Don't really post videos and stuff here, but I thought this was pretty amazing...

Just an amazing video of what dogs are truly able of doing....

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=f40_1272088397

Meanwhile, the family cat was licking its own acewhole on the bed.

:p

What's funny about this video is Sig, my youngest GSD does the same "look back" to make sure you are coming if he is walking around with you. He is so funny.

Feel free to use this thread to post up your doggies!

Sig, my youngest, followed by Kai, my former service dog.

I saw that on ABC News last night. Pretty incredible. I have a wolf/shepard mix and he is one of the best dogs I've ever had. Nice pics of yours btw.

That is pretty awesome. Given that the dog is untrained and did that on his own means he has a natural protective instinct. As opposed to cats which are naturally self protective. I don't know if it is part of their training but you gotta hand it to the officer for following the dog.

Your oldest looks EXACTLY like one of the 4 GSD's my parents had. Loved those dogs and plan to have one of my own here in the near future!

this is our shepard/husky? mix. he is a great dog but a little too smart. i have never had a dog so hard to contain.

he will open windows, open doors, jump out of 2nd story windows, he can escape from a kennel in less than an hour and the kennel is destroyed when he is done. he has gone thru 3 of the brute dog cables in less than 2 years. he loves to kill old socks and throwing them at you.

Shepherd/Husky??? That's some canine intelligence created in a secret government lab. How did you train him?

@GXPPilot... love that picture of the two together. I'd bet a burglar would wish he was wearing Depends if he hopped the fence and saw that. You either wouldn't need to lead the guy from him being frozen stiff or he'd outrun the bullet.

That is am awsome story and feat that GSD did. My GSD does the same look back or comes back and checks on us and the bulldog. He is so smart. I have had GSD growing up an by far the smartest dogs i have ever seen. They are natrual born leaders and learn very fast. I used to have a male and female that could do all kinds of crazy stuff. Open doors, the fence, keep kids in yard, never had to walk on a leash. They was trained to walk beside you at all times. But had to get rid them about 8 yrs ago. Now I have another one and he is just as smart. My poor bulldog i think is even amazed by how smart the GSD is. This is GSD is only 9 months full german blood lines. Olde English Bulldog is 2.5 yrs old.

This is my yellow lab, Aspen. He is almost 2 years old and is a certified master hunter. He loves fetching ducks, doves and geese for me.

German Shepards ARE naturally protective, we have a White Shepard and she is that way without training. In fact sometimes it scares me that she might go off on someone entering our house that she doesn't know, even though they are a friend of ours. She is also very smart and loves to play with my kids, yet she has never hurt them. Here's some pictures of her.

He's a big baby. But doesn't warm up to people real fast. He stays at a distance till he gets to know who ever the new person is. He took it upon himself to become the granddaughters silent, dutiful guardian.

German Shepherds are amazing dogs. My dad raised my family on them. I don't currently have one of my own, but a German Shep or some variant thereof - beautiful animal, ManofSteel69! - would be the automatic choice.
My parents' current dog, Blue, a sable-coated male German Shepherd:
http://www.eidolways.com/images/Blue.jpg
He has the most amazing temperament. Utterly unflappable, playful as a puppy at times, and yet when he's calm, you can hold his head in your hands and rub his cheeks and he'll just look right back at you. So I agree wholeheartedly: great dogs.

EDIT: On the subject of protectiveness, one of my family's past GSD's, a female, once charged me when I entered the back yard at night-time and started walking toward my dad. She recognized me in time, thankfully, but not before she tumbled bodily into my legs. :P So yes, very protective animals.

How bad do German Shepherds shed?

whiterp199

My white one sheds non stop. I guess my black one is not as bad and you cannot see black fur very well. The White stands out on anything.

My parents only let the dog in to the house to lie on a rug by the back door, and he's kept in overnight, but he still sheds badly enough come spring to leave clumps of hair in the corners of the kitchen!

Lobo sheds the worst spring and fall. Do to the wolf in him he has a mean undercoat, that makes it look like it snowed when he is brushed. I can also predict how bad of a winter it will be by when it comes in, and when we have turned the final corner for spring.

Nice! I was always curious as to what happens when your partner is no longer able to serve. Do you get first option to adopt him? What a great way to spend your work day ;)

I couldn't resist.

This is Wolf, my first GSW. I named him after a character in the Steven King novel "The Talisman".

He was 38% Timberwolf. This breed were called TimberShepherds, there was a breeder in South Carolina I got him from. He was my first dog and I picked him up the same month I bought my first house.

Very friendly and strong dog. No human could beat him at a game of tug o' war with his rope toy. I would win money on this. After 10-15 minutes even the biggest guys arm would start to cramp and they would give up.

He lived 16 years and is now buried in my front yard. This was 5 years ago and it is still rough to look at these pictures.

Him and our Boxer, Lexie.

Here is our new girl, Heidi. I found her walking the streets about 6 weeks ago. She was malnourished, beat up, and had a terrible skin infection. She now weighs 15 lbs more and is growing some of her fur back.

The Vets think she was on her own for quite a while. When I first brough her home she didn't even know how to climb stairs. She is a great dog and is great with the kids.

I still can't get her to look at me with her ears up.

Our policy gives me the 1st option to buy him for $1(to release them from any liability). Most policies are written that way. It's pretty rare that a handler doesn't keep their partner.
