I started the car this morning and got a cel. When I got to work, I hooked up rev2 to read the codes. It showed a P0045 or something, small evap leak. I had to order it from GM for tomarrow.

Gas cap usually shows as "gross leak". Tightening it generally fixes.......

Happened to me 2 nights ago. Check Engine light and DIC warning came on. I had just driven the car from work, stopped to vote for about 10 minutes, and then left to head home when it came on. I was like, "what the heck is that?" Just for the heck of it, I stopped the car to check the gas cap. Sure enough, it was completely loose. Tightened it and after a few short trips the warning was gone. Whew.

Is anyone noticing any correlation with drastic swings in temperature with this happening? Happened to me on a day that it got really hot and my car was sitting directly in the sun. Prior to that it was cool and my car is always covered.

Not sure about that. First time in 14 months of all kinds of temps for my DD that this happened.

I do know that my car in general (how it runs) and/or the Cortex tune does not like the temperature swings. Runs different on different days.

This happened to me about 2 weeks after I got my car last February and the dealer got me a new cap. No problem since. I think once your cap starts coming loose the only real way to fix it is to get the new one.

I just went out and tried turning the cap. A couple turns and no clicks then it started clicking. Cap was on tight from the get go. Time for a new cap.

I need the new cap, no doubt. I get CELs at least 2 times a month. Fortunately, I have SuperChips and can cancel it. But, what a pain in the ass. To think that I spent my years at 17 and 18 working at a full service gas station and never figured out how to tighten a gas cap properly. :uhm:

I got the new cap today. I think its funny how it says make sure it clicks 3 times or you might get a cel.

Yes, it is the GM replacement. I've heard they will replace it under warranty, but I didn't want to mess with the dealer so I ordered it myself from gmpartsdirect.com. Ten bucks for the cap, fifteen for shipping and handling. Crazy. Anyway, the part number is 92232541.

You have to watch, there is a VIN break. There are 2 designs for the cap.

Mine was doing the same crap! Finally late last summer i oiled it like it was the seal on an oil filter. No problems since!

I tightened the cap on Thursday, cel went off on the way home from work and hasnt come on since. I left the cap at work, but Im still gonna replace it.

I also had the same issue, When I go to tighten the cap with the car running the CEL usually goes out a few minutes later. I have also noticed a tiny bit of rust in the fuel filler neck, Anyone else notice this?

This happened to me. Threw the code, dealer replaced cap under warranty. Hopefully it fixes it.

My service guy did not really even question my reqest to get the gas cap replaced the second time the CEL hit.. I think this is a pretty common problem with these cars. Happened to my friend as well. Neither car has thrown a CEL since the caps were replaced.

My turn to replace the gas cap too. This is the first I've gotten the cel and the car is 14 months old. I've driven the car numerous times since the cel came on yesterday, and it hasn't cleared itself yet. I even topped off the tank today, and still did not clear. Guess it's time to call the dealer for a replacement.

It took pulling teeth to get my gas cap replaced. I think they replaced it with the same kind. It's has a blue hue to the writing like my old one did, and doesn't look like the one posted in here. I've had the CEL at least 6 times, and taken it to dealership 3 times for it.

Also, the GTO had an issue with the gas cap as well. I had to buy a new one at autozone for my 04 after the stock one fell apart. I think GM ended up doing a recall or something on them. I vaguely remember a letter from them about it. Wonder if the same is going to happen with the G8? Crazy aussie gas caps!

Got mine replaced a few weeks ago by the dealer without a problem. They had them in stock.

I never replaced the cap, but I got one under warranty and its in my garage. The cel never came back on after tightening the original.

I noticed the other day that my gas tube is missing the little flap. Has anyone heard of this problem?

It doesn't have that flap. Most newer cars don't.

The check engine light came on out of the blue today. I did drive about 4 hours round trip yesterday and filled up on the way home. That may have been what started it. I've a tune to cancel out the cats, I hope this is the damn gas cap cel, if I get autozone or advance auto parts to look it up they'll be able to ascertain whether or not it is the gas cap, right? Will it mess anything up when driving and having fun?

I got a CEL again on Wendsday and new it was the cap. I replaced it on Thursday and the new cap is alot better.

I was getting a CEL for the gas cap once or twice a month. dealer replaced it with the newer version under warranty (has white text on it instead of blue) and so far no more CEL.

im pretty sure its not the cap causing my problem because as soon as i got a check engine light im having a hard time filling up the gas now it keept kicking the pump off i have to turn the nozzle upside down and pump slow. i think its something with the evap system giving me a code and making it hard for me to fill up

i get this code evry now and then,usually after the moron at the gas staion didnt tighten it,but as soon as i start up the car a second time,it goes away...then I use my aeroforce to delete the code...

What is the code? Your issue does indeed sound like the evap vent, or plugged canister. Replaceable under warranty.
Gas cap code is P0455. Evap Solenoid code is p0449.

I have had two caps and as of last month a new filler neck. Seems better, but, mine was throwing the code rather randomly. Perhaps the earlier poster was onto something in regards to big temp swings.

I keep getting CEL all the time even after i got a new gas cap. They have replaced all of the 02 sensors and a catalytic converter. The next cat goes in this week. What else could this be. its giving an o2 sensor code according to the dealer. Should i ask if its the filler tube? This is very frustrating!

no. O2 sensor code is not caused by Evap system (even gross leak would be triggered first). Post a code and perhaps I can be of more help. Autozone checks codes free.
