View Full Version : Prototype pics of New Era OTR Intake

These are prototype pics , this will end up being powdercoated black chrome like our other intake tubes . We wanted to develop another type of induction since so many people ask about it , we wanted to give our G8 customers the option for an OTR intake as well as our original . We just finished it today , we will be doing dyno testing on this verses our original in the next few days , and we are currently looking for a stock G8 to do some more testing with it on if anyone is interested . Just thought I would give you guys some eye candy .

Looks terrific, but how in the hek do you shut the hood over it?
-Ray-
11-14-2008, 05:33 AM
You put your hands on the top edge of the hood, and pull down about halfway, then you let go. The hood will shut by itself at that point. :)

I have a dyno graph from our first test . I can't even believe it ...
This is on my car , which has our DOD cam and ARH header system etc. , this dynotesting was done with the 3200 rpm convertor UNLOCKED . This comparison graph is verses our original New Era intake which has made the same rwhp results as the Rotofab , and another Australian intake similar to ours which made the same power as well . This OTR intake made 10 more rwtq in the midrange and 5 more peak rwhp than our original New Era induction system !!!!!!!!!! Now , I don't know what the results are going to be on a stock G8 yet , but we will find out on Monday ! I don't think it will be as much because my engine demands more air due to the current mods , but we will see . Here is the dyno graph from today , I made sure the ECT , IAT , AFR and timing were the same for the comparison graph .

I just installed my New ERA CAI on Saturday. I really wanted an OTR but did not want to spend the Aussie prices. I guess now I have to wait to see what it costs and decide if I sell mine and buy the OTR or keep what I have.
Mike@NewEra
11-14-2008, 12:41 PM
This is going to cost more than our original , most likely about $100 more due to the amount of time for fabrication .

Does this type of intake have an even greater chance of sucking up water? The way the T-storms are here in Texas I wonder if would you have to worry about sucking in a bunch of rain water the first time you were caught on the freeway during a storm?

Nice looking intake. What are the Intake Air Temps (as you drive) compared to the ambient temps? The Aussie OTR's had heat issues with them mounted right on top of the radiator.

First off, nice work! I was working on something like this but I just didn't have the fabrication tools to get it done.
As stated above, I had similar concerns about the radiator transferring a good deal of heat to the intake.

You don't need a maf extension harness . Here are the dyno graphs from today , I am very pleased with the results . We dynoed it stock , then put the OTR intake on and it was an instant 16 rwhp untuned ! Then we got an additional 14 rwhp tuning after , which made it a 30 rwhp gain which I have never seen from an intake and tune in my shop on my dyno , so I am impressed . I will update this thread as soon as we get some of them finalized with a picture of the finished piece , official pricing and availability .

Thanks for the Tune today Mike...It looks like your new intake is going to be hit. Glad I was able to help out. I was amazed at how much of an increase you were able to get on my car with just the intake...not to mention the tune afterwards. Shoot me a PM or give me a call if possible as soon as you have some production intakes available. I'm sold.

My OTr.....is in and working...and my results feel like the results you posted....
But for heat reduction....I would suggest either ceramic coating (maybe black jet coating) or spraying lizzardskin on the finished pieces...especially with aluminum...
The heat slowly creeps into the metal when the radiator heats up. Now when you are moving it doesnt matter because the cold air is moving quickly through the box. The MAF heat soak is still a problem but a heat soak reduction kit would solve that problem....

Can you please explain how the HSRK is going to solve 'that problem'?
If hot air is coming in, how and where are you going to relocate the sensor? Or are you talking about relocating the sensor right behind the filter vs. using the MAF/IAT factory sensors?
Just asking here.....
I can understand with the fender kits you can relocate the sensor---but you also have alot more air tract...
Thanks,
-Mike

When the MAF heat soaks, the air coming in is cool/cold, but the sensor is hot. The HSRK removes the heat-soaked MAF from the picture. The air intake is so short, that during normal driving, the air will not heat up from the temp of the rad/intake. The air is moving too fast for the surrounding metal to heat the air up.
In stop and go traffic, the IAT's will be higher, but it won't matter. A few moments of WOT and movement of the auto will drop the temps.
Can you please explain how the HSRK is going to solve 'that problem'?

You are exactly right....the factory sensor in the MAF is the problem...the constant flow of cool air will help but it will stinn heat up and store the heat. The aftermarket unit will simple sample the air better so the car will not be fooled into thinking the air is hotter than it really is.

We are hoping to have a some of these complete and ready to ship by tomorrow , I will have pics up as soon as they come back from the powdercoater . Pricing is going to be $379 which I think is a good deal compared to the other OTR kits especially when you consider the amount of time into making one of these , and it is made in house here at New Era Performance in the US !

What does it actually take to get the MAF connection over to that point. When we were 'casually' measuring things the you had to play with the harness a bit to get it over to that point.
