View Full Version : heat shield rattling

Has anyone ever had any problems with this. It really became noticeable today, I went to my exhaust guy and disovered I apparently had run over something that bent up the heat shield underneath the car, causing it to rattle. We bent it back and the rattle has subsided a bit, however I notice a rattle between 3000-3500 RPMs on the driver's side, got under the car and noticed the heat shield was resting against the frame. I looked at the heat shield on the passenger's side and its about 1/2-1" away from the frame. I pried the driver's side out to about the same distance. Now the sound is barely noticeable but I hear it and hate it. Would completely removing the heat shields pose much of a problem, or just cut away the part that rattles against the frame? Maybe some dynomat to go in between the heat shield and frame would work? Suggestions? Thanks.
edit: I think I'm just going to wedge some heat shield/sound deadening material in between the heat shield and the frame, thinking that'll help. Hopefully.
edit 2.0: thinking maybe even a rubberized spray would work.
Yeah when I first bought my car I took it back to the dealer because I noticed a rattling sound coming from the passenger side once I got over 40-50 mph. It turned out to be a loose heat shield flapping in the wind. They just screwed the loose part back onto the frame, with a sheet metal screw. Hasn't made a sound since.
Your rattle might be a little different though because yours seems to be brought on by vibration, while mine was due to wind speed.

Hell, I'm thinking of putting the sound deadening material in as a padding and screwing the heat shield down all along the edges. Thanks, Ralph Lauren...

Just a suggestion-
I thought mine was making a noise when I saw it hanging low on the passenger side, but it turned out to be the exhaust resting in the rear cross member. Check yours just in case.

Dynomat is ok to use since it's heat resistant, but rubberized spray isn't and it will stink like burning rubber when it gets hot from the exhaust components.

I had a noise in the passenger side dash that I could not locate. Dealer took apart the dash and wrapped everything. The noise persisted and drove me crazy (not a loud noise but something that I was all too aware of). I ended up taking the passenger side dash apart and had the wife drive the car while I sat in the passenger seat trying to locate the noise. Turns out, it was coming from underneath in the center tunnel and funneling the noise to the dash. I went under the car and noticed the heat shield was rattling against the underside of the car. I poked a hole in the heat shield and used a zip tie to secure it. This was about six months ago and the noise is gone. So much for the dealers' expertise!

Yeah, our heat shields rattle like pebbles in a can, I'm getting the ratttle from 3000-3500 rpm, definitely coming from the drivers side and a little from the driveshaft tunnel in the rear seat area. Swimman, you zip tied it to the frame, right? DRC, thanks for the heads up on the rubberized stuff.

The zip tie will eventually break, you're better off using a large sheet metal type screw.

I made the mistake of putting mine back on the car after the exhaust. Yeahhhh, that's coming off soon.
Rattles like a motherfucker.

I'm taking it to my exhaust guy on Monday, said we're going to fix it no matter what, take it off, bolt it on, whatever we have to do. He's a great guy and does damn good work. Can't wait to get this fixed, it's annoying as hell. Now I know why they call the G8 a rattle box.

Well, received an updated tune taking into account the gutted cats with straight pipe through them, seems the rattling has gone down somewhat. Still there but almost unnoticeable unless you're really listening for it, made sure it was warmed up too. Took it up and down the freeway, using the gears in the rpm ranges I was hearing it and notice a definite decrease in the amount of rattle. Could this be due to the ECM's recognition of more efficient expulsion of exhaust fumes? That gives me more hope for Monday's rattle fix.

There will be more noise from the cats now that you gutted them, they will give off a sort of tinny sound if you know what I mean.

Tinny, huh? That couldn't be it, could it?

I've had this horrible noise that sounds like a cheap jap fart can between 1600-1750rpm's. It takes a while to start. The car has to be warmed up good, and then it sounds god awefull. I've brought it to the dealer twice and they can't "reproduce cutomers stated copmplaint" because they don't drive it enough. I always thought it might be something to do with the heat sheild or something in the exhaust. I think I may try some of these tricks and see.

It could be, at certain rpm's the exhaust pulses could be producing a reverberation inside the cats.

The heat shields on the cats were separated where they had been welded around the cats, the heat shields were rattling against the cats. Removed both heat shields on the cats, rattle is completely gone I mean completely gone. Rattle free (knock on wood).
It's A G8!

My car is doing this now. I gets on my nerves! I thought about a sheet metal screw but wont it come up inside the car?

I'm not sure about putting a screw in there. I just put it on a lift and really checked everything over. You never know what could be loose or resting against something which would cause the rattle.
