All,
Got a p0449 code. Last couple of days. Now, when I reset it, it comes in immediately. IIRC, evap solenoid issue. Any advice?

DTC P0449: Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent Solenoid Control Circuit

Battery voltage is supplied to the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve. The ECM grounds the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve control circuit through an internal switch called a driver. The ECM monitors the status of the driver. A scan tool will display the commanded state of the EVAP canister vent solenoid valve as ON or OFF.

The ECM detects that the commanded state of the driver and the actual state of the control circuit do not match for a minimum of 5 seconds.

P0449
Ignition ON, engine OFF, command the EVAP vent solenoid Not Venting and Venting with a scan tool.
Listen for a click when the valve operates. Verify that both the ON and the OFF states are commanded.
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Sounds like you have a bad evap solenoid.

the commanded opening of the purge valve starts at 26% or so, until the car is warmed and at speed, then goes to 100%. If I let off of the gas, it does drive the commanded % back to 26%. Then as I depress the accelerator again, and it immediately goes back to 100%. By you explaination, when the demand goes to 100%, the ecm is not seeing 100% after 5secs (valve not going full open). Does that sound right? I will check valve operation, but will find another way, as my scantool will not command.
Thanks fo the info.

I was confused. I swapped Purge solenoids with the GTO, and the code still appears. This is a vent sol issue, not a purge sol issue. Does anyone know where it is (vent solenoid), and how to get to it?
Thanks.

Remove the fuel tank assembly. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement.

Support the evaporative (EVAP) emission canister assembly (1).
Remove the EVAP emission canister assembly to chassis retaining bolts (2).
Remove the EVAP emission canister assembly (1) from the vehicle.

So the only way to get to the solenoid is by removing the fuel tank??? Holy crap. Guess I'll try a new gas cap first...

not an option...

I just looked at en exploded view of the tank/canister, and cannot find a vent solenoid, nor an electrical connector at the canister. Am I missing something?

The warranty expired at 50K. The gas cap was a no fix. Still looking for the elusive evap vent solenoid. Anyone gotta a pic?

Part of canister (#4).

todds87ss
08-02-2010, 06:35 AM
Umm, thanks, but no. It's not actually part of the canister (unless it ships with the canister) , and it's not under the gas tank. It is visible from the right rear fender well looking in at the canister. Yes, I finally found it. Looks like lowering the X-member will be the easiest way to gain access. I'll post a pic if I can ever find a replacement. What a PITA!

Talked to dealer parts guy, who cannot find a part number - nor the part. If it has a code, you would think it had a part number...
gotta a PM to Greg@pace. HELP!

If its the vent valve your after, its part of the canister. There is a vin break. Upto 9L161209 use 92176969, after 9L161210 use 92221384. Trust me, I was a parts manager at a Caddy Dealer. Well Im still here and have access to all the goodies still.

Looked very much like this. I won't have a opportunity to remove it until this weekend.

OK, There is light at the end of the tunnel. To all that have tried to help - Caddy parts guy, Greg@Pace, and all of the GM parts guys I have talked to - (I must have been the only G8 ever with this code), I thank you. The evap Vent Solenoid is indeed a separate piece than the canister. It is not in the G8 parts bin. The GTO one (and probably others, as 2 local dealers had this in stock) fits fine.

You can see that they are identical, in physical dimension and stampings.
here is the part number off of the box. It cost me $41. I know that I could have got it for $32 but it's the only one I could find on the weekend.
http://i452.photobucket.com/albums/qq245/todds87ss/DSC_00191.jpg
I had to lower the right side of the rear cradle by loosening all 4 X-member bolts. A little prybar magic and I had enough room for my hands. I actually broke the old one apart trying to free it from it's bracket. This, however, gave me a better sightline to remove the part.
http://i452.photobucket.com/albums/qq245/todds87ss/DSC_00251.jpg
Look closely and you can see the canister further in about a foot from the vent.

I hope that this helps someone else. It was a major pain in the ass trying to find a part that no one thought existed! Sorry for the crappy dark pics, but you should get the idea.
Cheers!!

I'm getting the same code and, of course, I'm out of the warranty with 55k miles. Did you test the valve in any way? I see the "currently dead" caption in one of your photos, but didn't see any other reference. I don't really want to go to the trouble unless I can be sure this is the problem, but for 40 bucks I may take the chance.
Thanks for doing all of the leg work for the rest of us.

That caption was from a pic that I stole from the LS2 GTO guys. I tested it once I got it off. Resistance across the 2 terminals was infinate (open circuit). There really is no room to test it on car.

