View Full Version : Evaporation Code; Gas cap repeatedly loosening?

First off, I am not an idiot- I know how to tighten a gas cap. That being said, every other tank or so I go through I get that evaporation code, and go back to my gascap and find it to be no longer tightened. When I tighten it of course 1 minute later the check engine light turns off. After the first time this happened I made it a point to take doublecheck my tightening after a refill. This has happened about 4-5 times since I got the car in February with 4k miles on it. Is there such a thing as a defective gascap? Our gaslid locks so I find it unlikely to be someone elses doing.

Wicked, is there a specific TSB for this? I told my dealer about it and they gave me resistance, saying they couldn't do anything unless they saw the CEL themselves...

I'll look up the part number when I get to work... No bulletin other than the one which says to make sure you are not putting it on wrong.

The new cap has different white writing on it and must be slightly different internally. I have put many on, not one has had the light since. (including my own)

I had the same problem. The cap they put on is p/n 92232541. Works perfectly like a gas cap should.

The old cap was made by British Petroleum. :notworking: I had same problem, WickedMom is correct about the old cap and in some cases quite literally falling apart.

Whats up with BP with their leaking problems?

Yeah I had this problem and the dealer corrected it with an updated gas cap.
I think Hulkss is correct with the PT#.

They are available from any dealership. They are about 15 dollars if your car is out of the 36.000 mile warranty, otherwise it should be free

Jess, make sure you got one in stock for me. I'll need one on my next visit (which should be real soon). Oh...and Tami will thank you too....since I keep yelling at her to stop leaving the gas cap loose.

I stock it, Don... No worries there. We stock the gxp diffuser as well now too...

Hey, you guys coming out for memorial day drags? Less than 100 cars registered for the whole day so far.

Still undecided. Possibly have other things planned but those may fall thru so it's 50/50 right now.
