Tough lose, but I've seen worse calls. I.E. umpires calling someone out over a tag when the player completely missed tagging their opponent by over a foot.

At least he manned up. That's more than a lot of umpires would do.

Did the missed tag affect the history of the game? This was one of the bigger flubs of the regular season to date, but it only took away an individual achievement. At least that's all it was, an individual achievement, and not a call that altered the outcome of the game. Unfortunate, but as long as the human element is present, there's going to be calls like this, and I'm fine with that.

Unbelievable. MLB needs to take a look at that and seriously consider changing that call. I know it's never been done, but they need to do what's right.

There have only been 20 "official" perfect games in basebal history. This would have been 21. Yes history was affected. And you cannot compare this to some random meaningless "missed tag" blown call.

That's exactly why they need to go ahead and announce that they're changing the call, and giving him the perfect game. Every time that kid sees that only 20 perfect games have been thrown, he's going to have to deal with that ump's major screwup.

Ya Bud Selig idiot needs to step up and give the kid a perfect game!!! Ump said he was sorry and blew the call..comminsioner needs to fix it ASAP..

Agree. I don't think it will happen though.

Not sure I agree with this. While the perfect game is an 'individual achievement', no perfect game is accomplished by an individual alone. That whole team was screwed out of the history books. One man gets his name on the list, but it took 9 guys to pull it off.

I was watching it live when it happened, and I could see he was out before they showed the replay. I don't see how the umpire could have got it wrong, the ball beat the runner to the base and the pitcher clearly got the bag with his foot. They really do need to use the instant replay in a situation like that, specially with such a great achievement on the line.

The Cardinals lost the 1985 World Series because of a similar play at first base. Jack Clark threw the ball to Todd Worrell covering first and the umpire blew the call. The Royals won the game which forced a 7th game and the Cardinals lost the series. I was watching that game and I couldn't believe it.

LOL....GM presented Galarraga with a new 2011 Corvette convertible before today's game for his performance yesterday.

I'm sure he would rather have the perfect game. He could afford the car. The car will probably be sold after a few years, but the record books are forever. It was a nice gesture though.

The a big difference between a no-no and a perfect game. I was so pissed when Joyce called him safe. Selig better reverse the call which I doubt he will. Wouldve been the first ever perfect game in Tigers history.

Pretty classy acts on all both sides of this. You do not see many professional athletes that act like an adult when close calls go the wrong way. Props to the pitcher.

Yeah, I saw the video on youtube, very professional response. One would've thought he would've stormed the ump and started yelling obscenities, but nope. Just a nod and a smile.

And also, it's definitely a team effort. The 1st out of the that inning was an insane catch by the outfielder.

Agree. Before today's game, Galarraga provided the Ump the roster for the game and Joyce was all choked up trying to hold back tears. Bad call but very well handled on both sides. Sportmanship at it's best. Too bad we don't see it much these days.

I think Selig is fail for not even considering to reverse the call. Even Joyce admitted it was a bad call. You dont see refs in the other major sports admitting they made a mistake.

I'm not surprised. Selig is one of those baseball purists. If he overturned the call, before you know it he will be asked to let Pete Rose into the HOF.

If he reverses that call, he'll have to reverse every other bad call in baseball, so there's no way that will ever happen. It's done and over with, but hopefully Selig will allow the use of instant replay in a situation like this so this doesn't happen again.

I really don't get the "purist" statements. This was the last out of the game and the call was obviously blown. Purity is like saying that the Negro leagues should still exist.

BlackGT5

The call was blown, everybody and their mother agrees even Selig. The "purist" in Selig does not want to take away from the "human element". I don't agree with Selig but that is his decision.
