-ons. I averaged 21 with bolt-ons and tune.

Yes I do drive with a heavy foot, if I was worried about gas mileage I would have bought the V6. Besides I do 99% city driving so that's why my mileage is lower.

Most people who put on a new intake generally press on the pedal a little harder to hear/feel the change. There isn't a good way to check gas consumption using combined. Too many factors involved.

a v6 or a prius. I only check the mpg if I am on a trip

I put my Roto-Fab and Corsa Cat Backs on and it took a good 500 miles before the computer figured out what was done to the car and after that my car came to life and at first the mileage dropped and after it went over what I was getting 25-29 running 75. Give her time and a few miles.

Additionally, if your car isn't tuned to 93....no sense in using it.

Mine took about 100 miles to adjust. Set aeroforce interceptor guage to MPG and on the same road in same direction with cruise control at 50mph went from 30mpg to 34 mpg. Then at 70mph went from 28mpg to 30.5 mpg. According to aeroforce interceptor reading intake air temp, the readings were within 1 degree of ambient on a same temp day as the original with stock intake. This may be higher than some because i went from Mobil 1 to Amsoil which picked up a MPG from base line.

From my personal experience I have never seen a significant credible bump in MPG from any modification over the stock. Of course this is almost impossible to accurately measure unless your in a lab under controlled testing. The only thing I have noticed is when I put the stock tune back on to get some warranty work done, I lost a good 2-3mpg during a few day trip.

Thought I'd add my two cents. I've gone from stock to a Volant CAI and finally the stock airbox with a Wix filter and HSRK. I would put the order of performace as 1. Volant 2. Wix filter w/ HSRK 3. Stock. When I had the Volant on, I noticed that little adjustments in throttle would make the EPS in engineering jump around quite a bit. This made it hard to stay in AFM when going down the highway which might adversely affect your mileage. (I've tinkered with the AFM in engineering mode quite a bit and noticed that our cars will stay in AFM till about 25.8%, but will not go back into AFM mode until the throttle drops below 20%). The other thing that happened when the Volant system was on my car is that I hit the rev limiter during the 1-2 shift, which has never happened with any of my other setups. This setup clearly made more power up top, but also seemed to confuse the car somewhat. Maybe the computer would learn to adjustment with some more miles on it? I don't know because I took the Volant off because of a "fit" issue. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Volant fits great, you just have to snap it down hard. Plus it works very well with the Superchips 93 octane Volant CAI tune. You should really look into the Superchips tuner, I really like mine. You can also run 91 or 87 octane too if you're concerned about the price of gas.