Well I got this code last week, and since I'm still under warranty I figured I'd have the dealership take care of it so I don't have to pay for the parts. They checked it out while I was getting my airbag recall done and I have to go back next week for them to replace the canister/vent valve. If I were doing it myself I'd probably just buy the valve you listed but since they're paying I'll let them replace everything.

Isn't the vent valve on top of the gas tank?

read the whole post. Look at the pics. The part I used is NOT either of those numbers. And it is NOT part of the tank or canister. The cheaper one was it for me.

Though I normally do my own repairs, when mine had the problem I was still covered by the warranty so I just had the dealership take care of it. The part they ordered was 92223184, which I believe is the entire canister with the vent valve assembly, and it solved the problem. My car is a 2009.5 though so it's definitely after that VIN break.

I just got this code after putting redline injector cleaner not really worried if I have to change part out but gonna wait to burn off this tank to see if it is the culprit. The light resets for a few days then comes back and at $40 not to worried. Any other suggestions since mine does reset and comes back if car has been sitting for a bit? i guess im bringing this back from the dead. I have and 09 with a build date of 4/08 go figure.

Based on post #2, it sounds like your valve is on the way out. I'd keep resetting it until it won't.

Just had the canister replaced. The part was $300 plus a $30 gas cap. Total was $750.

It's obvious that the list price they charge for parts is double what you could get them for. And I wonder if I just paid $750 for a gas cap. I'll get over that as the system wasn't resetting.

Todd, trying to update the various discussions I/we had going but can't find where some of them were. This one seems relavant since it came down to the canister (wasn't the purge valve apparently).

todds87ss

Sure. I am wondering if readiness is now good? If so, how did they get it to set? I'd go get the same code scanner you used before and see if readiness is good.

And replacing the canister also replaces the VENT valve. This valve sets a p0449. The purge valve is under the hood by the throttle body and sets a different code (p0445 I think).
Replacing the canister is a heck of a job - don't know If I'd pay 750, but it's up there.

I changed the canister and reset with scanner and I still get a check engine light for p0449 and p0445. What to do now?

you have both codes? If you changed out the vent solenoid and still get p0449, you have a wiring issue. That code sets when a signal is sent to the valve, and an open or short is detected.
Take a closer look at the connection at the valve.
The p0445 code is a lack of vacuum code. Lots of things can set it...leaks, failed open or closed vent valve, improper installation of the valve, etc...
If you have a new valve, check the wiring. Then check for leaks.

Help. Another code P0449 here. Trying to figure out the correct part.
I've read the threads which say I probably don't need a whole canister, but only the purge value.
Amazon says canister part for 2008 G8 is 92221384. Looking at the solonoid on this part, it appears to have 2 hose connections.
Based on that, I am thinking the appropriate solonoid part # would be 96553405, as the picture of this one seems to match with 2 hose connections. However, it looks like some folks have used part number 25932569 to fix an 08. Looking at the pics for this part, I can only see 1 hose connection.

So... looking for some confirmation of which solonoid to get. 2 hose connections, or 1 ?? Also wondering if the part 92221384 is a newer design than what might be on the car now, and perhaps less prone to failure. More expensive to go this route now, but if it saves me from doing the same job again in 2 or 3 years, wondering if this might be the better way to go.

Thoughts?

I was about to post a link (for shame) on the other board to this thread. Mine is an 08. There is another post with the blowup pic of what the 09 looks like. Not sure if or why it would have 2 hoses. I'll see if I can find it.

This is the second time I've had to fix this. I don't know who builds these solenoids but they should be fired. Here's the part I just used to fix my 2009.5. It's the same as what comes as a piece of 92221384 except the hose barb on the lower connection is different.

As you know stealers want between $800-1000 to do the install. My driveway mechanic did it in the driveway using a couple of jacksnin an hour and a half. A BIG PIA to do. I used that exact part, your new one. Do you top off your tank alot by any chance? I wonder what made it go bad. Though sometimes it is the front valve on the motor underbthe hood. I changed that first, afterbi changed to a new gas cap....have you tried those first before the big job on the gas tank valve?

LDM
10-02-2014, 12:17 PM
Yeah, the dealership did it for free my first time three years ago because I was still under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. They ordered 92221384, the whole canister. I wasn't gonna pay $800+ to have them fix it this time when a $12 part would do. I didn't even pay for the part because I had a gift certificate (thanks RockAuto). I usually fill up when it gets down to about half a tank. If it were the purge valve under the hood it would be a P0443 code. P0449 points to the vent valve so I went straight to that. I checked the resistance across the coil and it didn't even have continuity so it was obviously bad. The new coil was about 20 ohms.

Ahh shitt!

I was one of those who had to pay $800 because my state inspection ran out and there was no time to order parts or anything. So I can look forward to this crap again! I'll try to be prepared the next time.
