There has been lots of discussions collapsing strut bushings. There is a PIC 4873, with a failure causing the bearing mount to strut to make a popping noise. Below you can see a 1800 mile or so G8 with a pop noise in the front,. You can clearly see the contact area of the washer to the inner fender. The next picture shows the stress and begining tearing between 9 and 1 o'clock
Here is a set of bushings with about 6k. The one in the center is a new Pedders. The ones on both sides were the same size at one point

Here is the bushing after removal. If you look close, between 9 and 1, you can see separation of the strut bushing between the inner and outer rubber sections.
