I am building Homelink into my sunglass case from a garage door remote and am looking for a momentary push button that matches the interior. Does anyone know of one that is a good match? I checked Radio Shack and a few of the car parts places, but I cannot find one that looks good. THANKS!

You may want to look at different vehicles that have it and buy the switch out of it.

This one wouldn't be too bad, but it is a little shiny.

I don't have access to a bunch of different vehicles. Most buttons are molded into the interior. I'm going to add mine, but I want it to look stock... or at least not out of place.

There's a post on G6performance.com where a guy built his into the sun visor. Maybe Jnak can find it when he's done honeymooning.

I think I'm going to stick with the overhead console. Thanks.

I understand, but the process would generally be the same. BTW, I looked and searched over there, but there site is so big now, it's impossible to find anything.

I got this done a while ago and forgot to post the pictures. Unfortunately I didn't take any as I was building it, but it was pretty straight forward and how I explained it in the 1st post. It is a cheesy Homelink. (sorry about the cell phone quality pics)

I just saw this. It's probably not much use anymore but if you need it, here you go.

Here's the link. Hope I don't get banned for posting a link to another forum. :nah:

I think the trash was emptied, at least part of it.

How'd you get the overhead console down?

I think the first post in this thread has what you need.

Did you just use your garage door remote's battery? Or did you tap off power in the console? I'm thinking there has to be a hot attached to the dome light switch, so I will likely steal power from that.

I tried to tap into a power source in the console. My garage door opener uses a 3 volt battery, so anything greater will destroy the circuitry. I built a small circuit board that converts 12v down to 3v. This worked very well until I tried hooking it to the power from the dome light. That voltage was not consistent, which led me to believe it is not just an accessory type hook up. It appears that the wires are functioning differently than just a constant power source. I used my circuit board and plugged in into the wall using a DC convertor and it worked perfectly, I hooked it to the car battery and it worked as well, but connecting it to the dome light wire (which I assumed was power) was very inconsistent. I ended up removing my circuit board and just went with the garage door opener’s battery. (I did buy a brand new battery so I would have to replace it quite so soon.)

Good Luck!

FWIW, I've added a couple of pictures below.

Ok well there is not enough room in the overhead console to mount the homelink controller, so I instead mounted it on the under dash panel by the headlight controls. pics to come over the next day or so. Still need to get a power wire run to it but I'm tired :)

There is not enough room in the upper console, but there is plenty of room just behind it, since I do not have a sunroof. I ordered the same rolling code three button transmitter from ebay. I am searching for the elusive power source. There are two 12 volt sources on the 4 prong plug in the console, but I need to make sure it works, before I cut the holes. There is about 2" of room between the headliner and the roof, more than enough for this 3/4" thick transmitter.

I can not drill the three holes in the headliner with a drill bit, because it would not work well on headliner fabric. I found some 1/2" copper tubing in my garage and cut off a 6" piece. I chamfered the inside with a pocket knife to give the end of the tubing a knife edge on the outside edge. Tests with a piece of corrugated cardboard produced excellent clean cut holes. A piece of blue painters tape allowed me to mark the position of the holes.

As soon as I can verify the power in the console, I will cut the holes. and mount it. There is lots of room up there for other projects.

Pictures when I am done....

Does anyone know if the transmitter requires switched power? ie when the key is on? I guess I can measure the idle current draw and see if it will be a problem.

Does not required switched power since it's only drawing power when a button is pressed.

IXLR8 - Any updates? Just wondering how the project went and if you have any pictures of the finished product.

Hi,

I want to do a similar mod as well. Did we ever find an unswitched 12V?
