Step One: Locate the hood latch release lever under the dash on the left side.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130318.jpg

Step Two: Open hood and locate the Cabin Air Filter area.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130319.jpg

Step Three: Take a medium flat head screwdriver and gently pry the inserts out from the center of the plastic tabs. Caution need to be used at this point, as these little plastic pieces are slippery and tend to jump out of the hand.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130320.jpg

You will remove 6 of the plastic inserts
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130321.jpg

and then remove 6 of these large plastic tabs
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130322.jpg

Step Four: Gently lift the plastic cover up and remove the dirty Cabin Air Filter. Grab at a corner and pull gently.
After removing the old filter, it's a good idea to clean out the bottom of the tray. Leaves and other garbage gathers there.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130323.jpg

Step Five: Place your new Cabin Air Filter back in place. Make sure the filter is pointing in the proper direction when you re-install the new one, there will be air flow arrows on the bottom of the filter. The instructions show the filter being flexed buy both hands, from left to right into a soft -S- shape while lowering into position. The filter is flexible, but caution needs to be used as it will separate on you. Remove any debris that's visible. Place the bottom of the filter as far down as you can get it, and then gently slide the top of the filter into place.

Here's a picture of the new vs the old filter. It should be changed every year.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130324.jpg

Step Six: Place all of the large tabs back into place.
Tip: Align them so removing the inserts is easy next time.
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130322.jpg

Step Seven: Place all of the middle inserts back into place
http://i879.photobucket.com/albums/ab359/SRGSRG963/P3130321.jpg

Step Eight: Step back and admire your work. This filter should be changed every year.

Was that your original filter? or the second?

The black one is the OEM with 40k+ miles on it.

After replacing the filter, my car smelt like brand new again, and the AC blows cooler.

Napa / Wix Cabin Air Filter Replacement Part Number 9248.

I would suggest ordering one from Crazy Paul or Pace Performance, the Wix is cheaply made IMO.

Hood lever? Oh you mean the bonnet. Too bad it is not easier to get to, like through the glove box. My dealer does not stock jack shit. No Engine Air Filter ($49.99 for the V6), no cabin filter, no oil filter, no nothing. BTW Purelator Pure One oil filters are suppose to come with the new "O" Ring. Says so on the outside of the box, guess what?

Dealer here is selling OEM for $45.00. O'Reily and NAPA are $25.00 more (About $73.00) and are made by WIX. Guess I will stay with OEM.

SRG963 is right about those things being flimsy. I was a little rough changing one yesterday, that was a $50 mistake. Funny, the old one held up fine during the removal and reinstallation. It was the new "OEM" piece of toilet paper that came apart at one corner and on the top of the filter. I've secured two for $74.00 straight from our good friend in Australia, CP.

Shawn,

You need Charlie's heater hoses, stat!

--

And I'm gonna need to do this at some point. I'm sure the filter in my G8 is naaaasty. I've never changed it. I may just wait, though, save up lots of pennies, and see if I can't order the three-gauge setup, V6 radiator cover, AND filters all at once. Unless there's no benefit to that combination. Then I'll just do 'em whenever.

Completed this yesterday...

My advice don't attempt to pull the full cover off unless you really have to. (I broke a few clips and the cover where the clips attach in a couple places removing it) If you do I think what I did wrong is to pull up in the middle, I think if you pulled straight up starting from one of the ends you would have better luck. AND, I think trying to release these plastic clips during cold weather is probably causing me issues, I think if the plastic would be warm or hot like in Summer I would have better luck.

My .02 hopefully helps someone..

Thanks for the DIY, Shawn. Well written! I just did this tonight, and it took around 15 minutes, most of which was spent trying to get the new filter seated.

These definitely need to be regularly changed since they're exposed to the elements and will... grow things. This is what mine looked like after 2 years.

Nastiness. I was BREATHING through that. Oddly enough, I think the old filter was even installed in the wrong direction!

I looked into the direction that is should be installed and

1) It seems that the arrows on the filter should be pointed towards the front of the car not to the inside. (Airflow appears to be in that direction, despite what logic would suggest)

2) The filter does not appear to be directional so I'm not sure it even matters.

The local parts store is part of the Uni Select USA group which is a "distributor" of sorts. They buy local autopart stores and put them under one of several banners so to speak. if you go google them, there is a link to locations. The 22 buck filter I got was made by wix but again a "store brand". It was rather plain, did not feel or look as robust as the OEM, but like you said, 22 bucks, I will pay and change more often

Air comes from outside the car, thru the filter, to the inside of the car.

+1 on Paul's post.

I think the "wrong direction" here has to do with the baffles - the ridges, I guess - at the edges of the filter. They're not braced, so they're pretty flimsy. If the filter is installed the wrong way, the air flow will push the baffle aside and go around the filter on that edge. If it's oriented the right way, it'll catch in the baffle and be forced to go through the filter.

so the way that the previous filter was installed from before I got the car, the arrow was pointing to the front of the car. That seems as though that would be backwards? Shouldnt the arrow be pointing into the car?

EDIT: Now I see that some posted that it should go in the reverse way of what the logic would say...

Good advice. Also, if you have difficulty taking the retaining clips out, you can get a tool just for this purpose at AutoZone. It helps in removing them next time to put a little 3 in 1 oil in the retaining pins.

