Charlie,
I've got an '05 accord that has been experiencing extremely loud road noise lately. just hit the 100k mark. it's a low-mid frequency wobble sound, seems to be coming from the fronts. Just put on 4 new tires and had the dealership do new pads and resurface the rotors but the sound hasn't dissapated any.
Any thoughts? Googling this problem seems to point me to some type of suspension problem, but I have no idea where to start. I'm planning on getting an alignment done but there is very little issue there so i'm betting it won't solve anything. Someone also mentioned that a toe-in/out can be the problem but it's pretty darn loud, in fact loud enough to be heard over the radio at mid volume.
Thanks

You have bad hub bearings. Very common around a 100k.

Agreed! Replace the bearings and say bye bye to the noise! :)

Does the noise get worse with speed or turning?

Might as well do the CV joints while your at it. If they haven't been done they probably need replacing. The rubber boots go bad and the dirt gets the joints.

That's what I was thinking...new half shafts with the new bearings. I did have a Caddie years ago that started a noise in the front. Turned out to be the tranny (Damn FWD!!!).

The noise is constant and increases with speed. turning or straight makes no difference.

Hub bearings. They should be able to put it on a lift and spin the frt tires and hear the noise.

Might want to check your control arms as well.

Charlie,
So i had the car checked out and it is indeed the hub bearing. Right now he can only see the right one being bad. However he said that with these types of noises it's always difficult to pin it to one thing, so he advised to fix the right side and retest to see if that gets rid of all the noise.
His estimate for both sides (if necessary) was around 750. This includes the testing they did which involved putting mikes all over the car and driving it around and such. I think that was around 75 bucks, so the parts and labor for 2 hub bearing/assemblies is around 650. Is this reasonable? It's primarily a mercedes/bmw shop so i know it's probably a little more expensive. I just want to make sure i'm not getting completely hosed.
Thanks!

Usually 275-300 per side so thats about right. Using a chasis ear for a hub bearing noise......hmmmm. Sounds like a way to get some more $$ out of a customer.

well i was complaining about a couple of other noises and dings from under the dash/enginer compartment, so that's probably my fault. he did advise to do one side first since he couldn't see anything on the left side, so i'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's not a crook:).
Thanks for the help!

No problem. I guess I have just been doing it so long I know whats wrong with cars 90% of the time and pass as much of a savings on when I can.
