My A/C belt came off and was stuck so I cut it and its getting fixed tomorrow-while I was watching the engine running as I noticed my belt came off,the center(large) pulley was wobbling with about 1/8 to 3/16 travel.all the other pulleys seemed almost perfect by comparison.

Is this normal? what do you think needs to be done?

They will address it at the dealer tomorrow, but I would appreciate a heads up so when they call with a diagnosis,I will have an idea if its BS or not.

Thanks for any professional advice guys! Cliff

The large pulley on the crank should run true, if it doesn't it needs to be replaced.

thats easy,I just wonder why the hell it would do that and hope its only the pulley itself!

The pulley mounts to the harmonic balancer which has rubber inside to dampen vibration and sometimes it gets out of wack, so that causes the assembly not to spin true. So it's not the pulley that's bad, it's the harmonic balancer that is bad.

It's possible the harmonic balancer wasn't made to the strict dimensional tolerances required and thru useage has developed movement relative to the crank.
It's also possible that the harmonic balancer was fitted slightly off square to the crank and was never fully seated properly from day one.
Another is that the crankshaft bolt has worked loose.....maybe combined with something above.

My AC belt popped off so the dealer ordered a new one and it hasn't come off yet and it's been over a year now.

You want to get this replaced. Long term it can cause damage from excessive vibration.

Yup.525 bucks and its not covered under powertrain anymore.no pulleys or tensioners are covered now.gm used to,but ofcourse not anymore.yay.gonna do it today amd bite the bullet.

I would question that, the harmonic balancer should be covered by the powertrain warranty.
Since I dont have access to dealerworld any longer, see if you can find out what the labor op would be IF it was covered.

edit: I did a google search for 'harmonic balancer gm labor op' and came up with a few other stories of balancers being denied coverage but ultimately getting covered.
IT IS COVERED. call pontiac if you need to.

They say that gm used to but does not any longer...

the only powertrain warranties that changed were for 2010 and forward... and even that only included the front hub bearings and the fuel pump getting excluded.

I say push the matter and it will get covered.

So I called Pontiac as WickedMom said, and they told me it should be covered and will call my dealer. They never got back to the dealer with an answer and called my phone that had died due to a dead battery.I show up at the dealer and had to call Pontiac back but the lady I spoke with was busy and the other tart wouldnt help me.So I walked over to the svc guys and said I have to wait for a call back...He was like,"no you dont.If GM wants to play this game,I will play too".

No charge for the work!!! Dealer said that this is not how you treat a customer and will "good will" the work if GM ultimately wont cover it.

I LOVE Babylon ARNOLD BUICK CHEVY GMC !!!!!!
Thanks wickedMom,I owe you one! you let me know when you wanna cash it in! I never would have bothered...

Why not just buy yourself a Powerbond underdrive balancer/pulley?

One and done, then you don't have to keep going back to the dealer...

will that fix the problem? because so far 4 pullys have not. I dont wanna spend any money untill i know this can be straight

I would be concerned that you got 4 bad pulleys in a row even though the part has a reputation for comming apart. Not that often though. Are you sure the dealer actually replaced it ?
Underdrive should fix it but if you have a large amplifer and use it a lot you could have charging issues.

Mine busted 2 of the 3 spokes................

Hot Rod mag busted all 3 on a Camaro stock balancer on the dyno at 7000rpm.

Mine was probably just a couple miles or 1 run from doing that.

I had my harmonic balancer replaced under warranty by the dealer 3 weeks ago and it has already started to wobble bad again, this time it is also causing the belt or something else? to squeel when stepping on accelerator!!! is this wobbling pulley and belt causing any other damage to my car? (alternator, water pump, power steering, crank shaft and of course the belt) 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP 100% stock.

Sounds like they did not get it on tight. Put a ratchet on it and see if it's tight. you should not be able to move it with a normal ratchet (should be torqued much higher). Mine make that noise when it was working itself off. Ended up taking out the PS pump. Check it before you use it. Then take it back to them if safe to do so.

I just replaced my crank pully with a SLP Underdrive one.. and well... here comes the wobble again! only at idle. as soon as I touch the gas pedel its dead straight.

My PB looks like it has a slight wobble at idle, but it has been on for a year with no issues.

I had the same problem. Aircon belt kept coming off, dealer kept replacing it. Eventually i had a look and noticed that the pulley had a terrible wobble. Took it to the dealer, and they agreed with me. They replaced the pulley under warranty, and it was fine after that. After fitting a cam to my car, i kept having the main pulley bolt come loose, and then the main pulley moving forward. I eventually replaced the main pulley with a Powerbond underdrive pulley, and fitted a ARP bolt to hold it. Runs truer than ever, and have not had the slightest problem from that area again.

You removed the OEM "gasket" and did not use it with the UDP, right?
If it was me, I would get ahold of a dial indicator and check the axial and radial runout of the UDP. Worst case, remove the udp, and check runout of the crank snout (just use caution not to strip the threads in the crank). If you have an alignment issue, that's how you will find it.
