View Full Version : Magnaflow axle-back review

I have the 1-7/8" ARH system that goes back to the axle-back. I was trying to decide between Magnaflow, Powerflo, Solo, or Doug Thorley. The solo was going to be too loud. There was not enough reviews of the Doug Thorley. Reviews of the Powerflo were good, very little drone, but cost too much for an axle-back. The Magnaflow is said to drone, but sounds great. I found a great price for the Magnaflow, so I thought I would do the washer mod with the stock GT mufflers to see how bad the drone was and to see if I would be able to handle the Magnaflows. It didn't drone on the highway and only had a little drone when idling. I ordered the Magnaflow and installed it yesterday. It drones bad like everyone says in the 1500-1800 rpm range. I'm going to run it to see if it gets better like everyone says, but right now it makes things rattle inside the car and I hate when things rattle in the car. I bought these thinking I would add j-pipes if it was unbearable. Time will tell. I didn't tell the wife that I put the axle-back on and she is going to drive it tonight. I'll update if she says anything. She didn't notice a difference when I added the headers, so I'm interested to see if she notices this. She hasn't drove it with the washer mod either. My 9 yo likes the way it sounds.
So, if you have a LT header system and want more sound for little to no money, do the washer mod.

I have ARH 1 3/4 to Magnaflow also. Feel pretty much the same way. My girlfriend says she gets a headache from the drone. I have a set of J pipes sitting in my closet in case i want to kill the drone. Right now, i have a set of dynomax super turbos on there which drone less, but are not as loud overall, which i kinda miss.

How long did you run your magnaflows? Did the drone get better over time?

im not sure, i got these used.
but ive had magnaflows on before that were pretty much brand new, and i do remember them being worse.
so i do think that they get a touch better, but not really. i also now have a full size spare in the back.

Update:
Wife said she was kind of embarassed to drive the car because of the way it sounded. She said it doesn't sound like a luxury car anymore, it sounds like an old car struggling to run and everything rattles.
I ordered j-pipe and will update after I get them put on as this has been the only thing that seems to work.

Dan checkout the thread that Patrick G started about adding a magnaflow in the trans tunnel to elimante drone. Let me look for the link. Unable to do on my iPod. Magnaflow 12468 is the part #

Fuck. This is starting to piss me off. First, I hear that Solo axle back sound like shit paired with long tubes a and hi flow cats. Now I hear the Magnaflows have their own issues. I had Magnaflows on my Mustang and drone was zero, but that was the old 2V. The clips I have heard of both these systems sound good, but nobody ever mentions if they have headers.

Think you're mistaken. The Solos don't sound like shit, they're just LOUD as shit when paired with headers and high flow cats. That's straight pipes all the way to the rear bumper man!

Loud at startup and driving, or both? Do they sound like that one Goat that had open headers? That was unbearably loud.

I forgot about that being another option but I didn't want to cut up my ARH system. I wanted to try cutting my axle-back first. Thanks though.

I'll have a new set of Solo axle-backs by this weekend and also have a set of GXP mufflers in my basement. Let me know if you want to test those out on your set up. I'm considering ARH down the road so this would be educational for me too. My Magnaflow axle-back that will be coming off is broken in with about 10k on it and I still have drone although the vibration has gotten better (I don't have headers).

That is what is nice about Patricks set-up - you don't have to cut your ARH system.

Exactly what I was looking for. I like the Solos, but I think they may be too loud for my taste. The Magnaflows sound bad ass. They really sound bad on yours?

They sound good, they just drone when you get around 1500-1800 rpm. City driving you aren't in that range for long, so it isn't too bad. It's mostly when you get on the highway between 60-75 mph. It's loud and things rattle inside.

What did you mean by struggling to run?

Those were my wifes words. That's how she described how it sounded to her. It doesn't struggle at all, especially when I'm driving.

You can't tell the j-pipes are there from behind.

First drive impressions are good. It still has the "Magnaflow" sound (the good sound). The drone is almost completely gone (might need to lengthen the jpipes a little). It's weird, you can kind of hear drone, but it sounds like it is behind the car and not inside the car. The wife should approve now. The downside was on the highway when dod kicked in. It vibrates really bad in 4 cylinder mode, kind of freaked me out when it kicked in, nothing the tune can't take care of. V8 mode on the highway was great, no drone. I decided to try this instead of the magnaflow mid-muffler fix because this seemed to be the cheaper route.

I'm impressed! Thanks for trying that mod. Just goes to show you don't have to get rid of your favorite axlebacks because you don't want to put up with their drone anymore. Looks good.