I briefly read through the thread, but haven't seen anything with my issue yet. I emailed Crazy Paul and am just waiting on a reply. I got a replacement filter and hit a big wall on installation. the part numbers are identical Holden logos included, obviously batch number different-- but there was an issue. forgive the crappy phone pics, but I've included the same pictures I emailed to CP. the ruler in front shows the difference on a flat surface. since it was impossible to indicate the units in the picture, measured they are at the center 236 mm on the old and 243 mm on the new.

suffice it to say after probably 40 minutes of fucking around with it, the old one is vacuumed and back in. no fault of CP of course-- he was awesome in getting this to me and some badges quick. this seems like a big glaring FAIL on Holden's QC to me though.

I heard back from morpheousssv who I supplied with a filter last week, he had no problem twisting the new filter & then installing it as per the fitting instructions.
You've caught me on a weekend when I have no stock of filters here to measure and check. I'm expecting about 20 in tomorrow so I'll measure all of them and let you know if I find any variation in height.
I definately haven't heard of any issue before receiving the e-mail you sent me.

I just got my replacement filter which I ordered from gmpartsdirect. I was surprised to see it came with official Holden "Fitting Instructions for VE Commodore Pollen Filter". First thing you notice is the drawing shows the filter on our driver's side instead of the passenger side. Funny Aussies. First step is to "Open the vehicle bonnet". As for the air flow arrow, Step 6 says " Twist to collapse the replacement pollen filter, ensure the arrows on the base of the filter are pointing TO the HVAC unit and positon the filter in the retaining grooves" so I'm not sure why everybody's filters were installed with the arrows pointing the other way.

It looks to me as if some cabin filters in the past have been installed with the base of the filter too far forward and blocking the drain holes.
Note in this pic the vertical sides of the filter are a small distance rearward of the stops, but the drain holes are covered by the base of the filter. I'd suggest moving the base of the filter more rearward (towards the firewall) to fully expose the drain holes & forget about how far the filter is from the forward stops.

See the "tide mark" on these filters. Could be because the drain holes in the bottom of the "filter box" were covered over.

Just got mine from O'reilly today. 10 bucks is correct.

I called today and they said no one around (including their warehouse) has them. Oh well... it was worth a shot!

Here, they said anyone that claims that they got this filter from O'Reillys is full of shit!

PCW never approved my registration. I tried 3 different email addresses, but it kept saying something about registration denied by the automatic spam filter. I tried my work email, gmail, and ymail. I emailed them to tell them I wanted to join, but got no response. Oh well.

I emailed them to tell them I wanted to join, but got no response. Oh well. That happened to me too when I tried to sign up. I tried all my different email address and none of them worked. I was getting frustrated and about to say forget it. Finally I tried signing up with "LDM G8" as my username instead of "LDM" and it worked. It says the username cannot be shorter than 3 characters, but maybe the spam filter throws up a flag as well if it's a short name. I'm guessing you tried signing up as "polo" there like you are here. If Shawn isn't able to help you get signed up, maybe try something like "polo G8".

Thanks, man! That must have been the problem, because "poloG8" worked fine. Kinda stupid though, because it should tell you when you choose a username that it's not going to work. I assumed it was the email address causing the problem, but never thought about the user name because it said polo was "valid and not in use."

Well, as long as I'm not too late, I'll join the group buy. Thanks again!

Yeah I thought the same thing. I just tried changing the username as a last ditch effort and surprisingly it worked. Glad it worked for you too.

That still remains a mystery.
I've had my hands on a couple hundred since then and what you received is the same as all the stock coming thru. I haven't heard of any other issues apart from yours.

pha|anx,

This happened to me too with the Wix and the new OEM Holden filters. They were too tall to fit.

I just put mine in from the group buy, and at first it I thought it was in fact taller as it was slightly squished when I installed it. I pulled it out to see if it wasnt sitting correctly, and confirmed the part numbers are the same.

The way it fits is with felt over the top and bottom to make a seal. IMO the old filter just had flatter felt and probably was slightly smaller from being installed in the car so long. I put the new filter back in, and again it looked slight crushed. Then I tried to slide the folds of the filter back and foward (left and right) and now it looked less crushed and seemed to fit better. I'd bet that if I opened it back up in a few weeks after the filter has been vibrating in there for many miles of driving it looks like it fits perfect just the the 2 year old one I just removed.

Just an FYI, I posted on one of the other threads - O'Reilly Auto Parts has cabin air filters by MGD - MicroGard - #3753 $9.99 ! You may have to order it, not always kept in stock. Best price I've seen anywhere, and it fit perfectly. The counter guy couldn't believe it when he looked up the WIX
filter for over $60.00! After all, it's only a cabin air filter, why the hell are they soooooooo expensive everywhere else?

Because the rest of them aren't made in China?

Sorry there G8 Ray, but I'll buy American any day over foreign, but tell me why it should cost over 6 times as much to buy a paper
filter made here? That's just plain wrong! Oh, by the way, where was your G8 made? :hmm:

Are you sure any of those paper filters were made here? The filters I shipped came to me from Australia. My hope is they were made there. They are the genuine article. BTW, my G8 looks like a Holden Special Edition.
Stanley makes hammers. Stanley has a factory in China. Stanley sells the hammers as prices that they were made in the US. Now that is bull shit.

I think you misunderstood my post.

The Holden filters are made in Germany. You can even see it on the box in CP's photo: http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/PerthPurplePenguin/car%20parts/Cabin%20Filter/PFF1010606.jpg

TRUCE!

I agree, it is bull shit.
It's just a shame the way some company's will rip people off.
Based on what I've been reading here, there seems to be a fitment problem with several of
the filter brands?
