View Full Version : Has anyone used the PF52 instead of PF48 filter?

I was absolutely shocked to find that my LS3 uses the same PF48 factory filter as the 3.1 V-6 in my Sunbird, and the SC3800 in my GTP. In both of those cars, I subsitute the PF52 filter which has the same threads and diameter, just a longer body for more filtration area. Has anyone tried the PF52 on a G8? I had already purchased a PF48 equivalent, so I used it this time. I am debating on switching to the PF52 next oil change though. The only downside I see would be the filter may be just a tad bit lower than the oil pan (yes I know that is a risky downside). Interested in people's thoughts.

Personally, I would not do it, only because the filter bottom would be exposed to road debris / rocks, etc. Engines don't run dry very well at all.

Aside from being lower, I don't believe the PF52 has a relief valve whereas the PF48 does.

Useful info guys, thanks. I never really looked on a PF48 to find a relief valve. Now I am going to have to get one and compare it to the PF52. Next time I change oil, I may "dry-fit" a PF52, just to see if it dips below the pan. If it does (likely), risk from debris is too great. I don't want to have to buy a replacement LS3!

You have this all wrong ! The PF-52 has the same threads as the PF-47 (18 x 1.5mm). It is NOT the same as the threads in the PF-48 (22 x 1.5mm). Sorry.

Oops, my bad! I guess it is a moot point now anyway, since the dangers of the longer filter likely outway the benefits. Thank you very much for the clarification on this!
So is there a longer filter with a relief valve that has the same threads as the PF48?

The size of the PF48 gives it sufficient filtering capacity for our motor, there's no need to use a larger filter. If you want more filtering buy a better filter. I use the NAPA gold filter and it's much better than the stock filter, plus it's only $6.

I use the UPF-48R.
