View Full Version : Dead LED in Tail Lights (High mount stop light ?)

I couldn't find any information on this, so I gotta ask...

The LED in question here, is a single LED that lights up on the side of the tail lamp, not the rear. My problem is, I noticed that my driver side tail lamp, this particular LED was not lit. Is there any common ground (not referencing electrical ground here) that would cause this to go dead in 1-1/2 years? Also, what is all entailed in replacing this LED?

Here's the LED in question. This is obviously the working one, on the passenger side:

High mount stop light is mounted high in the middle of the car.

lol... makes sense. 3rd brake light. Win! Thanks for the correction. I am unaware of that being LED (I've never seen it lit up in person), but everything that I find references LED for the "high mount stop light." What's this little LED that's on the side of the tail light called?

I believe it's the parking light bulb that you want, 3rd one down.

I will have to look, but I could swear that looked like an LED 'cause it was extremely tiny, like an LED. I'll go see if I can't snap a good close-up pic quick. I don't know if my camera will focus well in the dim light of my garage.

the 2825LL is pretty small.

Says it's the same type of bulb for the license plate light.

Sorry, had a typo in my URL's, and that's fixed.

Yep, that's it for sure. The bulb that Geoff is referencing is way too big. Any idea on a part number or are there instructions on how to replace the LED?

LOL... I honestly thought I put this in the G8 GT forum, not the L76 forum. OOPS!

There's no part number or repair instructions in anything I've looked at. Barely any info at all.
There's a pic of the electrical connector for the rear side marker.
A mention somewhere else that the rear side marker LED is part of the tail light assembly.

You can't see the wires for the LED side marker in this picture, but they are permanently attached to the square connector that plugs into the vehicle harness in the trunk. I remember seeing the wires when I swapped my tails for tinted ones, and thought to myself, what the heck is that for? From what I recall the tail light would have to be disassembled to get at the LED to replace it, so it won't be an easy task.

Geoff, yea, that looks like it! Got a part number on that one?

I sure hope it isn't a difficult task! I will try to pull out the light sometime this week, if I have time, and see what is there. I am guessing pulling out the tails is pretty painless. If this is a difficult task, I guess I could leave it up to my dealer to fix. I don't know if something like this would be under warranty, though I've never seen an LED die this quick.

It's easy to remove the tail light, just remove the plastic wing nuts that hold the trunk liner in place and carefully pull it out of the way. Then remove 3 steel nuts on the tail light with a 10mm wrench, unplug the wiring harness and pull the tail light out.

Yup I just looked at a V6 tail that I have shipping out for a customer. The LED is not replaceable since it is molded into the lamp. You won't be able to put a new one in unless you take the lens off the housing. Sorry.

Covered under warranty? If it's not replaceable then you'd need a new taillight. Dealer visit?
